Spectacles Improv Engine

I like to go to their Friday night improv competitions. Two groups compete against each other and have to do different challenges. Audience gets to shout out suggestions and it’s a lot of fun. The teams are different every time and it’s always fresh and new. They also allow you to take your own snacks and drinks in there and there’s a liquor store right next door so that’s fun because you are super comfortable in there. Clean bathroom for customers and tickets are only $ 7. It’s a great way to spend a Friday night.

The improvisers in this community are fabulous, and everyone is supportive and great to each other. The shows and classes are so much fun, and very cheap!
I’ve been to a bunch of the drop-​in classes on Friday at noon, and Josh who usually teaches them, is wonderful. He’s also an owner at Spectacles. He’s welcoming, kind, and extremely knowledgeable.
The shows are awesome too, and as others have said you can bring your own booze and food into the theater!
Everyone and everything I’ve experienced there is great. If you’re considering going to something DO IT! Do it now!

The level of talent is great. Some solid performers in there. Austin Floyd is one of my favorites.
The organization itself is amazing. They raise money for charity, they involve all ages, and all abilities. It draws such a high caliber of person. Many kudos to Josh (the owner of the company)!

I’ve attended several Spectacles shows and drop-​in classes.
The classes (most Fridays 12−2pm & Sundays 330 – 530) are a total bargain at $ 10 a piece. The instructors are very knowledgable and do a great job; each class I walk away having learned something and added more tools to my improv belt. Their set-​up is a refreshing alternative to most improv theaters. Usually you have to front hundreds of dollars for a 6 or 7 week course where you’re locked in for those dates no matter what happens with your schedule. Here, you show up when it works for you and just pay as you go. It’s really convenient and affordable.
The shows are super fun! Each team is a little different but they are all hilarious and talented. Bonus: The theater is BYOB! I’ve gone here on dates, with friends, and even with my mom. Each time has been entertaining and enjoyable. Highly recommend!

I’ve been attending shows here for over 2 years, and this is Orange County’s best kept secret. With the prices of movies being what they are, this is a nice change of pace to get a full night of comedy for $ 7.00. The talent pool here is amazing. My best advice for a good night out. Go grab some dinner in Downtown Fullerton, walk or drive 2 blocks to Stages Theatre and catch a show. You don’t even need to be choosy about which one to see. There isn’t a bad show in the bunch.

Super fun! They have weekly shows. So anytime you’re looking for a cheap date night, improv is always a good choice! They allow you’re own alcohol in the theatre, which is awesome! Lots of fun shows for a great price. You can’t go wrong, highly recommend!

Spectacles puts on some of the best improv comedy shows in Southern California. The drop-​in classes on Fridays and Sundays are the best value in improv training you’ll find: $ ¹⁰⁄₂ hours, and they’re open to all levels from brand new to expert performers. The shows on Fridays and Saturdays do not serve alcohol, but they allow you to bring your own into the theater.

Attended their annual big show, which is a competition between improv groups. My brother in law does improv out of state, so he was anxious to see the level of performing here. He was very impressed; the rest of us were too. We laughed and had a great time. Be sure to stop at the liquor store on the way in and fill up for the show.
My only complaint; it was warm inside. A lot of bodies in the theater. We will definitely be back soon.

My first experience with Spectacles Improv Engine came last fall when they hosted the OC Improv Cup. The room was packed; and the energy in the crowd and the talent on stage blew me away. Since then, I’ve gone to watch the various Spectacles teams play at Stages almost weekly; and all of them have something brilliant to offer. My personal favorite is The Friday Society (they play just about every Friday night at 11:59 p.m.), who I believe is not just, pound-​for-​pound, the best team in the company; but some of the best entertainment you’ll find anywhere in Orange County.
Inspired by watching the folks on stage, I also started taking the improv classes that Spectacles holds every Friday from noon-​3pm. They’re drop-​in classes (no commitment), and only $ 10. Honestly, you’d be hard pressed to get 1 hour of lessons in ANYTHING for $ 10; and here you get three. Not to mention the fact that Spectacles heads Josh Nicols and Matt Thomas are just as good at teaching improv as they are at playing it. I really enjoy the classes (which often includes other Spectacles players such as the charming and brilliant Jac Wandzura), and find a lot of value (as a musician and an actor) in the way that doing improv gets you thinking a bit quicker, a bit sharper, and teaches you how to deliver information in a creative way every time you speak.
Another one of the pluses from the classes is that every couple of months or so they hold shows for the students to play in. You have to have attended a certain number of classes to qualify (around 8, I believe), and I can tell you from experience (I’ve done two so far) that it’s well worth the investments of time, energy, and money. Some of the most fun I’ve ever had has come from being on stage with my classmates. There’s nothing quite like nailing a joke or a line and having a crowd roar in laughter and applause.
Whether you just want to have some laughs or get in the game yourself, I highly recommend anything Spectacles Improv Engine to all.
