Siobhan Calhoun, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

I wish could give negative infinity rating for this horrible doctor through our interaction I realized that she is not just a horrible doctor but a horrible person who has no qualms in playing with the fears of new parents and hitting them when they are at the most vulnerable moment! It is important that all parents should know about her! Dr. Calhoun, if you are reading this review, I just hope you get well soon, you definitely need medication to get over your mental instability!
Let me give a detail account of my wife’s D-​day interaction with her. This is our first baby and my wife delivered a healthy 8 pounder baby at 39W1D at washington hospital at the end of 24 hours of hard labor.
My wife’s water broke at roughly 3:30 Am in the morning and to confirm if indeed the water is broken we went to the washington hospital at around 6:30 AM. The nurse confirmed that the water is broken and the cervix measured at around 1.5 CM. As it was so early stage in the labor and we just stayed 10 min away from the hospital, we thought of laboring at home for a while and come back when the contractions are little more prominent. When we informed this to the on call doctor who was Dr. Calhoun, she in a very rude and condescending demeanor said that we will have to sign a waiver that Hospital is not responsible if there is a «Dead Baby»! Signing a waiver is fine but the manner in which she communicated by using the dead baby reference seemed a little odd to me at that time. This was the first in many instances where this devil freely used the «Dead Baby» reference! We in a very polite manner signed the waiver and left the hospital. Asking to labor at home initially was not something that was OUT of ordinary or something that we thought out of whim, books and experience doctors have recommended laboring at home as much as you can!
At 11:30 when my wife started having more stronger contractions we came back to the hospital and checked in! At that point we had our second encounter with Dr. Calhoun! The nurse measured the cervix and it was at 3 CM, so we mentioned that we don’t want continuous fetal monitoring so that my wife can move around freely rather than being bed ridden! Again this was completely fair request and something that has proven to help with the labor, on hearing this Dr. Calhoul rudely replied «You should go back home and have a home delivery if you don’t want us to do anything! We cannot help you if you dont need our help». I tried to resolve this issue by pointing out that we all are on the same team and we want to have a safe, stress free labor. But her next reply was even more shocking, she said «We started on a wrong foot the moment you left the hospital this morning!» Then I realize that she had taken it personally. I never had imagined a Doctor who are considered to be life savers to be this harsh and this rude! I knew that there was no point arguing and fighting with a doctor that would be delivering our baby! For the next 10 hours as the labor progressed slowly we never interacted with Dr. Calhoun and that was the best thing that happened!
The third interaction was the worst, my wife after laboring for 12 hours took epidural and was having a much needed rest before the intense pushing phase. She needed this rest to regain her composure and strength but Dr. Calhoun suggested for starting the pushing phase! My wife was completely tired and in no state to push as she was completely drowsy and the fetal monitoring showed no imminent risk to the baby and the baby heart rate was completely normal! And again she in her most condescending way said «We are trying to make sure that you don’t have a dead baby!». Thats where I lost my composure and told her that she has not right to talk about my baby in such a manner and that no doctor in their sane state would ever be so rude and devilish! It seemed like she had no empathy or no sense of
I spoke to the management about not wanting this devil around my wife and we don’t feel that our baby is safe!
If you reading this review and trying to decide on a OBGYN or already selected her, please take my advice and find someone who is a little more humane coz thats the least a woman delivering a baby expects!

I had my first visit with Dr. Calhoun today. She was absolutely wonderful! I felt her genuine sincere care about my situation. More importantly, i didn’t feel rushed. She listened to all my concerns and addressed them professionally and in a manner that I understood exactly what she was explaining. I would highly recommend Dr. Calhoun as an OB/​GYN doctor!

Dr. Prasad is is my normal Obgyn but she wasn’t in the office on a date that I was to come in so I had the pleasure in seeing Dr. Calhoun. Dr. Calhoun was super nice and very easy going. She took time in answering all my questions and overall had such a calm demeanor. I’d be more than happy to see Dr. Calhoun again if my regular Obgyn is unavailable. She’s a true gem!

Dr Calhoun was my OBGYN when I had my first kid this year. I checked the reviews on Unilocal before choosing her as my doctor. I must say I am very happy with the choice I made. Dr Calhoun is calm, attentive and very patient. She listens well and does not rush through the appointment. She is also on time for the appointment and you don’t have to wait very long.
I have noticed that she is very easy going and does not alarm you unnecessarily.
The only thing I thought was unrealistic was during my pregnancy I was advised to gain only 20 pounds but everywhere I read you gain between 25– 30 pounds (I was at normal weight before pregnancy). I ended up gaining 28 pounds eventually.

Dr. Calhoun has been a part of our lives for the past 3 years now. I think we’re done having kids, but I am happy that she has been a huge help in reassuring and answering all of our questions through the pre and post labor/​pregnancy. My wife (the patient) loves her, and I’ve sat in on many appointments and she is simply a genuine person that cares about her patients. It also helps that my wife is in the health field so there’s less explaining to do, but regardless, she always took her time with us, chit chatted with our toddler, and made us feel valued as her patient. Not once have we felt rushed or uneasy with her recommendations.
Although she was not «ON» (working) during the time of labor, she did check up on us, even phone calls to my wife’s cell phone on a couple of occasions. Thank you Dr. Calhoun for all that you’ve done and do.

I think shes the best doctor in the group. i have seen the others and she seems to be the only one who gives the patient enough time and explains things. shes nice and friendly.

Went for a first OB appointment at 6 weeks. I met Dr. Wong and she seemed really nice. She looked at my medical records saw that I have had 3 vaginal births, 1 loss, 1 c-​esection, and 1 vabc (15 months prior) She immediately declared I «have to» have a c-​section. I explained I already had a vbac and wouldn’t CHOOSE a c-​section. We go back and forth for a minute before I mention that I’m only 6 weeks and we can discuss this later.
Dr. Wong decided to do an unexpected ultrasound. I was glad I’d get a peek at baby! She pointed out the heartbeat and told me it was too slow. I was a little confused because I’ve had several children and it looked perfect to me. She didn’t even measure the heartbeat… just kept saying it was «too slow».
She removed the probe, gave me a pamplet on miscarriage and told me to schedule a follow up appintment in two weeks or to come in sooner if I had miscarried before then.
I left and called another OB who sent me for a dianostic ultrasound the next day. Everything was fine. Baby’s heartrate was 160. Not slow at all.
All that upset was for NOTHING.
I was crying, my husband was upset, I hadn’t ate or slept.
Imagine if I had waited two weeks!
I’m not sure what Dr. Wong saw that indicated to her that she should declare an impending miscarriage… but the other tech saw NOTHING of the sort. I have since had all my blood work, and 3 more ultrasounds, and I’m now in my second trimester. All signs point to a perfectly healthy baby. I have yet to recieve any type of acknowlegement or apology for the upset she caused.
So my next visit I’m seen by Dr. Kurkjian (8 weeks).
She confirms that baby’s heartbeat seems normal but that their machine actually doesn’t even measure the heartbeat! Strange but okay. I was just happy to see my baby and have a doc say everything was ok. Then Dr. Kurkjian starts in on the C-​section pressure. I’m a perfectly healthy woman, with a normal healthy fetus, no clinical indications for a c-​section AT ALL. Dr. Kurkjian was like a c-​section nazi. This woman would NOT let up. I mention that I am only 8 weeks, she didn’t stop. I mention that they are my local OB’s, but I may switch later, she doesn’t stop. I mention that the ACOG states that a woman should be alowed a trial of labor, and that my previos history of 3 vaginal birth, 1 low transverse c-​section, a VBAC, and almost 2 year between births should be PERFECT for another VBAC. This just ticked her off. She tells me no VBAC is safe. I counter that statistics show VBAC is in fact SAFER than a repeat c-​section. This only infuriates her further. At this point she is almost yelling as I just look at the floor wanting to leave. She tells me if I refuse a c-​section, she will make sure that none of the doctors in this practice see me. She was very angry. I don’t think I have ever seen a doctor so angry. Definatly would not want her near me in labor, or around my newborn. I scheduled my next appointment and mentioned to the front desk that I don’t ever want to see her again. The woman at the front desk just winked and said «I know what you mean.»
Next visit I was 13 weeks. I met Dr Calhoun. Much better than her partners. Calm, let me ask questions, and explained that that practice does not do VBACs. Washington Hospital does not «allow» VBACs. I could show up and it be «too late (baby falling out) …or flat out refuse a c-​section last minute… but I’d be better off delivering elsewhere.
Quite an issue for me as my 3 shortest labors were 20 minutes, 41 minutes, and 1 hour. But at least she wasn’t rude or yelling at me like Dr. Kurkjian.
At 15 weeks I called about a yeast infection. I’m allergic to Monistat. She said to take Lotrimin, which later the pharmacist said to NOT take because it is the same drug family and if you are allergic to Monistat, you’d be allergic to Lotrimin most of the time. So I was a little worried she didn’t think of that… but over all ok.
My next visit with her will be my last, I may even cancel, not sure yet. I’m switching to a midwife.
I would highly encourage this practice to:
1 — do not carelessly tell women their babies are dying.
2 — Just fire Dr. Kurkjian, she’s beyond help
3 — Deliver VBACs and pressure Washington Hospital to change their «policy» since it is NOT in the best interest of women or babies.
Remember — First, Do no harm.
By denying women the right to birth, you are in fact harming them, and their babies.

I love Dr. Calhoun and the people in her office. She was my OB for two of my pregnancies and has always been caring, kind, competent and thorough. She is the only reason I stay with Hill Physicians Medical Group — the thought of losing her as my OB/​Gyn makes me very sad. I have recommended her to family and have had a couple of friends be with her as well. Can’t recommend her highly enough. It’s important to have someone you trust implicitly with your reproductive health and the health of your unborn child, and she fits the bill here, no question.
She is part of Women’s Health Specialists, so yes, you may get another doctor when you deliver your baby or need to see someone else urgently and she is otherwise booked. I’ve had good experiences with all of the other doctors on staff there as well. Great practice.
