The Sage School

Sage is a school specializing in gifted education. This is only our second year (2013 – 2015). Overall, we’re extremely happy with Sage and look forward to our third year!
Pros:
1. High quality progressive teaching, strong and supportive administrative leadership, and friendly, helpful staff. Loved the teachers our daughter has had so far. Dedicated and passionate teachers who go out of their way to support each child.
2. Impressed and inspired by dedicated parents and faculty members who selflessly volunteer for and support the school or help other families in need.
3. Small teacher-​student ratio of 1:10 maximum.
4. Intimate and nurturing environment. Teeny, tiny school. This is more comfortable to me than large schools.
5. The weekly newsletter is encouraging and comforting for the parents.
6. Intense academic curriculum and co-​curricular activities keep students from getting bored.
7. Positive relationships between students, regardless of what teachers or other parents may think/​report. Kids will be kids. The students seem less competitive with each other than their parents are with other families.
8. Culturally diverse.
9. Like-​minded parents w/​high standards for their kids when it comes to education and hard work.
10. There’s a wide variety of personalities, skills, talents, and interests among students.
11. There are people here who seem relatively down-​to-​earth, reliable, sincere, authentic, respectful, thoughtful, and well-​mannered. I value these people in life.
12. You’ll find many remarkably sweet and exceptional people, big and little.
13. Recently blown away by the passionate 3^rd grade math teacher during a class preview. His modern and progressive teaching method is just phenomenal.
14. I love how faculty members greet and help the kids in/​out of the car during drop off and pick up.
15. Variety of co-​curricular educators music, art, PE, Spanish, library, Latin.
16. Enjoyed International Night, esp. the food potluck! Other events, including Field Day and Art & Literature were a blast.
17. Always evolving and progressing. Teachers and administrators are constantly trying to make improvements, which I hope to witness this coming school year with the recent changes they’ve made.
18. New Spanish teacher using the VAK (Visual, Audio, and Kinesiology) method, which is highly effective for learning.
19. New school counselor with great ideas to provide emotional support.
20. I highly recommend Girl/​Boy Scouts for additional developmental, social, emotional support. They provide positive reinforcement (badges, patches, trophies) for every positive effort they make in the community. Builds confidence, morale, compassion, and character. Our troop meets weekly.
Cons:
1. Private school tuition is very HIGH. Puts a financial burden on working people, many of whom are «gifted» (educators, researchers, scientists, engineers, journalists, etc.). Puts some people on edge or makes others feel resentful, which is understandable.
2. There will always be someone who won’t like you for whatever reason. Human nature, maybe? It’s impossible to find a place without it. Just search for positive and supportive people.
3. Long commute for those who live out of town. Traffic issues. Affects group activity (like play dates, birthday parties) planning.

5. Gossip is inevitable. Sometimes miscommunication occurs during conversations, but the staff is very approachable. Parents are welcomed to contact the teachers and administrators for any concerns. I highly recommend keeping close contact with the school and volunteering as much as you can.
6. Competitiveness among parents. Sometimes they push their kids to compete with and compare them to their peers. Some fail to realize that each child is unique and has different strengths, weaknesses, and interests.

The Sage School is a wonderful place to send your child! Sage is a private Pre-​K through 8^th school for gifted kids. Kids who love learning, who are hard working and motivated, and who think creatively or «outside the box» are the kids that you’ll find here.
The teachers are some of the best I’ve seen — high level degrees, passionate, energetic, and who pour their heart and soul into their students. Sage is a school that any kid would be lucky to go to.
The school has a 1 – 1 technology program so your child will have an iPad or Chrome Book to enrich their learning. Not only is the curriculum challenging enough for even the brightest child, it is diverse and multi-​faceted enough for the Renaissance child! Specials such as Creative Movement, Art, Music, Spanish, Library, Latin, and Gym (to name a few) are offered during school hours. After school activities include: chess club, soccer, clay animation, scrabble club, Model UN, karate, math club, performing arts club, and many more!
Sage is small enough so your child gets the attention they deserve, and will truly feel loved and known by the entire staff. Especially when the school meets for the All School Morning Meeting every Friday. However, it is big enough that your child will meet lots of new friends with diverse interests, abilities, cultures, and backgrounds from all over Rhode Island and Massachusetts!
