Established in 1985.

Brief History

Englishman Cliff Hunt started selling secondhand marine parts from his hatchback in 1975. Over the next few years Sailorman grew from a garage to a small hole-​in-​the-​wall to its current location, an over 10,000 square foot warehouse, in 1982. The current owner, Chuck Fitzgerald, purchased Sailorman in 1985. Now dubbed as «The World’s Largest and Most Unique New and Used Marine Emporium», you can find just about anything NEW or USED for boats.

An absolute disappointment. Sailorman is basically a permanent marine FLEA MARKET. The place is huge and they have a lot of inventory. I’ve been going there for 20 years. There are so many cool things to look at sometimes it’s fun just to browse around and see what you can find. I go there for the fishing department mostly. They have a really limited inventory that’s mostly odds and ends. None of it is really a complete selection or makes any sense together as a department. What upsets me about the store is that time after time I’m finding USED items for prices MORE EXPENSIVE or the same as I can buy them for new. Maybe the owner is a hoarder? Who knows. Seen a homemade floating baitwell today, used and homemade for $ 80. I can buy something Similar all day long for $ 50 new. I’m going there for deals. and walking out with all my money time after time. I’m just not going anymore.

Nice friendly staff. More stuff than you can imagine. Antique stuff and slightly used. A true sailors happy spot. My friend didn’t want to leave. The staff is knowledgeable about everything in the shop. Wished we had a place like this in Fairhope.

BUYER BEWARE! Stopped by on 4÷29÷14 to look for a part for a new used sailboat I recently acquired. Spoke with a gentleman about needing a some cams to repair a cam cleat and he pointed to me in the general direction. I Found a Cam Cleat marked 11.95 ± and showed it to him to ask if he thought it would work. He said it should and even remarked it was a good buy, in addition he even remembered purchasing «about 5 years ago from a liquidation». I went to pay for it and remembered I need some stainless fasteners. When I cam back to the cashier to pay for the fasteners and cam cleat there was a second price tag of $ 61.00± in addition to the original price of 11.95±
No one had said anything to me at this point and the second price tag even looked old and dirty (maybe to make me think I had missed seeing it) NO WAY. When I questioned the cashier about it she told me it was actually two parts (which it was not as the assembly was permanent).
If it was a legitimate pricing error I should have been told right away when I showed them (remember he even commented «it was a good buy and was 5 years old»). Instead they resorted to sleazy and underhanded tactics for which they lost this customer as I left without making any purchase and will not be back. The irony was I just found it brand new on Amazon for $ 11.95!

Way cool place!
I was overdressed from Ft Lauderdale boat show and didnt get a hello! (I was in store for an hour)
If I had just crawled out of the bilge and came in with the used part they would’ve loved me!
Never judge a man by what he is wearing!
I looked like a yacht owner but I’m really at bilge rat!
I did see some excellent service given to others!

Sailorman offers some pretty darn good deals on various items of fishing, boating and marine equipment. They buy up discontinued, overstocked and used items then retail them at reduced prices. However, as a practical matter is a good idea to know in advance what the prices of any items are in advance. Every now and then I’ve found equal or equivalent items at West Marine on discount at the same or less than Sailorman, but not often.
Here’s an example of a bargain I got. I wanted a good fishing real and custom quality fishing pole. I found what I was looking for, being the reel and pole combined for $ 475.00. Later, checking around I found the same reel, sold alone, for $ 520.00 and the pole for $ 340.00. So, I scored a $ 385.00 savings; not bad!
One of the better things about Sailorman that I have found, and which keeps me coming back is that their staff is not only customer friendly but knowledgeable as well. Though I’ve been around boats all my life, I’ve found myself depending upon their knowledge upon several occasions.
Here are a couple tips:
1. If you are buying a big ticket item such as a windless or the like, don’t hesitate to make an offer, as they are usually willing to bargain on bigger ticket items.
Five Stars, because for what they are, there aren’t any better in the area.

This is truly a great place. The large inventory of new, used, and — in some cases — out of production items is wonderful. I spent quite some time here just making myself familiar with the store. While you CAN find the items cheaper online, they are not the much more expensive at the store, there is no shipping and handling, and you have the pieces immediately.
I will definitely be returning.

If you own a power boat or even better a sail boat this is the place for used inexpensive stuff. The staff is very friendly and will bargain on the price. This place is like the MECCA for sail boaters.
