Uncle Harry’s New York Bagelry & Coffehouse

Let me start off saying that I LOVE Uncle Harry’s bagels and other food items. They are the best in town, and their number of successful stores and busy weekends proves it. The bagels have chewy exteriors, and the perfect interior textures. The flavors-​gingerbread, egg, blueberry, cinnamon raisin, etc are outstanding. The only foods I don’t enjoy are the breakfast sandwiches. The eggs are flavorless and taste like they were microwaved poorly (yes that’s a thing).
That being said, I have two serious issues that knock down my review by two stars. First: the specialty bagels, which cost $ 0.40 more each, include such normal bagels as chocolate chip and blueberry. Unless there is a fancy cheese or other topping on the bagel, I stand by my argument that they should not be classified as «special» but rather normal bagels. Second, this particular store almost seems to go out of its way to provide you with individualized service contrary to specific requests/​instructions. Today, I ordered a gingerbread bagel sliced in half. The cashier asked me how I wanted it cut in half. I said the normal way and indicated I wanted the bagel cut the long way creating two circle halves. She mentioned this bagel had cream cheese and looked at me funny. I said I know but cutting that way makes it easier to evenly spread cream cheese. I also ordered an ultimate breakfast sandwich on a garlic bagel. I asked if they could toast the bagel (which I later learned is supposed to be the norm). The cashier said of course.
Fast forward to home, and my gingerbread bagel is cut in half making two half circles instead of two circles where the cream cheese could be spread. And my husband’s sandwich was as soggy and not burned as if they took it straight from the rack and threw it together without ever attempting to toast.
The problem here is not only did they completely disregard my normal request to have a bagel toasted, but they asked me specifically how I wanted my bagel cut. When they didn’t like my response (why ask if it is an issue), they appeared to try to talk me out of my choice and then disregarded my response-​doing exactly the opposite.
What is the point of letting a customer make decisions if you are just going to delete my request?
I have asked around and apparently, this conduct is nothing new at this SPECIFIC location. Therefore, even though the food is great, I’m not giving my money to anyone who wastes my time asking for customizations that they proceed to blatantly disregard.

Umm hello best bagel shop! My sister-​in-​law recommended this place one morning while we were up visiting them in Fresno. We went two days in a row ! They have so many great selections for bagels with speciality bagel options and samples for you to try. They also have many different cream cheese options. Personally I loved the blueberry! Not into bagels? They also have a breakfast line up that has great deals/​prices. If your looking to be a cheap date or come with a group of people the menu is a la carte and you order at the register then sit down. The café is cute with both comfy chair sitting area and normal low top seating. Come here you won’t be disappointed. Fresh Bagels are definitely my weak point! I recommend the French Toast special bagel when it comes around! I didn’t even need to toast it it was so good!

Wonderful place to stop on my business trip. I recommend ordering one of their sandwiches in a toasted bagel (delicious!) and the scones and sweet bagels (sold by the dozen and half dozen too) are all so wonderful. The women working there were so friendly and caring, if I’m ever back in town I’ll gladly come again!

Normally I love this place. However, when I went in today I ordered an ultimate sandwich on a plain bagel and a toasted cinnamon raisin with cream cheese. They swapped them and instead of offering to remake my order, I had to pull the sandwich apart and move it to the correct bagel. When I told them they made the sandwich on the wrong bagel, they got upset with me as if it was my fault. It was very frustrating and not the kind of customer service I’ve received from them before. If this continues to happen, I will not be going here anymore.

I love this place! I travel throughout CA and drink coffee from a lot of coffee places, but I love the double mochas and bagel breakfasts. Staff is very friendly and they call you by your first name when you are a regular:)
However, about 9 months ago I had to talk to the manager about someone using the e-​cigarettes/​vaping. The manager apologized and addressed it right away. Another reason why I love the staff, they’re very responsive and want their customers to be happy.

Oddly enough, I recently heard about Uncle Harry’s in the comments of a bagel article. The article was about how difficult it is to find a real or close variation of a New York bagel on the west coast. I hardly expected to see Fresno, CA mentioned. Apparently, people in the area know it definitely deserves a nod in the great bagel debate. There are three locations so it’s an established chain in the small city.
Being on the late train that morning, I wasn’t sure what to expect at nearly 11:00 am on a Sunday morning. I appreciated the decently stocked selection. A dozen bagels seemed sufficient to get my bagel tasting in. When I saw the empty tray marked pesto provolone, I asked if there were any left. Sure enough a batch had just come out so they went back and grabbed a freshly made, warm bagel, and added it to my bag of goodies. I left with 13 bagels and two pints of cream cheese (light plain & spinach). Four of the special menu items were at the higher price of $ 0.40 each (Pesto-​Prov, Choc-​Chip, Maple French T). The Maple French Toast hit the spot with it’s buttery cinnamon outside. Every soft, chewy maple flavored bite felt like a perfect helping of French toast minus the utensils. The most expensive of them all was the Bacon Cheddar at $ 0.99. It had two strips of bacon on top of the bagel with the cheddar cooked right into the top. It’s what bacon dreams are made of! Total bill was $ 18 and worth it.
The bagels were awesome. I probably wouldn’t go so far to say they were unlike anything I’ve ever consumed, bagelwise, but they were certainly in the top 2. For Fresno, this is as good as it gets. I live in the bay area and wish I had something as good in my area. I’d have to trek up to the City at the crack of dawn if I want a real bagel. Without a doubt, Uncle Harry’s is a must for me when in town. If you love bagels stop in and taste for yourself. They even offer a $ 1 discount if you return the same day for lunch. Not sure if Betty’s is different in terms of what ingredients are being used for the sandwiches.

I have not eaten here just wanted to add a review on the customer service of the person who I spoke with on the phone. I called on a Saturday afternoon asking what time they open on Sundays. First of all, when I called the woman who answered was SO UNPROFESSIONAL. All she said was, «Hello?» not «Hi, this is Harry’s Bagels.» At first I wasn’t sure I called the right place. Anyway, I asked what time they opened and she said 5:30am. I come today (Sunday) at 6:20am and they open at 6:30am. WHAT!!! I work at the hospital and my shift starts at 7am. I don’t have time to wait until they open, wait in line (there were several people waiting) and then drive over and bring the bagels in. Based on the reviews the wait time for 1 bagel was too long. Well, too bad for them because I was going to make a large order for my whole department. Now I know I shouldn’t trust their business!

I was extremely disappointed with this place. First off they don’t except 50s or 100s but never mind that. I felt unwelcome and uncomfortable when I was first greeted by unpleasant cashier. She was rude and pushy. Then as we were placing our order the lady getting the bagels gave us the wrong amount of the wrong type of bagel. The worst part was the fact that they did not have a single plain bagel. Can you believe that the bagel shop didn’t have any plain bagels. Also the man in front of us waited over fifteen minutes to get a toasted bagel! I used to really enjoy this place but the lack of good customer service has driven me away. I will not be returning.

Went this morning and had the worst customer service experience ever. I love Uncle Harry’s and I am a frequent customer at the Shaw and Cedar location. I made a mistake of coming to this one and had a horrible experience with Cashier, Vianey. I had to repeat my order three times (she seems annoyed to even be having to take my order) and even then she got my order wrong and did not add vanilla syrup to my coffee cup and literally ROLLED her eyes when I told her she forget (how can you forget when you asked 3 xs for my order and I stated that I wanted syrup) She didn’t apologize for her mistake and was extremely rude with how she handled that situation. Not a friendly experience whatsoever. She is not someone they should have up front helping customers. Instead she should be in the back making the sandwiches so she doesn’t have to display her lack of customer service skills and her «I hate working here attitude». I will not be returning. The two stars was for their food and coffee that I DID enjoy.

I purchase approximately $ 800‑1000 worth of bagels for my office staff annually. Every so often IO send someone with a $ 50. Sometimes they take, sometimes they don’t. So now they won’t have to worry about it: I refuse to purchase there any more. Had they been consistent or even posted a sign rather than being capricious and inconsistent, perhaps. Not a good way to maintain previously loyal customers.

It gets the job done but nothing special. Bagels aren’t real bagels, more like a roll with a hole and they can’t take the time to spread the cream cheese out. Tastes pretty good though.

«I’LL NEVER COME BACK HERE!» I told the clerk, after I asked him for the 3^rd time if my plain bagel with shmeer was ready… AFTER 30 mins! I placed my order to go and was very patient. After 15 mins. I asked… Is my order ready?
He looked over his shoulder and told me it would be a few more mins. I asked him, «How long does it take you to toast a bagel and put some cream cheese on it?» Obviously over 30 mins.
After I waited another 15 mins. I went to the register and there I saw my bagel on the counter out in the open — cold by now — and barely toasted, getting cold and not even close to coming to me. What was crazy is that there’s my bagel on his counter while he’s making sandwiches and slopping stuff all over the place while my bagel is laying there like a piece of garbage.
I asked him again— he told me it would be a few more mins. I told him, never mind, keep my money — I won’t be back. This was after 30 mintues has passed.
It really chaps my hide when I pay for an over-​priced bagel which I never get to eat. What pisses me off even more is that they had this attitude like I should be happy to wait half an hour for a toasted bagel with cheese. Who hell do they think they are?
Their bagels aren’t even that good. They are too soft and don’t have that chew and bite that a REAL bagel has. So who do they think they are?
I have them 1 star because I had too. But if I could have they would have gotten a negative –2 star. This place is a black hole as far as I’m concerned and I repeat…“I WILL NEVER, NEVER GO BACK.”

Love this place and I have been coming here for years with friends and family and will continue to go. I no longer live in Fresno and have yet to find a bagel/​coffeehouse in the Denver Metro area even close to Uncle Harrys. I miss it! I come here everytime I come «home» to visit.

Nothing compares to the ultimate breakfast beagle at uncle Harry’s. It comes lightly toasted with butter, sausage, scramble eggs, hash browns, and bacon. It is sure to satisfy your morning hunger. The price is reasonable and the atmosphere is great. The service is always outstanding. I would definately remomend this place for breakfast.

This place has amazing bagels. Prices seem to be fair and they have a large variety to choose from. My wife love their everything bagels while I go for the plain whole wheat for early mornings. During later mornings I go for their bagel wrapped hot dogs. They are pretty addicting.

small complaint. i had the lox and cheese sandwich. i really like salmon but i have to say they actually put way to much on here. most things i want it piled on but with lox there is a correct amount. but besides that little hickup they are great for breakfast and coffee

Love Uncle Harrys! Only complaint is that no matter what kind of cream cheese I get… it has a garlic flavor to it. Please stop using the same utensils for all cream cheese flavors… blueberry cream cheese does not taste good with garlic! Thanks :)

I only really had the bagels when someone from work would bring them in. And I always love them, I honestly don’t know why I never came in.
UGHHHH!!! I’ve been missing out and I’m so upset! These things were yummy, (wheat spinach florentine) they were quick, (pay and ready in 5 minutes) and they were cheap ($ 3). AND they open up at 5:30, I leave to work by 6:20 every morning and the only quick places that’s open is starbucks. I’m in love with you Harry, I’m just sad we didn’t meet sooner.
