Description

Specialties

The veterinarians at our practice have extensive experience in canine and feline dental surgeries including basic prophylatic cleanings and even root canals. We also use a carbon dioxide laser for many surgerical procedures including spays and neuters, growth removals, and declaws. The benefits of laser surgery include less bleeding during the procedure, and reduced pain and swelling post-operatively.

History

Established in 1952.

Blue Cross Animal Hospital was built in 1952 when no other animal hospitals were available to the public in Annandale, Merrifield or Springfield. The term «Blue Cross» was chosen by the original owner because the «Blue Cross» to animals is the equivalent to the «Red Cross» in humans. Blue Cross Animal Hospital was the first practice in Northern Virginia to use gas anesthesia in the early 1960s and the first to use a carbon dioxide laser in 1998. We have been AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accredited since 1959, meaning we are evaluated regularly to ensure the highest standards of patient care and services. We participate in the Fairfax County Animal Shelter adoption program and the Animal Welfare League of Arlington Spay/Neuter Adoption program. We also participate with GRREAT’s (Golden Retriever Rescue Education and Training) adoption program. We are proud to have been a sponsor for several years of the Pets on Wheels annual Paws for a Cause walk.
