Cup and Top Cafe

I had a pretty terrible cheddar broccoli soup there today. Pretty much a lukewarm green salty broth. Cup and Top, I think you can do way better than that.

Slow service, but otherwise really nice and really reasonably priced.

The food is fine but their order taking system is painfully slow. Sometimes if there are only 2 people in front of you, you may wait 8 min just to order. They need one person taking the orders, and another person serving the coffee/​muffins etc. I go to Cumberland Farms for my morning coffee now.

Raspberry chocolate chip cupcakes are amazing! A lot of their other baked goods are great, but not the food. Overpriced and slow service.

The peanut noodles here are amazing!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the cup & top. The coffee isn’t the best but the service is impeccable! Everyone who works here is effectively sweet and friendly.

This place represents all that is great about Western Massachusetts. The Cup is for coffee, tea, etc, and the Top is for the kids’ space in the back, where toddlers can be free-​range while parents sip a latte. It’s a community space, too.
But let’s talk about the food. My personal favorites are The Brassworks (a roast beef and horseradish sandwich) and the Easthampton (a turkey and cheddar panini).
They feature amazing coffee and tea, and they have a big pot of Honey Lemon Ginger brewed during the colder months. And of course, there is a kids’ menu to serve the smaller patrons.
The staff is friendly and accommodating. The café is clean and inviting, usually featuring local art on the walls. There is even a small book shelf with books for sale by local authors and illustrators. Because Western Mass is all about the literary. Occasional music or workshops make it a true community space.
Also, try the Mud Puddles. You’ll thank me later.

I stopped in here for lunch the other day and grabbed a phenomenal panini– I think it was called the Easthampton? Anyways, it was a turkey-​bacon-​spinach-​spicy mustard masterpiece! The cashier told me it’d be a little bit of a wait, but hey, if I order a panini and there ISNT a wait, now that’d be suspicious. It only ended up being about 5 mins and there was a ton of artsy fartsy things to look at while time passed. Definitely the best sandwich I have had since moving to the valley, and I can’t wait to go back for another try!

We had to go to Florence for a work-​related errand so we stopped by here with our 8 month old daughter. I found the café to meet the unique selling point of it being family friendly. There was a children play area that had lots to do for kids including a small slide. If you do not want that atmosphere and instead want a conventional café, I would not recommend this place. Its definitely meant to be enjoyed as a family or for the parent or guardian to relax with a cup of coffee as the kids play.
The business was quite long with an area near the windows and an area near the children play area. Staff seemed friendly and they smiled and said hello to my daughter. I would hope a family café would have nice staff and the staff seemed quite nice to myself and my daughter. Some indie rock played in the background, but then it transitioned to contemporary childrens folk/​alternative music, which was refreshing.
The coffee was ok, but that is all I had at the place. The food looked decent, but we did not have a chance to try it. My review then is only for the atmosphere of the establishment and the coffee I had. I would need to go there again with the family for the food.

Overall, the food here is pretty good. I like to stop by for breakfast and they use free range eggs, which is important to me and pretty uncommon in this sort of restaurant. They also offer a nice variety of coffees, good bagels, interesting vegetarian dishes. The prices seem reasonable, too. The service is earnest and friendly, and the place has a mellow feel to it.
Some reviewers seem put off by slow service, but the food is made to order and the wait doesn’t seem long for freshly prepared food.

The food is not good, the children’s play area can get loud, and the people behind the counter seem sour. Plus, I have a sneaking suspicion that they don’t particularly welcome men customers very much. So what’s to like? Florence could use a real coffee house like Northampton’s Woodstar, Sip, or The Roost. This ain’t it.

I came here with my daughter’s signing group and found this place to be rather cramped. The layout was a little strange but its a very kid friendly café so that could have been the reason. I ordered the beet and goat cheese salad. My spinach was welted with a few small pieces of beets and bottled vinaigrette dressing on the side that tasted of nothing but oil. This costed me $ 8.50 plus tax.
I also ordered a pumpkin spice latte that tasted nothing like Pumpkin spice. It was like a bland coffee with foamed milk. This was almost $ 5.
I would not come here again on my own. The only thing I enjoyed was the company and the Café has a small play area for the kids.

Don’t ever plan on getting a real breakfast here. Everything cooked with a microwave even my eggs and the girl making my food was such an airhead she forgot more than half of the ingredients in my order and I had to remind her. One star is one too many. Couldn’t even eat the food because I watched her prep it. Disgusting. Save yourself a waste of money and keep on moving.

I come here because I can walk from my home. They have outlets. They carry Tea Guys loose leaf tea for quite cheap. I don’t find their baked goods all that appealing. (Almond croissant and cashew thumbprints are notable exceptions, but their muffins are rubbery and all seemingly made with the same yellow cake-​ish batter with different ingredients thrown in.) Paninis are greasy. The rotating barista brigade is hit or miss. They have issues with efficiency. There currently is a quite ornery «like whatever» one working the counter. But others are sweet. Children’s area is nicely segregated in the back so you only hear an occasional shriek. Very glad they have become less stingy with the internet than when they opened.

I stopped into the Cup and Top after leaving a local customer of mine. I did not know the area and there was a good parking spot right in front of this little café so I figured I would stop and and have a bite!
After asking about a few sandwiches and which was most popular, I decided on getting a chicken curry sandwich and a house made ginger lemon iced tea.
Both items were delicious and I ate my lunch peacefully sitting on a bar stool in the café. The sandwich had just the right amount of curry flavor. It also hand almonds slivers and a chutney. The iced tea was very good although it was odd that it was more clear than tea colored.
I will certainly visit again if I am ever in this area!

Just stopped in for a warm beverage and a clean restroom, and found them both. The coffee was good. I’d go back. They have a $ 5 minimum for using a credit/​debit card, so I’m glad I happened to have cash with me.

I love the feel of the cup and top and I can agree with previous posters — their baked goods are quite delicious and I salute them for offering an array of gluten-​free options. I have not tried the soups, but I have tried numerous Deli case items. Not wowed by the food.
Still… nice to have a decent place in Florence for once!

I live right around the corner from Cup & Top. I’m a fan of almost every café in the area, but Cup & Top might be my favorite. It’s a great place to sit and do some reading or work on a paper. Their coffee is delicious and their food is wonderful. The rotating selection of soups is probably my favorite part of the menu, and their baked goods are glorious. I just ate a day-​old apple pecan cream scone and it was just as delicious and moist as a lot of freshly baked scones I’ve had elsewhere. I appreciate that the kids play area is completely separated from the tables in the front; I’m glad it’s a good place to bring kids, but I’m also glad that I don’t usually have to hear them while I read :-)
The only things I’d ever change about Cup & Top would be to add some bike racks outside and to extend the hours a little!

The Freakonomics guys might prove me wrong, but it’s probably safe to say that the majority of women over the age of 30 in the greater New England area have a female friend living in, or near, Northampton, MA with a small child (or two). The Cup and Top Café is a great place to meet up with your old room-​mate /​best friend /​partner in crime, who has recently become inundated with nappies, breast pumps, and car seats. While the front room of C+T is decorated with glass, plush armchairs and blonde wood tables, the back room is a kid’s paradise — with a squishy multi-​colored floor, big colorful blocks, Lego’s, picture books, and super comfy chairs for the «big people.» You can relax and enjoy a fantastic cup of organic, fair trade coffee (and a somewhat overpriced sandwich) and gossip like you were still in your 20s — until someone starts to get cranky and has to head home for a nap (husbands just have no stamina…).
