I have to say that when I was a student at UMW, I really enjoyed this place. They have a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, soups, and quiches. If you don’t find the sandwich of your dreams on the menu, you can create your own. It was also a cheap place for a student to grab a bite off campus. One of my favorite things was the focaccia roll as a bread option for the perfect sandwich. I was disappointed on a recent visit to Old Town that they no longer have these delicious rolls. My back-up option was a croissant. While this was on the menu, they said they had run out.(They were also out of soup and quiches!) I had to settle for sourdough bread. I wasn’t that impressed with the sandwich after all that. This was only my first disappointment on the trip though. There were 2 girls working on the Sunday afternoon I visited. One was running back and forth to the counter to make sandwiches while also spending quality time with whom I assumed was her boyfriend seated at a nearby table. The other girl had her cell phone and was receiving/sending texts non-stop. And her phone was not on silent or vibrate. It was rather annoying. As a manager in retail sales, my employees know better than that! Disappointment #2. I was visiting the deli at maybe about 1pm. I was rather surprised that at 1:30pm the girls began closing the place down for the day. I overheard one employee tell another customer that they’re technically supposed to be open until 3pm, but on slow days, they can close whenever they want. I don’t really concur that that’s a sound business practice. Disappointment #3. While their sandwiches used to be something that I crave, I think I’ll pass from now on. With all the other restaurants springing up in Fredericksburg, I’ll choose a place whose menu I can rely on, has better service, and actually keeps the business hours they post on their door.

«Damn it! Why is the line always so long at this place???» My lord are their sandwiches great!!! That is why the line is so long! The«Rachel» was my favorite sandwich there and I still regularly get cravings for them. They have a huge list of sandwiches that you can order, with more toppings and sauces than you can even think of. I remember the dill sauce being delicious. The sandwiches are not very big so if you are hungry be sure to get two of them.

Wine and Cheese must be one of the best known downtown Fredericksburg lunch spots for locals and to some extent tourists alike– it’s always packed! While Wine and Cheese doesn’t do anything amazing, what it does do, it does with consistancy and a bit of panache– SImple but high quality ingredients and combinations excite the tongue, while maintaining a high level of comfort in their simplicity. I had heard that in the past few years service had gone down hill a bit with the new ownership and that the olde towne deli wasn’t what it once was. This may to some extent be true, but the bottom line is the product is essentially unchanged with the exception of the exclusion of wine and beer being served as a staple… The drafts are gone… That said, you’ve been coming here for the solid but simple sandwichs that fill you up, but don’t weigh you down. Whether its the ollie, or hot holly, you know you’re going to get a quick sandwich that’s well put together with top notch ingredients, and usually an ingredient twist that you wouldn’t or couldn’t come up with on your own. Expect to pay around 8 – 9 bucks for a sandwich and a drink, and wait in line with the lunch crowd that is dominated by local business workers and owers that keep coming back again and again.
