Zadies Kosher Bake Shop

Their bread, cakes, pastries are all you’d want them to be. Delicious, fresh and a good variety. The store is plain but it’s not a place where you sit and eat, it’s pickup only. I only cringe and hesitate to visit the store because some of the staff are so nasty that it gives the store such a bad atmosphere. Thankfully, their food is not affected. I only visit when I feel brave enough to go in there and let it all bounce off of me. They are quick though, so the long line goes fast. And there are a couple of people who work there (an older lady who even threw in free challah rolls and a younger one that’s pleasant) that are kind and nice, but the others make you want to run out of there as fast as you can. I’ve experienced one man who works there make fun of me (in a harsh way) to the others when I was feet away from him, but I said nothing and looked away because it’s hard to find a good bakery and theirs is great. So the abuse is what affected my rating, but the pastries are 5 star.

MOIST moist moist moist pastries with plenty of filling.
Love their long hours.
My favorite items are the homemade strudels (especially poppyseed or apricot),
the cinnamon danish and various fruity danish.
I do miss the nuts, now that they’re nut-​free.
Why Bergen County needs more than one nut-​free kosher bakery, I’ll never understand.

This is a real deal old school bakery. I enjoyed their pastries and bread and liked that they offered samples on their counter.

— Chocolate Kokash/​Babka — twisted layered sweet bread filled with chocolate and topped with chocolate, powdered sugar crumbles
— Strudel — I am normally not a strudel fan as I don’t like fruit filled pastries as it gets too sweet, but I will gladly eat the strudel for the flaky delicate layers. Wondering if they have a cheese strudel with the cheese Danish fillings…
— Mandel Bread or Mandelbrot — ask them to cut it up but this is like a biscotti but cakier. ($ 7.95)
— Sweet onion roll if you want something on the savory side ($ 0.80)
Will be back to try more stuff. Need to get there earlier for the raisin bread challah…

Challah pretty amazing. Mandelbrot excellent. But the attitudes! I find it difficult to continue patronizing this bakery because of the young sales clerks. They are so interested in the sports on TV that all politeness and manners have been forgotten. If someone yells «next» when there are only 3 customers in the store, does not return a greeting, and proceeds to slowly gather my order while continuing to watch the TV AND BS with the other 2 young men-​well, that would explain why my order had a mistake. Zaides! Are you listening? Please retrain your staff in customer service! One of these young men is baker’s family too! I never had a problem for all the years the kindly older couple waited on me. I stop by here twice a month for a «challah» fix and baked goods for the family. Will that change? I give Zaides one more try. Just like your sports TV-​strike three, you’re out!

I’ve only tried old-​school baked good here – mandelbradt, rugelach, challah, and challah rolls both plain and onion.
Mandelbradt is a kind of twice-​baked sweet loaf, cut into pieces similar in size and appearance to biscotti, but less hard, more cakey. Zadie’s offers a traditional version, and one chocolate coated. The traditional is so good you don’t need to coating. Slices of mandelbradt are great as cookies, as accompaniments to tea/​coffee, etc. They’re never too dry, nicely balancing biscotti’s crunch and cake’s… cakeness.
The challah is challah (so: awesome) but they do make a whole wheat variety that’s decently tasty and fluffy. The rugelach are delicious.
I’ve not tried regular American baked good here – cookies, cupcakes, the like. They might be great but I’d almost always opt for a slice or six of mandelbradt over a cupcake.
The shop itself is a small plain bakery, a place to come in, pick up, and go. Long glass counter, big shelves behind the counter, etc. The owner himself is pretty interesting – he apparently speaks many languages, is a refugee several times over, and at some point in between wars and continents learned how to bake.

Place is nut free now, doesn’t have as many dairy things.
Best thing still are the chocolate pastries, though more specifically the chocolate melt away and kokosh. The fruit pies are alright and the fruit strudel is excellent. Pretty good chocolate cheese danish/​chocolate danish as well.
In short, stick with the well more traditional treats, not cupcakes or the similar.
The lace cookies are amazing also. Hamantashen are good as well when they are in season.
Huge fan of the sweet onion pockets for sandwiches as well as the pull apart challah.

Best Kosher bake shop. First of all– I don’t have allergies but I have friends who have children who do. It’s so nice to be able to know I can something delicious that is nut and dairy free. I think they sometimes have a few dairy items but they are 100% nut free. I’ve never had something from there that I didn’t like. I even packed up some mini bell cakes and sent them to a friend in Florida to cheer her up. She said the bell cakes got a little smashed but they were so good she licked the whole inside of the packaging. My family is obsessed with the chocolate kokash and the meltaway. The challah is the best around and I’ve definitely eaten almost a pound of the jelly filled cookies with the chocolate and sprinkles on the ends by myself. They don’t move with any sense of urgency, at any time, even with a line out the door and down the walk, but the baked goods are worth the wait.

Ever walk in some place and have a deja vue moment? This place is it. The challah which is amazing, tastes like the ones you had 30 years ago when real bakeries were on every corner and ingredients weren’t cut out or created in a lab. Want something decadent? For you chocoholics try their Chocolate Melt Away guaranteed to make you swoon. Bobkas, cookies, pies, and their breads! Try the sweet onion rolls it’ll put you in carb heaven.
A family run business, Zaydes is a neighborhood institution. So grab a scone and some coffee at this wonderful bake shop and enjoy!

As kosher — Jewish style bakeries go, doesn’t get much better than Zadies. Apple strudel and babka to make your momma remember her Bubie. Mine did. Perfect balance of sweet, chewy crusty challah. The real deal rye bread too. Did I forget, nice people behind counter.

I wanted to love this place so much! It reminded me of the old school bakeries I love.
I ordered cupcakes for my daughters birthday. They were very very very dry and fell apart after the first bite, I hoped the flavor would compensate for that but it was just ok… Nothing special.

The best of sweets and breads at reasonable prices. Especially tasty are their rye breads, challahs, mondel breads, Danishes, cakes, black and white cookies, and just about everything. Enjoy the calories!

While there is no question that the bakery products are exceptional (although I do think they slipped slightly in the past couple years) and the Challahs for the High Holidays are very good (especially the Whole Wheat — and I don’t even like to say «whole wheat») lately it has become significantly obvious with time and observance, that the younger generation here is clearly not as respectful, kind, talkative, or helpful if you are not from Fair Lawn’s «frum» crowd.
I have seen this to be so on several occasions and I state it with certainty.

I came to in to inquire if there were cookies or some product without nuts or eggs, since I was going to a house where there is a 8 year old who is allergic. I was told that I should look for the cookies with the «lines» in them. That’s how they know. Do I have to order them or can I pay for them now to assure they will be here on Sunday?
«Don’t worry» I was told — that should have been the first clue.
When I returned Sunday, no they didn’t have them, and when I asked, I was blown off, discounted and dismissed after the same man spent 5 minutes «shmoozing» with everyone — all wearing kipot.
When I explained that I had been there Thursday and had a conversation with someone and was assured they would be there, the attitude was a loud and clear = yea so, and who cares.
Sure be on FOX morning news show each year for one holiday or another, but then let the real you come out, your behavior and interaction really tells who you really are to everyone.
Every Customer deserves to be treated with the same level of respect.
This is an accurate review — I have given credit for good bakery products, but as we all know, you can’t fake who you are with an attitude such as I got — and, you can’t fake «class», or lack of it

Best Bakery I have ever been to, kosher or not. It’s not a bakery, it’s Zadies. The Kleenex of bakeries.

Excellent service — even during the busy holiday. We ordered 40 sufganiyot and they were kind enough to specially wrap them to keep the order fresh. We also got a complimentary sufganiyah to taste while we were waiting.

What a pleasure to find a kosher bakery in NJ that doesn’t overcharge for its products, employs staff members without major attitude, AND has amazing baked goods. As soon as I walked in the smell and display was overwhelming (in a good way!). The young woman behind the counter immediately offered my son a free cookie to enjoy while I made my purchase, and when I asked for a happy birthday inscription on the cake I picked out, it was done right away, beautifully, and more deluxe then what I asked for.
This bakery is wonderful and a name brand for a reason.

I must be high. I haven’t ingested anything, or breathed in anything that would cause that effect. Odd. But I swear I just went to a kosher, nut-​free bakery that was inexpensive AND had yummy treats AND had good service with nice people. Wow. Impressive.

We have been buying Zadies bread from the supermarket for a while until we stopped into the Zadies bakery in Fair Lawn. The pastries are some of the best in NJ. Egg challah is amazing.
Make sure you go early if you plan to buy anything on the holidays. The lines are long. But worth it

Where else can you get a fresh baked cake for $ 10 ???
This place is amazing with always fresh baked goods. The best cheese danish I’ve ever eaten.
They also have incredible scones and breads which they will slice for you. The service is extremely helpful, they will even take the time to write on your cake for you.
Very busy Friday mornings/​Afternoons.

Very Good or Should I Say Sweet?
The goodies here are fresh and delicious, they always hand you something to try as you are ordering, I like that old fashion kind of customer service. The breads are excellent and loves come in different sizes, the rye is hands down the best you will find around here!
Rugelach in many varieties can be found and just perfect. Light, crisp filled with fine ingredients and a favorite of mine despite not having much of a sweet tooth.
Did I mention the rye bread is GREAT!
