H&R Block

The first two times I had my taxes done here (2012 and 2013) they were okay. Nothing above and beyond, adequate services were provided. This year, I had a life change. Myself and my same-​gender partner got married last year and were one of the 300+ couples in Michigan to legally do so on 3÷22÷14. I called H and R Block, specifically this location, because we had both been customers in years past. I explained the situation and was assured they would be able to do our taxes.
The day of the appointment, we both arrived and once again explained our situation. We were told by the tax professional that we would have to prepare 5 separate returns: 1 join Federal return, and then we’d have to do 2 Federal single returns in ordrer to pull the information from those and file our state of Michigan taxes. She apparently did not realize that we are legally married in Michigan. I explained this to her and said we are legally married. She then went to talk with her supervisor, and we could overhear the entire conversation. He said they would have to call the Dept. of Treasury to find out what to do.
Sersiously? This is a nationally recognized chain that didn’t know how to handle our situation. We decided to go elsewhere, and got several recommendations from friends who were in a similar situation.
