History

Established in 1892.

Randolph-Macon Academy was founded in 1892 as an all-boys college-prep boarding school. The original military program, the National Defense Cadet Corps, was added in 1917. For many years, the school had a long, proud heritage of excellence known among both secondary schools and colleges.

The Vietnam and post-Vietnam era brought difficult times to many military schools, and Randolph-Macon Academy was no exception. Enrollment declined sharply, and the Board of Trustees sought to implement several measures expected to halt this downturn:. females were accepted beginning in 1974, and the military program was switched to Air Force JROTC in 1975.

In 1985, the school introduced an in-house flight program, which today includes two Cessna 172s and two flight instructors who are members of the R-MA faculty.

Today, R-MA enjoys a robust enrollment; each year, the graduating classes average a 98% college acceptance rate and over $ 4 million in college scholarships.
