Mariners Point Golf Course & Driving Range

The other night my buddies Dj, Jerett, and Romeric and I wanted to hit some golf balls because we all just got some new clubs and wanted to try them out! So we find out that San Bruno and cypress lawn ranges both close pretty early. So we find out that this one in foster city closes at 10 so we drive over 20 min away so we can golf. Drove all the way to foster city read the sign for hours of operation and it said 10. It was about 9 pm when we got there but one gate was closed. So we went through the other. When we get in we walk past a guy who we thought just finished playing. Once we go up to the hitting range he then tells us that they are closed. But the sign says 10. Not 9. And why look at us wait for a bit then tell us you guys are closed? You should of told us right when u saw us that you guys are closed. So we were upset because the sign lied to us and we had wasted gas driving all the way over to foster city. So at the end of the night we did not get to hit any golf balls. Thanks. Could of saved us a trip if you changed your hours of operations.

When Im in the area I always stop by Mariners Point. I think the whole extra money to hit off the grass is silly, but rules are rules. If you’re gonna charge extra to hit off the grass tees at least make sure the grass tees are well maintained. The 9 hole course is fun and I think it’s AWESOME that you can play at night.
I would give this place 4 stars but I cant because my brother in law got his entire bag of clubs stolen here. There’s another review here of someone’s leather jacket being stolen. It’s funny I live in the East Bay and normally golf in Oakland, San Leandro and Alameda and never worry about my bag growing legs and walking away. Is Foster City really the «hood»?

I usually only come here for the driving range so my review will only include info about that. The range has two levels and there are plenty of targets for you to aim at to increase accuracy and power. Because of the drought the range isn’t being watered as much which is completely the right thing to do. So in terms of «beauty» this doesn’t really have it but it is near the water so the view is pretty good from the second level. It goes out to around 300+ yards, so no matter your level you can still practice.
Plenty of parking but it does get packed during certain hours. Decently priced and the balls are not that expensive to get a bucket or two of. They are also open until 10pm on weeknights which is nice whenever I feel like hitting some balls randomly. All in all it’s a good place to come to get some practice on the driving range.

What a great course!
The price was right! Pre booked online and got to play a round for $ 8. Sounds great! When we got there it was a nice day, super windy tho! There was also a junior golf camp going on when we played at noon on a Monday. Other than that there was a couple people behind us and in front of us.
The course is very well maintained. It was a little muddy in a couple areas but after a rain that’s not really the courses fault.
The only bad thing I have to say about our experience which made me have to take away a star was concerning the junior golf camp I mentioned earlier. On the second hole I hit my first shot and it wasn’t bad! Got right on a little hill right next to the green. I was pretty proud of that shot considering this was only my third round of golf played, ever. As my husband and I made the trek to our balls I see this preteen kid just walk up to my ball and pick it up and start to walk back to his camp group. Now, I know he couldn’t have thought this was his ball because it was an expensive PINK ball. There’s really no mistaking that! I had to walk to him quickly and say, «No honey, that is not your ball!» He turned to me and said, «I know, was I supposed to leave it there»? I mean, I know he’s just learning the game and he’s 12 but I am just learning too and I know you’re not supposed to pick up someone else’s ball and walk away with it. But, if there is a camp going on… there should be NO reason these kids are on the course if they don’t know super basic rules. I let this go pretty quick but then it just became annoying when the same thing happened to my husband on the 8^th hole with a different kid picking up his ball.
So, I would LOVE to play this course again but maybe we’ll call beforehand to make sure the camp isn’t in session: P

Perfect place for beginners like me to work on our swings. Driving range is nothing special but hey, it works for me. $ 14 cash for large basket of balls (165). Has a small putting green and even a chipping area (extra fee) to practice as well. Don’t forget about the small 9 hole course they have running alongside the bay!

Great little double decker range. Average range ball rates about 7 dollars for 60 balls, on a refillable card. Small little pro shop. Since it is part of Mariner Golf Course, it is a good warm up for sure. Long hitters, over 300 yards be aware the back net is pretty close. This is not a problem for me, of course, haha… They also have a short practice area, for which they charge. And an adequate putting practice area. The best thing about this location though is their 19^th hole, which is called The 19^th Hole, figure that. It is a nice bar, complete with all the necessary assortment of adult beverages. Some good ales and beers on tap, and generally nice people behind the bar. Going back soon, mainly because I have 13 more dollars on my range ball card. FORE!!!

Only course in the Bay Area with lights so you can play golf at night.
Great course for beginners. Everything is par three.
Well maintained course.
Short, easy to walk course.
Course managers are very friendly.
Driving range is big.

Only has a few course hazards.
Can sell out during popular times.
No marshals.
Can get very windy.
Under the flight path into SFO so can get noisy too.

Nice short course with a driving range, convenient location, friendly staff.
I got my leather jacket STOLEN though, which begs the question; what kind of people go here? The staff were very friendly and helpful to do their best… but if you have any valuables, keep them hidden!
(PS. if you see anyone wearing a men’s smart leather jacket, aim a golfball at them for me :)

Another Friday post? How about another golf related review? Sorry, I know these may not interest a lot of you guys, but I’m tired of seeing them in my «to write» list. Besides, with my writer’s block, I can’t think of anything else to write about anyways…
As far as 9-​hole, par 3’s go, Mariners is the best one I’ve been to so far. Although, considering how Golden Gate is their only competition, that might not be saying much. The course is really short and perfect for beginners, but it’s not bad for more experienced players either. Rounds are cheap ($ 16), the weather is generally nice, and the play can be relaxing (save for watching out for any errant balls/​shots).
Since the course is so simple and straight forward, it’s not particularly difficult. There’s only one water hazard (on the last hole) and the traps aren’t major threats (though the lips on the bunkers are pretty high). In fact, the biggest challenge (for beginners) might simply be shot control; the first half of the course runs next to the Bay Trail and nearly every hole is narrow and crammed together, so it’s easy for shots to stray out of bounds or onto a neighboring hole.
Beyond the course itself, Mariners also has a driving range, a putting green, a chipping area, and a restaurant/​grill/​bar (I think). While I can’t say much about them (I’ve only played on the course), they look pretty decent from a distance. I certainly can’t imagine any of them being worse than what Golden Gate has to offer; legitimate range versus a half dozen stalls that hit into netting? Not even close.
Despite the fact Golden Gate is a lot more convenient to get to, I certainly don’t mind making the drive down here. Not only does Mariners have the better course, but their practice facilities are better than their sister spot’s (San Bruno Golf Center). Plus, they have twilight rates if you want to get in a round in the early evening. If/​when you do come here, be sure to take in the view, especially on holes 4 and 5. Wish I had taken some pictures!

If I had one word to describe this place, it would be «Good».
Pros:
— Decent rates for the range. (Buy a range card and get more value)
–Has a grassy tee area.
— Good place to work on short game.
— Not too crowded when I go. (weekday mornings)
Cons:
— You might get hit with a ball
— Short game area costs too much.
— Sometimes High Schools go there to practice and they can be a bit annoying.

A few of my coworkers and I decided to go play this short par-​3 course in San Mateo last Sunday and we had a terrific experience. We got to Mariners Point around 2pm on a Sunday. It was a little busy there, but that’s because it was a Sunday, and everyone who golfs plays on the weekends. There were a total of 6 people in our group and the first available tee times we were able to get were 3:40 and 3:50. So we had about an hour and a half to kill, so we decided to check out the driving range.
They have a 2-​story driving range at Mariners Point. We were on the top deck and got a great view of the range. It is a very well-​maintained driving range, and there are multiple distance targets, as well as nets to work on distance calibration and directional practice. My only complaint about the driving range is the cost of a bucket of balls. $ 12.00 for 96 golf balls! Goodness gracious! I guess that’s the price we pay for going to a nice range (and living in California).
After our epic driving range practice which saw a number of balls fade up and to the right, we did a little bit of putting on their practice green, and got ready to play our round. It is only $ 15/​person for 9 short par-​3 holes, which is terrific practice to work on the short game. This course is great for confidence building and for getting pars. Longest hole is no farther than about 170 I think. Ended up playing well enough (by my standards) — got a few pars, 3 putted a lot (haha), and had a great time with my coworkers and my wife. Got to see some great views of the Bay and the city in the background. Weather was perfect there, and we definitely plan on coming back. Only minor complaint about the actual course is that the holes overlap and they are very close to each other, so balls are flying everywhere. Definitely keep a heads up when there are multiple groups playing around you! Other than that, I highly recommend Mariners Point Golf Course for a lazy Saturday or Sunday day of golf without having to play a full course!

Very disappointed. I think more and more if us are not carrying cash around since it’s so easy to go without it. Cash only policy only works when you are a great sandwich shop open 2 hours a day and sell out instantly. I most likely will never come back since I have thus as my memory and several other card taking ranges near by. And thanks for the ATM in the lobby with a $ 2 charge to use and then my bank charges.

Ive visited Mariners for nearly 15 years now with plenty of fun stories and great memories.
My GF and I have been golfing together almost every weekend and we visit here at least once every other week. Sometimes to hit a bucket of balls sometimes to play a round but every visit is a good one (depending on my game that day.)
The wind in the afternoon can be a bit rough, as the golf course is on a world class windsurfing and kitesurfing venue off 3^rd ave. So if you are going any time after 2 PM during the spring/​summer/​fall bring a hoodie!!! Sometimes its warm enough and still windy to go out in shorts and a shirt but its a good idea to have something in the car just in case.
The holes are short, specifically the 2^nd and 9^th holes, but dont let that fool you. These small 9 hole courses are rough if you shank it.
Yes you can drink on the course but don’t get wasted!

If you’re looking for a short ride on a fast golf course, get your arse over here. It is affordable, and its nine Par 3 holes will get you off the course in double-​time. Unless you plan to hit a hundred range balls on the driving range, don’t bring your woodies, and if you rent clubs, all you get are irons anyways. The yardage is «under par» (pun intended, heh), so you’ve come to the right place to boost your confidence and scratch off some pars on your score card. In fact, this is clearly the BEST place in the Bay Area, if you want to learn how to golf!
Fun tips: Take in the views, as they’re spectacular and reason enough to come here. Stand there and and try to identify all the air carriers passing barely 300 feet overhead, bound for SFO, while everyone behind you gets pissed off, baahaha. Try hitting some of the geese grazing on Holes 4 through 7, they don’t give a crap about anything. Eat and drink at the clubhouse afterward, but avoid the fried shit. Go into the bathroom and laugh at how outdated the plumbing is!

This has got to be on top of my list as of right now. This would be considered more as a practice course with cheap prices for the range and 9-​hole. It’s a great time to go with friends and go golfing. Anyway, the prices are very competitive.
The driving range has two floors, you can pour all your balls into this opening from the ground and and so your golf ball will automatically come up from this tee holder, theres a bar & grill, a huge crowd gathered for the 9-​holes, etc.
I had such a great time with my friends/​fam and I’d come back to hit more and play more!
Overall I love this golf course. The prices are just cheap and they provide with clubs lol or rentals if possible. This is so far the premier practice session for me and my people.

Played Mariners last night for the first time since I was a teenager. Walked in at 8:30 intending to just hit a bucket at the range, saw how empty it was and decided to play a round. Was expecting Saturday night to be a madhouse there but then again it has been probably 15 years. $ 16 bucks for 9 holes, had the course pretty much to myself save for one couple a hole ahead of me. I’d consider myself an «adequate» golfer, and Mariners lends just enough of a challenge to help you improve while at the same time not frustrating you Into wanting to quit. Played my 9 in a tidy 45 minutes and was on my way home. Will be going back a lot more.

excellent half course for beginners and kids. lessons are offered here as well. it gets really packed on the weekends, especially with good weather. i saw about 10 people waiting for tee times at the 1^st hole this weekend.
great lighting for night time golf, watch out for stray balls. there are a lot of beginners (including myself) and some holes are literally right next to each other. beginners tend to forget to yell fore… or look for a ball in the air when someone else yells it. i know from first hand experience :). sorry!

Great 9-​hole for beginners, the hungover, and those who just want a short game. Every hole is par 3, and the course is well-​kept. The usual crowd is laid-​back, unpretentious (c’mon you know they get pretty snobby…). Equipped with a full bar with fair prices and a driving range with copious stalls.
There are no bathroom facilities along the course route, I recommend doing your business before you start.

Mariners is a great starter spot for a quick nine hole.
People seem to be pretty laid back, so I haven’t felt the need to rush when I’m in the rough or behind the the netting searching for my lost golf ball. I tend to come out with more balls afterwards… score!

Golf Range: My buddy and I checked out this spot a few weeks ago and we were surprisingly impressed! The range is awesome (double decker) and the overall condition of the golf range is very good! My buddy and I had a great time using the various targets for target practice. The view of the San Mateo Bridge and the bay in the background is pretty awesome!
Bar: The bar is a bit small but pretty good. Good beer selection but no kitchen except for nachos, hot dogs, etc. Bummer! Other than that, the bar was cool and the service was fine.
Pro shop: A bit small with not a whole lot to offer except for the bare necessities for golf.
Overall I enjoyed Mariners Point and can’t wait to go back!
