Description

History

Established in 1948.

The History of Olson’s Ace Hardware: Olson’s Ace Hardware was founded by John Killinger on May 8, 1948. Killinger’s original store was located at the Northeast corner of Grand Avenue and Gustave Street. The store was one of the first retail stores on Grand Avenue in Franklin Park. In 1960, the 3600 sq. ft. store was increased to 12,000 sq. ft. and included additional storage facilities in the basement making it one of the largest retail establishments at that time. In 1970 John Killinger sold the business to his daughter and son-in-law, Donald and Joan Olson (former Joan Killinger). The Olson’s relocated to the current location at 10 135 W Grand Avenue in March of 1976 which consisted of 32,000 sq. ft., making it on the of largest Ace Hardware stores in the nation at the time. In the meantime Dan Olson, Don and Joan’s son, worked in the store through high school and then attended college at SMU. After graduation, Dan joined the family business and today is the President of the company.
