Description

Specialties

Hand made custom picture frames in historic, contemporary, or unique designs using domestic hard and soft wood. Hand carved, stained, painted, or using traditional gold leaf water gilding techniques. Our gallery features fine art from the 19th — 20th centuries. Gilding on Glass, restoration of picture frames and gilded objects. Our Farmingdale location is where we produce our objects and where we have our small market garden and turkey farm.

History

Established in 1990.

David Keef & Johanna Moore started Artifacts in downtown Portland Maine in a storefront on Congress Street near the Museum of Art. We grew our business from selling mid-century decorative arts and furnishings in addition to our custom framing services to devoting our attention to vintage fine art and picture frame making.

Clients can make a convenient appointment to meet in Portland at our Old Port design space or they can come to Farmingdale where we mill and finish all the frame styles we offer. The Farmingdale location is convenient for our mid-coast, Down East, and Mountain clients… we have a great view at the top of the hill… flower gardens… and the turkeys we raise for customers’ holiday services.

Meet the Business Owner

Johanna M.

Business Owner

growing up in a home where your parents are craftspeople you can’t help but have some of it influence your direction in life. I have been producing art all my life with my first commission when I was in the 8th grade. I went to Temple University and studied foreign languages hoping I might be able to save the world. When I realized the futility of that noble goal, I moved with my husband to Maine where we soon opened Artifacts and began our journey as small business owners. Over twenty-five years have passed, and we still love our craft and we love working with artists and designers to come up with unique frames and finishes for their projects and with collectors in preserving their collections
