Elite Event: LNY at Pelicana Chicken

My review is long overdue but finally got a breather from tax season. This is my first Unilocal Elite event so I didn’t know what to expect. Despite feeling like a fish out of water, everyone was very welcoming and made some new friends. Also, having a couple of familiar faces helped later on (despite them being late *cough*you know who you are*cough*)
Based on the Owner’s (Julie) speech, Pelicana was the first Korean Fried Chicken restaurant in South Korea. They only recently came late into the game to join the competition of other establishments. However, we should thank Pelicana for paving the way as the Pioneer of Korean Fried Chicken because without it, other franchises wouldn’t have exist. Pelicana uses fresh batch of oil everyday so when they serve you your chicken, you won’t be getting chicken from re-​used oil from a day or two ago. I love the fact that Julie took some time and gave us a little background and just hearing her passion and goal for Pelicana I believe this establishment will be in good hands and will succeed.
I was able to sample a bunch of different flavors of Korean fried chicken. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to try all the flavors (40+) From my personal preference, I’m not too fond of the cheese types of flavor. I do LOVE the spicy flavors. They were just the right amount of spice and some of them kicked it up a notch. The beer pairs up with the chicken very nicely. All the chicken that was served was boneless to assist with easier eating, but the texture and taste of the chicken with the bones are what I’m going to look forward to next time I go here as a paying customer.
Shout out to Jando and the Queens Unilocal team for setting up this great event. I just want to thank Julie and her staffs for hosting this and giving us a little insight into her passion. You’ll see me back soon as a customer, and I’ll bring a couple of my friends too. Keep up the great work!

Story time: Again I am late with a review. But only almost a week late. In any case, when I heard of fried chicken and beer, I knew I had to come. My roommate was craving it and my instincts told me to make him jealous by taking numerous pictures of fried chicken and then sending it to him, respectively. He hated my guts and wanted to punch me in the face! Buhahhahaha! That’s the kind of sadist I am.
The journey here was literally «trail of tears» and if it wasn’t for making my roommate jealous of fried chicken, then I wouldn’t have come… lol of course I am joking. But because we aren’t barbaric with oxen and wagons, I simply sped dial my #basic B**** Kent, aka limo service! However, midway to Pelicana when he said, «I’m still getting ready,» I figured the bus coupled with Joshua V.‘s company would get our delicate cargo to the event faster.
Upon arrival the gang waited fervently for the food and then my hung-​over-​ness decided to take over. You know the usual inappropriate comments and initiation phrases. I was telling the newbies to bend over, to receive spankings in order to get into future events. Roger, you poor soul. I told you I was the gay-​keeper of who is allowed into events! Hahhahahahaha…
The chicken was amazing. And who would have thought that the servers would make our laziness top-​notched, by swinging around the tables and serving it up! YES! I couldn’t help but, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! It’s safe to say the best chicken were: BBQ Chicken, Fried Cheese (both of them), Spicy Chicken, the one with the green onions! Beer was meh, but that’s okay!
Environment: Definitely a nice «hole-​in-​the-​wall» where you wouldn’t expect to have pretty displays… on the floor. You know Louie just hanging out behind a glass door for display! You can see Pelicana surrounded by a green ray of light, representing envy as to how tasteful and delicious the chicken offered here!
Employees: One of the first comments that «Good Boy» made was «You have a nice shirt.» :D Awww innocence! Later during the day, Julie asked me about organic and GMOs, which I thought was interesting that she didn’t know considering her chicken is organic. *shrugs It’s okay. I told her what to look up. Overall the staff was wonderful *high five
Food: I cannot think about it. I just remember eating everything and feeling satisfied with every bite.
Drinks: The beers were okay. Hite, I forgot how mediocre it was. Definitely not my first beer of choose… but the other beer wasn’t that much greater.
Cost: Fabulously Free for Unilocal Elites + tip!
Accessibility: It’s definitely not the easiest to reach as you are required to catch the train then bus, or two buses. It took close to an hour to get there.

At least 40 types of chicken flavor can be found in this place.
Is kind of hard to choose your favorite flavor chicken, when you have the option of 40 type of flavor and each flavor you love it for one specific reason and more when, what you are eating is organic, and no process.
It was very funny how they name the utensil that we were using to eat the chicken. «The finger condom»
The drinks where good they had some Korean beers that had a good and refreshing taste
The service was amazing the staff was on top of the hungry of Unilocalers, making sure that they where eating and drinking.

As someone who was on a temporary diet abstaining from meat and alcohol, this place certainly made me break! (And I don’t regret it one bit! Well, maybe a little, but in a good way…)
Also, how often is it that an Elite event is in my hood?! Of course I had to come check out the goods. And boy was it good.
Arriving early, we armed ourselves with free beer from both bottle and tower. (Hite was the best.) Then slowly but surely, the food started coming out. Armed with our finger condoms, we dove into what would turn out to be just a fourth of what Pelicana had to offer on their menu. Small, large, fried, sauced — the chicken came in a variety of shapes and colors and flavors. The one that stood out to me the most was, of course, the spicy variety. The chili one was I think the spiciest of them all and definitely had me reaching for more beer, but if I had more room in my stomach, I would’ve definitely gotten more.
Of course, a review wouldn’t be complete without shouting out a few people:
— Julie, the owner, for the inspiring speech about the history of Pelicana. We definitely felt the passion and love you have for your food, and for good reason! You can never go wrong with organic chicken, 48 different flavors, and frying oil that is changed daily. You make the unhealthy healthy, and that is a feat in itself!
— My fellow Elites Maria C., Jon V., Jenn F., Joshua V., Kent C., and those who didn’t want the party to end and went karaōke-​ing after!
— Nelson, our unofficial photographer, for withstanding countless requests for a photo op!

Unfortunately I had a small bout of food poisoning/​stomach virus (?) a few days before the event, so I wasn’t able to fully enjoy the event but I couldn’t pass up seeing some of my Unilocal buddies!
I just wanted to say how wonderful Julie and the staff was. Her «speech» was so candid that her passion for Pelicana radiated out. She told us how she feeds the same food to her mother three times a week. That is how much she trusts this chicken, being organic and not fried in day (s) old oil. Also, the employees were extremely helpful. When I needed a fork, they got it for me right away and I didn’t even ask them! They went around from table to table making sure everyone had want they needed/​wanted. Very sweet indeed.
Out of the little I ate, I enjoyed the soy garlic wings, my usually go-​to flavor. Honestly, it’s not the best KFC I have had but I am intrigued by all the flavors they offer! I may be back, keeping in mind that parking isn’t so great in the area and the restaurant is small.

ORGANIC, KOREAN CHICKEN, AND FRESH OIL.
What do these 3 things have in common? They produce some of the most succulent, tender, and tasty chickens that I have ever tasted in my life. And I’ve had chickens aplenty.
Vegetarians and Vegans can roll their eyes now.
Pelicana Chicken was the original Korean fried chicken. Say what now??? Yes, this was told to us by Julie the owner. Now there isn’t a way to find out even with Google if that is true BUT the way these chicken tasted, I’ll tell ya… it is hard to disprove that.
48 DIFFERENT FLAVORS. Yes, you heard right 48 DIFFERENT flavors. Now, at the event there were only about 12 flavors or so. Still, my mouth is watering just the thought of trying all the other flavors this place has to offer.
The thing to keep in mind about this Korean fried chicken place is that they change their oil with EVERY batch of fried chicken. I’m a bit skeptical as to whether that can sustain in the long run because their overhead can be quite high with just the oil turnover alone BUT it is in a low key area other than 2 popular Korean BBQ places on Northern Boulevard so rent wise they should be fine.
Going back to the owner, she was genuinely very friendly and very passionate about her business. Every business owner should be like this.
The place is on the small side. This might have been a sushi place back in the day. It can still sit a good amount of people say around 25.
Now onto the food.
ZOMG. Not even kidding.
My favorite flavors were the snow cheese, soy garlic, and spicy.
For all those that like Kyochon and all these other places, do yourself a favor and come check this place out.

How often does Jando put together an Elite event on a Saturday afternoon? Like NEVER! (OK maybe once or twice) So when this one popped up on the calendar with 2 days notice AND it’s in my neighborhood, I jumped on it, wrestled out an RSVP and WHEEEE, I’M IN! Spicy chicken is the next best thing to ring in the New Year since they outlawed firecrackers! It would have been doubly apropos if it were the Year of the Chicken!
This was going to be a quiet afternoon for me originally, but a YEE always turns everything upside down. I laughed when Joshua told Jando that he had given up beer & fried food for Lent. Jando’s like, «DUDE, what are you doing here?!? That’s all we’re about today!» And it was, because from that point on, it was non-​stop beer and fried chicken in endless combinations of flavors, shapes, textures and sauces. I just lost count, but I would not be surprised if they laid out all 48 varieties from the menu. There were some seemingly healthy sides like the jalapeño pickles, corn & cabbage slaw and sweet daikon, but those only served to clear the palate for the chunks of deep fried chicken rolling out of the kitchen. Julie, the owner talked about how fresh their organic chicken is and that they use fresh oil in the fryers everyday. It shows in the taste and texture of every light, crispy piece, which is why my favorites were the sauceless ones.
OK Nelson, do you HAVE to get a close-​up shot of EVERY plate of chicken?! (rolls eyes) There are some hungry Unilocalers here! (and you know how they/​we/​I get. No offense, those are some nice shots for the Elite event page BTW ;) And what’s with these finger condoms?! Do we lick them? Maybe I’ll stick to chopsticks. At some point, Juan handed me and Elaine shot glasses and we pounded some soju. Thanks for the belly warmer, bud!
All in all, a great afternoon with friends old and new. Thanks to Jando, Julie and the rest of the Pelicana crew for a great time (shout out to you too, YeJi)! You guys are as saucy, hot and sweet as the spicy marinated boneless! ;P I’ll be back with my crew to eat the rest of the menu!

This event was a test from on high. A brave traversal through deceptively cold weather was my gauntlet… but from the freezer, I went straight into the frying pan. To add some context to my struggle, a common tradition to people with certain beliefs requires a sacrifice of the sort; 40 days and 40 nights without two vices of mine, both of which go together like peas in a pod, were the stars of the show which Pelicana had to offer (i.e. Fried chicken and beer). Note: I’ve actually given up all fried foods.
Now that we’ve got that bit of information out of the way, this Unilocal event still did not disappoint, despite the fact that I couldn’t really sample the wares. Why is that???
One: Service was impeccable — minutes after being one of the first five to arrive, beer towers (see pictures) that easily dwarfed some of our shorter Unilocal brethren were already being put up… with the staff offering bottles of Hite (Korean brand beer) in the interim. From beginning to end, the attentiveness was on point; clearing up dishes, asking if refills of beverages were required (water for me, as I’ve already explained), and persistent table to table service of the various fried chicken types they had on the menu (e.g. whole fried chicken, marinated fried chicken, really hot fried chicken, etc…).
Two: The product — yes, while I couldn’t taste it first hand… as previously explained… I could smell it, I was in a room full of people who were downing it like they had nothing to live for but fried chicken, and I heard a very passionate owner (Julie was a sweetheart) advocate the sh*t out of her product. As one of the five main senses, my sense of smell was in a state of fried food euphoria. Like the eponymous protagonist in «Mrs. Doubtfire» exclaimed (R.I.P. Mr. Williams) «I found the best way to keep from smoking again is to be around those who do smoke.» Essentially, I was Mrs. Doubtfire, and while I wanted to «smoke» so badly, just being around the stuff was more than enough to appease my wanton appetite for fried chicken. Hearsay accounts of the chicken from my fellow Unilocalers showed a pattern; extreme happiness and mouth-​chewing noises. They didn’t need to speak, their actions spoke louder than words as they kept getting in line for the stuff. Despite some pre-​arrival conditions, both temporary and permanent (food-​poisoning and 100 lb frames be damned… you know who you are), all those who could eat fried chicken on this day (i.e. everyone save for yours truly) did eat it… and they kept on eating it. And with the chicken being the healthiest it possibly can (oil changed for frying everyday, as opposed to every two or three… as well as the use of organic products), eating deep fried pieces of love in large quantities here may not be the coronary one might typically expect from such behavior.
Three: Ownership — while I mentioned Julie in item «Two» I feel she deserved special mention (as well as the paragraph for item «Two» running a bit long…). Not only is she the owner of this particular storefront for Pelicana, but she is also a kindred spirit, an honorary Unilocal elite if you will. Why this conclusion? Well, after an in depth and insightful run through of the history of Pelicana (longest running «KFC» joint in the world, multiple locations, with this particular establishment being the first in the USA), she also elaborated on her involvement in getting this place off the ground. Former English teacher (a very noble profession), Julie then went on to usher Pelicana onto American shores, leaving a sure and steady career as a teacher, and into the treacherous and unpredictable jaws of the unforgiving food service industry. Her explanation you ask? Well, it was a simple «because I love food» (I may be paraphrasing). Her mission is to uphold Pelicana’s directive of serving the healthiest and freshest chicken possible (refer to item/​paragraph «Two»). As she went around table to table distributing 10% off coupons to the joint, I couldn’t help but compliment the speech and the food (despite only having a handful of pickles and radishes).
Four: The company — what always makes or breaks these events is the company you keep, and the delightful trend of good people frequenting Queens elite events is still in full effect. Friendly faces and good conversation were in no short supply. The need for libations, while always a social lubricant for me, was wholly unnecessary… as light-​heartedness, humor, and good vibes from all you wonderful Queens elites was more than enough to get me to a nice wine-​drunk state (figuratively).
A tip of the hat to our fearless leader Jando. Ever expanding the horizons of the Queens faithful, perhaps he chooses venues in less frequented/​less accessible parts of town to see who will follow. Given his track record (batting 1.000 at the moment), I’d say it would be in our best interests to follow the dude wherever he picks next.

There are few things that resonate from the very beginning to end. Let that be organic, Korean fried chicken, and new batch of oil to fry with every day. What?! I can’t emphasize enough how I didn’t mind hauling myself across town. I’d do it all over again just because I have this not-​so-​secret-​secret love affair with food.
On what would be a brisk, cold, yet sunny Saturday afternoon, Elites from all over the city converged on the Murray Hill neighborhood of Flushing to welcome Pelicana to the neighborhood, credited as the first to begin the KorFC (Korean Fried Chicken) movement. This is their first venture in the U.S., mind you, so bravo!
How do they fare? You’re going to love these words:
Flavorful. Moist. Juicy. Tender. Boneless.
Purveyors of Korean Fried Chicken are going to have a field day choosing from the 48 variations of their tried and true boneless chicken recipe. Of course, I’ve read my fair share of opinions beforehand but as we all should, I’ve made up my own damn mind. I am a fan. We all had a sampling from at least a dozen variations, and my tummy yearns for the scallion sauce version even now.
Pelicana did this event up right. Beer pairs well with fried chicken, both of which were readily available in a low pressure environment to mix and mingle amongst Unilocalers. We never tasted the oil, simply because the chicken was fried so well, and fried fresh. As with most restaurants in this genre, they’re made to order for patrons of the establishment, and that does take time. Have another beer! Usual accompaniments like pickled radish and pickles are available as well as corn salad, which certainly quenched the heat of the spicier chicken morsels. The beer towers filled with Coors were a fun touch. I bet I could clear a yard on my own, but that’s for a different lifetime. On hand, were also O.B. and Hite of which I’m thrilled to see.
Service was impeccable and props go to Yeji and «Good Boy» for doing a great job. Big thanks to Jando and Julie K. of Pelicana for organizing this event!

Plenty of fried chicken on hand for this event. Lots of different types. They use fresh oil every day and organic chicken! My favorites are the Boneless Snowing Cheese and spicy chicken.
Service:
The staff was great, very attentive and helpful. They had finger protectors on hand for to eat the chicken. They look silly, but very helpful if you don’t want to get your hands full of sauce! Julie the owner was super nice and a great host

Thank you Jando and Julie for putting together this event that taught me so much about the Korean fried chicken industry. I love how Pelicana is organic, fresh, and offers 48 different flavors. That’s something you don’t ever find at other Korean fried chicken restaurants. I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on all these different flavored chickens!
We were all given little finger protectors, which I’ve never seen before. They were a little useless though because they were so big and kept slipping off. Oh well, chicken is meant to be eaten with the fingers! My absolute favorites were the Boneless Scallion + Scallion Sauce, Soy Garlic and Boneless Snowing Cheese. The spicy chickens were a bit too much for me to handle but great for those who like to kick it up a notch.
Great event, great staff, and great owner! Julie was so sweet and gave us all parting gifts. Also, A+ to the staff at Pelicana. They are so attentive and made sure our plates were always full and tables were clean.

I love Flushing, it’s such a bin rant neighborhood with so many fun things to see, do and eat. Unfortunately I don’t come out here too often because the commute can be a bit daunting (who are we kidding, the 7 train [and every other train] hasn’t been working properly on weekends for past few months — it’s awful) but I’m really glad I was able to make it to Pelicana Chicken.
Pelicana Chicken has been around in Korea since the early 1980s and this is their first location in the states. They really pride themselves on using the best ingredients, organic chicken, clean vegetable oil that’s cleaned out several times and producing the best Korean fried chicken that they can in get this, 48 DIFFERENT FLAVORS. That’s amazing!
The owner of this location, Julie K, is super sweet and her story is an inspiration to anyone who’s ever been fed up with their job and afraid to follow their passion.
She was a high school teacher who quit her job to become a restauranteur and devote herself to opening up Pelicana. Her sincerity and heart are really represented in how delicious their chicken is and in how awesome all of the employees were (shout out here to Jenji and «Good Boy»).
Everyone at Pelicana was fantastic and my fave chicken flavors were their sesame marinated, the snowding cheese and parmesan cheese and their soy garlic.
It was also super cool to try some Korean beers that I’ve never had before. OB was pretty good, but Hite was my winner for the night… oh and the «finger condoms» were pretty funny but I ended up using chop sticks instead.

A great event filled with so much chicken and endless beer. I’m so glad this event was in Flushing, so close to me. I never heard of Pelicana before but now know this is the place to go to for organic fried chicken. It’s been around for some time but this is the first and only establishment in the US. They have 48 different flavors of fried chicken and change their oil every day unlike other fried chicken establishments.
This event was not too crowded and had plenty of food. My favorite was the soy garlic and the scallion sauce chicken. I preferred the regular chicken than the boneless but that’s just me. It was good being able to try a sample of their variety. They also had «finger condoms» which I’ve never seen before. I definitely put them to good use and kept my fingers clean throughout. The servers came around a few times to tell us when the next item was coming out and even brought some food to the table! All were so nice, cleared our plates right away and were very attentive. Julie was such a great host and even gave out little parting gifts at the end!

Korean fried chicken (KFC) and beer in Flushing? I couldn’t pass it up. Flushing is a bit of a trek for me, from Jersey, but the journey was worth it. The venue is far out in Flushing, about two miles away from the Main St. subway stop.
This was my first elite event, as an elite (I went to one elite event before as a +1), and I was excited that the venue was a Korean place, being that I’m Korean!
From Julie’s speech (the owner), I learned that Pelicana was one of the originators of KFC and although the chain is very popular in Korea, this is their first location, in the US.
The chicken was great, plentiful, and tasted very fresh. They guaranteed us that the oil is changed everyday. We were graciously given a large selection of chicken, which included a variety of different flavors. All of the flavors were very tasty. The soy garlic, scallion, and sesame marinated were the stand outs. Most of the chicken served, were of the boneless variety, which I liked.
While we were eating the servers came around and informed us when more flavors of chicken came out from the kitchen. They also brought around trays of the chicken to give us while we were eating. I thought that was awesome.
We were also treated to Korean beer, which was a nice touch. I’m a big fan of Korean beer and the Hite and OB beer tasted great with the chicken.
As this was an elite only event, I got to meet a lot of other elites. Glad to see everyone was very friendly.

The event was just the right size — not too crowded, so you could walk around and chit chat with everyone and talk to the staff, and it was great to see everyone there.
I liked how attentive Julie and Yeji were to my boo since she’s all knocked up. They were about to kick some folks off of a table to give her a space to sit, but that wasn’t necessary. We just had so much fun talking to everyone.
There was plenty of beer, and plenty to eat. While I was getting my eat on, the servers did encourage me to try everything and assured that they would bring out more chicken.
My favorites were the snow cheese chicken, spicy chili chicken and also the marinated chicken. The snow cheese reminded me of chicken covered with garlic parmesan cheese, spicy chili had some serious kick to it with plenty of flavor. The marinated chicken was sweet and also super flavorful as well.
I liked the corn salad (it was more like cole slaw with corn in it) to break up the spiciness of the chicken. The beer towers are super cool — this way you can have a giant container of beer without waiting for a server or having your big pitcher of beer go warm.
Pelicana is definitely a standout from the other «chons» out there.

It’s been about 5 hours, and I’m still super full from all the delicious CHICKEN I ate!!! Yummmmy!
Big thanks to Jando (the most awesome person ever) and Julie (the owner of Pelicana) for throwing such an amazing event!!! Everyone was SUPER friendly and I loved how it was an intimate event. We had soo much chicken, and it was all tasty! I liked the snowing cheese, spicy soy garlic (it was spicy!!), marinated wings, bbq wings, scallion sauce wings (love my scallions!)…ok, I liked ‘em all! There’s 48 total at this place too btw, so you’re not limited to just a few flavors! I also appreciated how all the chicken was organic and the oil gets changed every day-​I could tell it was healthier than the other KFC spots out there!
The beer towers were cool too, btw! Overall, this is a great spot and Jando, we love you!

According to the owner, this place was the first restaurant to produce the king of barfood: korean fried chicken, and with her sincerity, I believe her. Pelicana’s 30+ year history has finally led up to their first branch in the states. Her story about how much effort she put into opening this restaurant up just makes you want to support it. Organic chicken, constantly changing the oil, and 40+ different flavors is all I need to win me over.
Indeed there was a lot of chicken flavors. Garlic bbq, snow cheese, marinated, spicy, regular fried were just a tiny selection of what they offered at this event. I barely had the stomach room to try everything.
Being that its still early in the year, I met many new Elites and hope this event showcased the greatness of an Unilocal Queens event. Personally I think weekend events are awesome and there should be more. It was a superb event Jando and Julie hosted and can’t wait for the next one.

As always, I am so honored to be on the list to attend Queens Elite Events! Today we make our way here to try South Korea’s very first fried chicken franchise. Their first establishment in the states to join the fried chicken competition! They are in the right place and we are in for a treat!
We were able to sample various flavors of fried chicken from spicy to garlic to original crispy fried chicken. It was so thoughtful of the team to serve us boneless so that it is easier for us to eat and less messy. My favorite happened to be the spicy crispy chicken. The piece at first sight seemed harmless. Chicken pieces were cut in bite sized and had a bright orange powder shine to it. After a bite, I thought it had great flavors of savory and the right amount of seasoning but not spicy. Wait for it… then the spicy kick sneaks up on you! Woo… that blew me away! We have sample sides that helped rid the lingering spiciness in our mouths such as the corn salad, jalapeño pickles, and radish. My favorite was the corn salad which tasted like a cole slaw with corn; it was different but it was good!
Julie, the owner took time out to speak about her challenges and sacrifices to pursue her dreams of food. It was such an inspirational speech and I was deeply touched by her sincerity. I really did not know Pelicana Chicken was the pioneer of Korean-​style fried chicken even before our other favorites, BonChon and KyoChon. It was an eye-​opening event!
Thank you Jando and Queens Unilocal team for setting another great event and gave us the opportunity to learn so much today! Shout out to Julie, Yeji, Good Boy, and the rest of the staff for being so friendly and ready to party with us!

I’m very glad to have found Pelicana thanks to the Elite event. I live nearby and had no idea what I was missing. I took home a menu and plan on ordering from them soon.
The chicken was great. I love the fact that they have so many flavors. It was also my first time trying Korean beer and I really enjoyed it. Everyone was so friendly, there was a good turnout for a Saturday and just the right number of people to fill the restaurant comfortably.
I met several cool Unilocalers and felt very welcomed. The décor was pretty cool. Julia and the staff did a great job taking care of us. We sampled several flavors of chicken and I particularly liked the boneless ones with the dry seasonings although the spicy ones were good too.
