History
Established in 1940.
Savvi Formalwear is a cooperative of the finest formalwear retailers in the world. The organization is collectively managed so that customers are seamlessly served across the United States and Canada. To ensure the very best service for every customer, all locations are family owned and operated by members in their respective communities. And all locations are served by local warehouses so that tuxedos look their best when you wear them for your event.
The cooperative model allows us to realize large company benefits regarding such things as buying power, resource pooling, and national branding, while simultaneously providing the exacting levels of customer service only possible with local, entrepreneurial ownership. It is this combination of corporate-level management and innovation, combined with the passion and commitment of our local store owners, that makes shopping at Savvi a unique and satisfying experience.
Meet the Business Owner
Sarno M.
Business Owner
In 1940, Ralph Sarno founded Sarno’s as a custom tailor shop. Years later, he handed the business over to his son Larry. In the late 1950’s, tuxedo sales and rentals became Sarno and Sons’ main business, and by the late 1960’s Larry had built a chain of 11 stores.
In 1978, Larry’s son Mark, joined the company full time. He had an integral role in modernizing the warehouse, delivery systems and computer inventory control systems. By 1986, Larry’s daughter Nancy, joined the team. Her focus within the company has been in marketing and customer relations.
In 1996, Sarno & Son moved the business two blocks down the street from where Ralph first opened his custom tailor shop. The new facility offered the opportunity to increase dry cleaning capacity and improve production. 1997 brought on further expansion, adding a sub-warehouse for distribution to Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. In 2002, Sarno & Son began work on a 23,000 square foot expansion to the warehouse
