Cupcakes Actually

So not worth the price. I got two cupcakes and they were both dense and dry. Super disappointed.

When I lived in fairfax, my apartment was a mere 10 minutes away from this place which was deadly for me seeing as I would come almost once a week (ohh I know, the shame!). But I LOVE cupcakes and ya know. YOLO lol This is the only spot I’ve found in Fairfax with fresh bakery quality cupcakes besides Whole Foods! The staff has always been kind, attentive and friendly. Oh, and FYI. this place was featured on the Good Eats television show on Food Network ;) Not only can you get cupcakes but they also have cakes pops, mini cupcakes, vegan friendly cupcakes, gelato and even milk shots! How cute!!! They are also dog friendly and have little treats for your pups as well. My favorite cupcake by far is the chocolate dipped peanut butter! One bite and you’re floating on cloud nine! This cupcake is chocolate filled with delicious chocolate ganache and is topped with smooth peanut butter frosting. It’s then «dipped» in chocolate and topped with little candied peanuts of some sort. I’m getting hungry just reminiscing about it haha I’ve also tried the vanilla sprinkled, vegetarian chocolate/​vanilla, and red velvet which are also pretty yummy! Give it a try, you’ll def be back for more!

I used to work across the street, and would stop in for a sweet treat. Flourless chocolate was always a favorite, it’s super fudgy and decadent. Carrot cake is also great, the cream cheese frosting isn’t too sweet. The shop is always cool and offers water outside for the dogs during the summer. Nice and friendly staff too!

Great cupcakes… expensive though. I especially like the flourless chocolate, it’s like eating a brownie with icing. I realize they are surrounded by numerous venues where you can purchase beverages; but, it would just be nice to get everything at one location.
I’ve been here a couple times and the staff has been very helpful; however, I was a little disappointed on my last visit… customer service was lacking!

If there is an award a for «the best ever» cupcakes, Cupcakes Actually would win without a doubt! Wonderful and luscious flavors! AND the kindest and most helpful staff!
Had the Mexican Chocolate to commemorate «Cinco de Mayo» last week– the most unusual and delicious flavor! Can’t wait to try some other flavors.

I feel that quality has greatly decreased over the years. They are now solidly underwhelming. The cupcakes have a poor frosting to cake ratio. The vanilla cake has been bad. It’s been tasteless and dense. I’m so disappointed to see the quality go down. Not worth the money even with a groupon.

Best cupcakes in Fairfax and possibly in the DC area… but I can only say I’ve tried all cupcake places in Fairfax. When I want dessert it is always a battle to choose between here and the pink berry next door. My recommendation for my favorite cupcake is the flourless chocolate. The mini cupcakes are also great if you want to try multiple cupcake flavors! Highly recommend this place!

My husband and I drive from Gaithersburg to get these cupcakes. We usually go to their Leesburg location but will also go to this location when we need more! These cupcakes are great, we drive by Lilly Magilly’s, and Georgetown Cupcakes to get here. There is a reason they were featured on Unique Sweets there freaking amazing! I always get the flourless chocolate and Hubby swears by the Dipped Peanut butter, he is also a major fan of the OMG banana cupcake. If you haven’t tried them yet I only ask one thing, What are you waiting for???

I came here yesterday to pick up a dozen cupcakes for my daughter’s birthday. I’m very particular about red velvet cakes/​cupcakes. The cream cheese frosting needs to have the right combination of tartness and sweetness. I’m happy to report that Cupcake Actually’s cream cheese frosting was on point. It was fluffy, tart and slightly sweet! The cake was a little bit dry for my liking, but overall because the frosting redeemed it.
The reason for the 3 stars is because there was a short hair baked into my daughter’s cupcake, which, while it can happen anywhere, is an overall bummer when you’re eating your birthday cupcake.

I tried this 3 years ago and since then I stopped going to Georgetown cupcakes. Nuff said.
Get the peanut butter dipped!!!

I try to sample all of the areas cupcakes so I stopped in to purchase four of them. The girl at the front was very sweet and friendly. There was another lady, a little older, who boxed my cupcakes. She was helpful but seemed like she hated being there. I first picked out four but then couldn’t resist the pretty cupcakes and asked her to add two more. The older woman then told me it was buy 5 get 1 free. Oh! If I had known that, I would have initially gotten 6 instead of throwing the extra two in on a whim. They should have a sign or something. I don’t know the exact names but I got the red velvet, banana, Italian stallion, dipped peanut butter, chocolate covered strawberry, and chocolate fudge.
Red velvet was very good. I attempted to eat a quarter of each but i cant lie, i ate that whole cupcake! The cake was so-​so but that cream cheese frosting… I could eat a bucket of it! So velvety and just the right amount of sweetness. Plus I love that they use vanilla beans!
Banana was also good. I was super excited because a banana cupcake is my weakness. I was a little disappointed just because the cake was soft but a little dry at the same time. Weird… But it had the cc frosting! With a hint of banana flavor. Still, I much prefer the CakeLove banana cupcakes. Those things are crack in cupcake form!
Italian stallion… I had a bite and it was very good. But not very memorable as I can’t remember anything specific about it, haha.
Peanut butter I did not try because I’m allergic (it’s for my brother). But it looked good!
Choc covered strawberry was underwhelming. The strawberry flavor was minimal. The buttercream frosting was not my cup of tea.
Finally, chocolate fudge. I was expecting some type of lava fudge in there but I guess that’s just me. There was none. The frosting was terrible on this. Not even close to sweet enough and I don’t even like things too sweet. But this was legit butter with a little bit of sweetness. It looked pretty though. It was like the Channing Tatum of cupcakes. Beautiful but not good at its job (acting for Mr. Tatum, being yummy for this cupcake).
Three stars is about right for this place. Not to mention its pretty pricey even for a cupcake place. If not buying 6 to get the free one, these are not worth the moolah!

While I have not set foot in the physical store location, I can attest that these cupcakes are quite delightful to eat. My boss frequently orders mini cupcakes from here for birthdays, or just to have as treats around the office. My favorite is-​surprisingly-​the flourless chocolate with buttercream vanilla frosting and chocolate curls. I frequently eat only the icing from cupcakes as I find the actual cake too dry, however, that is not a problem I have with these cupcakes! The cake is very rich and the icing is so light. The dipped peanut butter (chocolate cake and peanut butter buttercream frosting topped with peanuts) is another favorite. Right now, they have a seasonal pumpkin harvest cupcake that is quite tasty as well. The mini cupcake is the perfect size because then you can sample several with less guilt!

They have vegan cupcakes albeit not many but at least they have the option. They’re cute little petite cupcakes which helps me lie to myself that is not that bad for my diet. Flavor wise they’re not the best in the world but if I’m ever back in the area I would go back.

This place is one of the closest cupcakes stores near my house. It’s quite good. Nice area. Friendly staff. Clean. Provide ice cream samples.
I got the toasted coconut ice cream. My friend got the hazelnut Brownie ice cream sandwich and we shared a tiramisu cupcake.
The toasted coconut is more creamy than coconuty. Not what I expected after eating more of it. The sammich was more on the dough. Although I just added more ice cream on it with my toasted coconut. The tiramisu cupcake was the best out of the three. Tiramisu flavoured cream and dough tasted like Graham crackers.

I’ve been meaning to check out Cupcakes Actually for quite some time now. Owned by Sue, this cupcakery also offers custom creations, wedding cakes, gelato, a selection of coffee beverages, and even treats for pups! I tried 6: the Flourless Chocolate (GF chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream and chocolate curls; tasted a bit too dark chocolatey for me, but the hubs enjoyed it); a Simply Red (red velvet cake with vanilla cream cheese buttercream and a red chocolate heart — this red velvet is definitely one of the best I’ve had! Very moist and not overly sweet!); Dipped Peanut Butter (chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream, dipped in ganache, and topped with a peanut topping; PB lovers will enjoy this, with its thin crisp chocolate exterior and a lovely peanut butter cream inside); a Golden Nugget (carrot cake with zucchini, pineapple, and raisins with cream cheese buttercream, topped with gold sugar crystals; this was definitely more like a zucchini bread in a cupcake form); the Peachy Keen Cobbler (peach cake infused with a cobbler filling, topped with a vanilla cinnamon buttercream and topped with an oatmeal crumble; this was another one of my favorites, as the peach cake and the filling was so yummy!); and, the Tiramisu. The ‘frosting’ reminded me of my favorite cupcakery out in Leesburg (Sweetz), where it was light and airy, buttercream-​based, and not overly sweet. The cake themselves were very moist, which I appreciated! I can’t wait to come back and try out their other flavors, like the Blueberry Lemon, Creamsicle, Going Bananas, Mango Margarita, Pumpkin Harvest, Peppermint Patty, Lemon Basil, Banana Split, and the PB & J (topped with a grape gummy bear!)! If you purchase a cupcake, you can get a scoop of their gelato for $ 1.50 — I tried their Salted Caramel, and it was just okay. There is free parking, but just note that this plaza is usually jam-​packed!

Not sure why the overall Unilocal ratings are so low, I absolutely love these cupcakes! I’ve been a happy customer since they opened up in Fairfax Corner. With such a large variety of delicious flavors, I can always count on Cupcakes Actually to fulfill my cupcake cravings. There isn’t a flavor that I’ve tried that I haven’t liked; they have cute seasonal flavors and designs as well. Red velvet is one of my favorites and a flavor I have to get every time I stop by. They also sell coffee/​lattes that come in cup sleeves that say «cupcake snob»…how cute is that?! Highly recommended :)

Walking into Cupcakes Actually, I am automatically impressed. Its a small shop, but very quaint and cozy. There’s a display case with all these delicate cupcakes with the display note cards so you know what’s what.
I went with the Vanilla Bean and Peach Cobbler, $ 3.50 a piece. They use a whipped icing so its airy and light. Personally, I prefer a slightly heavier icing. The cake part is perfect, not airy and falling apart. The vanilla bean had colorful sprinkles on top, that was fun. The peach cobbler had a fruit filling in the middle. I was not expecting that, so that was an unexpected surprise.
Delicious. Polite. I’ll return.

Got to try four of these cute little things since I received them for a present. The red velvet was amazing! Butter cream frosting also very good.
One of them had a unique sort of frosting: there was hardened chocolate coating the cream frosting… caught me by surprise when I cut the cake in half. in a good way! And walnuts as toppings. yum!
I don’t particularly have much of a sweet tooth, so sadly, some of the frosting did go to waste. The actual cake part was very good and fluffy. I wish I knew what all the flavors were of the ones I tried!
I kept two cupcakes in the fridge after taking them home. I think they are better at room temperature.
I heard they are $ 3.50 each, a little pricy IMO, not good enough for me to go out of my way for them. Great as gifts though!

What a sweet treat!
I didn’t personally visit the store but a friend surprised me with some delicious cupcakes from here for my birthday. I love the decorations on each cupcake. So creative. The buttercream is smooth, light, and not overly sweet. Love it! The cake itself was flavorful but not all that fluffy within. A bit on the heavier side. They even sell treats for your dog or cat. The cutest little cupcake was wrapped up for my yorkie Cho Cho. Incredibly thoughtful and sweet. He loved his treat and says «Thank You Aunty G for thinking of me: D
Overall, I’m really glad I got a chance to try these cupcakes out. It was a wonderful surprise and I am so very grateful.

I can always find a cupcake store no matter where I go! It calls me when I’m not even looking for it…
There were a few cupcakes options today probably because it was the weekend and late in the evening. I like they have mini size cupcakes so you can leave room to try more.
I got the Krispie chocolate cupcakes and vanilla cupcakes. The frosting on the vanilla was whip! I love whipped frosting way better than buttercreme. It wasn’t too much nor was it too sweet just perfect balance. It has real vanilla beans mixed in the batter as you can see the evidence of the spec.
The Krispie chocolate cupcake is a dark chocolate cake with Rice Krispie dipped in chocolate gnoche with a chocolate mouse center. So how was these little bundle of joy? DELICIOUS!!!
