Roberts Performance Marine

I have been going to Roberts Preformance Marine for several years and have friends that have been going to him for longer. He is about the most honest mechanic you can find in the area. I have shopped around and his prices are fair and he actually does the work himself. Most places have burn out drug addicts doing the work. I have stopped in many times for parts or questions. Robert is always ready to help. He is mostly a one man show so it may take a little longer for service. But you can count on it being done correctly which always takes time. But I’d rather have it done correctly than fast and shoddy.

Just moving to Fox Lake and this place only being 1 block from where I moved to, the whole «Profomance» seemed like a good place. Originally told me the work could be done in about a week for less than $ 500 (I really wasn’t sure what was wrong with it other than it wouldn’t start). After a week I went there and he told me he hadn’t even looked at it yet that he would get to it before the weekend. I said please do, I have family coming for memorial weekend I’d like to take in the boat. To keep a long story short many bs things were said to me about the more things it needed but kept promising me and my kids it woul be done. Anyway, after 4 months (the whole boating season) of him (Robert) having my boat it was finally done. Told me he rebuilt the motor for me and that the new prop a gave him was wrong so he put a new and better one (correct one so he says) on for no extra charge. Well the charge of rebuilding the engine and labor came to almost $ 3000. First day out on the boat I had alot of vibration. I called him from the lake and got VM. 2 more times that week I left messages with no return call. Still none 7 months later. Now I can turn a wrench and if had known I needed a new engine I could have gotten a brand new refurbished delivered to my door for 1800 and done the work myself in 2 weeks. Needless to say beginning of this boating season (2015) I decided to take my boat to a real mechanic (KM Round Lake Beach) where first thing he noticed with boat not even in the water was the vibration I was getting was do to wrong prop so I had to go buy another new one. Same one I had given Robert in the first place. 2^nd he told me that the only visible new part he can see was the starter and that even the engine drain plugs (which were on my receipt for being replaced) were dry rotted. He told me that the guy (Robert) might have bored the engine and replaced rings and pistons which those, the starter and labor he wouldn’t have even charged me $ 1000 to do and with sending block to machine shop would have gotten me my boat back in No Longer than a month but most likely 3 weeks. Now since living in Fox Lake for a year I have spoken with several people who have also had bad experiences at Roberts and said they wish they would have known I was taking it there so they could have told me not to.
