Whit’s Frozen Custard

My wife and I relocated to Columbus from Cleveland where we have been spoiled by a myriad of great locally owned ice cream shoppes including the wonderful East Coast Custard. We do find local Columbus ice cream shoppes like Graeter’s and Jeni’s to be good but by comparison much prefer Whit’s for their creamy and delicious custard and creative selection of weekly flavors. The woman who works during the days is so welcoming and we find that most of the young staff in the evenings greet you with a smile and seem to enjoy working at Whits. Terrific custard and good service– a great combination.

Loved the short north version of Whit’s, so I decided to give a shot to the location closer to my home. I’ve been here twice now in the past week and, while the frozen custard creations are still excellent, I’ve yet to experience the eureka feeling I got with my visit to the central location. Don’t get me wrong, Whit’s is STILL my go-​to location for a cool treat. Jeni’s, Graeter’s, DQ, etc. just don’t measure up to them. It’s just, some choices are better than others. Your pallette may disagree.

They have a variety of toppings and are willing to mix them into the custard. I prefer to have my concoctions sundae style so I can enjoy the custard on its on on some bites.
My fav is definitely the specialty item that featured raspberry and hot fudge. Their banana split is also to die for.

If I’d had Whit’s custard before, I don’t remember, so I had to give it a shot. My buddy’s been going to Milwaukee a lot and has become obsessed with frozen custard after trying Kopp’s. We had gone to Culver’s, and it was pretty good, but we wanted to check out this local chain that had originated in Granville.
The Whit’s over in Gahanna is a pretty easy place to get in and out of, and they were were pretty quick with our order, even though the lady in front of me with her kids was ordering as if she’d never seen ice cream or hot dogs before. The guy working the counter didn’t really seem like he wanted to be there, but whatever, I’m just interested in the custard.
I went with the Buckeye custard which had all kinds of peanut butter swirls, Reese’s cups, and other peanut butter flavorings in it, and it was pretty damn good. My buddy had a chocolate custard with M&M’s, and he said it was pretty tasty but not quite as good as those he’d had in Wisconsin.
They offer the vanilla and chocolate all the time, and they usually have one or two flavors of the week that they rotate out and are listed on the website. You can also get hot dogs, pulled pork, and pizzadillas (whatever the hell those are) if you’re looking to actually grab lunch along with your dessert. I haven’t tried those yet, but I may give them a shot at some point. I picture Dairy Queen dogs and pork when I read the menu, so I’m not in any hurry. If you’re looking for some high quality frozen custard in Columbus, Whit’s has to be the primary spot at the moment.

I love frozen custard. Whit’s is the best frozen custard shoppe in Central Ohio. That said, it’s not the best frozen custard shoppe ever – doesn’t even come close. I am a St. Louis girl at heart and while Whit’s is good, it will never be as good as Ted Drews in St. Louis.
Last time I went to Whit’s I had to wait in a very long and VERY SLOW drive thru line. It took at least 45 minutes from the time I entered the line to the time I got my order. When I got my Whister, I was disappointed because about ¾ of the way down it was all vanilla custard. They didn’t mix it all the way through. That was a major bummer. My thing is, if you do one thing – do it well. Whit’s is good, but it doesn’t always do my custom Whister creation well. That said, it is the best custard shoppe central Ohio has to offer and I will back back again soon, but don’t judge custard shoppes on a whole by Whit’s – that’s not fair. It’s just an average custard shoppe.

I love Whit’s frozen custard! The custard is the creamiest custard I have ever had and has always consistently good in texture and flavor. This location is just outside the airport which can sometimes be hard to get to depending on traffic. I like the fact that they have a flavor of the week that rotates regularly and is posted on the company web site. I try to recommend this place to all of my friends!
Note: This place does not have indoor seating but works great for a cool (er) summer night!

I have driven by Whit’s a couple of times but never thought to stop by and try it. Maybe it’s because I was trying to avoid eating too much sugar in my diet.
So today I finally tried it. My sister brought it from here and we had the pumpkin pecan and iced sugar cookie flavors. They are so rich in the custard flavor. It paired really well with the cake we had.
Another great thing is they have a drive thru so if your feeling lazy you can just go through that and pick it up there there. I will have to come back here soon with my husband, at least when the weather is warmer!

How have I lived in Cbus for nearly 10 years and never tried Whit’s?! Clearly I’m an idiot.
I guess I forgot how delicious custard was until Jeni’s recently did a small batch of salty vanilla custard, and I couldn’t get enough. So smooth, so creamy — and really unlike ice cream. And since Jeni’s doesn’t carry custard most of the time, I had to find another place to get my fix. Enter Whit’s…
I went to the Gahanna location since it’s closest to me, but I’ve passed by the other stores too — and they’re all really cute and clean. The Gahanna location has a drive-​through, which would be a big plus now that I’ve been once and know what I’m doing.
But for the first trip, I walked up to the counter so I could taste a few flavors. That particular day, they had sea salt caramel, which totally beckoned me. See, I’m not a Jeni’s salty caramel fan (shh… don’t tell her), but I love the flavor of salted caramel. Whit’s version did not disappoint. It was salty and creamy goodness! I paired it with traditional vanilla, which was also delicious.
The folks working appeared to all be teenagers, so you kinda know what type of service to expect. I hate to stereotype, but in this case — it was true. They were friendly enough, but the five of them (Five employees! Working on a Monday night!) definitely seemed more interested in gossiping with each other than helping customers. But whatever… they were fine.
Whit’s has two rotating flavors each week, and they always have vanilla and chocolate. And if you’re craving a past week’s flavor, check out their freezer to see if it’s still around.
If you haven’t had Whit’s, you should totally give them a chance, but prepare yourself — it’s not ice cream… it’s custard. That means there are eggs in the mix and it will freeze at a slightly higher temperature than ice cream.

Frozen custard is something that really is different — it’s not ice cream, it’s not soft serve. There’s a richness and a texture that’s truly unique, and Whit’s does it really well.
The rotating flavors, the mix ins, the big ‘patio’ and drive-​thru — it takes me back to being younger and visiting little mom and pop custard stands in Northeast Ohio when I visited my grandparents over the summer, and I really can’t put a price on that kind of nostalgia.

Y family and I came to Columbus this weekend for COSI and stopped by Whits for dessert. Seriously, this was the best sundae I have had in my life thus far. I got the Hawaiian, which had the creamy frozen custard topped with banana, whole macadamia nuts, pineapple and coconut. They do not skimp on portions here, and the staff were friendly. My partner got the brownie sundae which was giant and rich, and our son lived his kiddie scoop of chocolate custard. We will definitely visit again when we return to Columbus.

If you’re looking for a different place for sweet treats, Whit’s can offer you a variety of custards to take home. Each week, they announce the flavor of the week. I recommend the salty carmel and strawberry short cake. They also serve fast food but that menu is limited… and that’s ok. I mainly go for the creamy goodness. Prices are good and they have outdoor seating. It’s definitely one of my favorite places.

Absolutely LOVE this place! I was a total Graeter’s girl until my very first visit here. I really love my ice cream and I love trying new places since you really never know what jewel you’re going to find. This place is what I’ve been looking for!
They have a ‘flavor or the week’ (usually there’s two) and they’re also available in the freezer section located outside the main window until everything is sold out. So if you miss one that you really wanted to try make sure you check that freezer! I was really upset over missing their almond joy this past fall but I was able to try it since they had some over a month later still in the freezer. They have a list on their website too which is set up like a calendar so you can figure out which day to go in advance. Other then there flavor of the week they also sell vanilla and chocolate all the time and, of course, all the toppings you could ever want! They also have hot food items like grilled cheese & fries, and then things like milkshakes and sundaes. I don’t get ice cream too often, so when I do I usually just stick to the flavor of the week. I love their imagination with this and how well they pull it off every single time. Apple pie was fantastic! Vanilla ice cream with chunks of apple and swirled with cinnamon and pie pieces… it tasted exactly like apple pie and it worked so well, even for me who doesn’t care for apple pie, that I went back for it later that week! I love this place. My only regret is that they don’t stay open in the winter months. I’ll be camping out for they open in the spring! Haha And it doesn’t cost an arm & leg like other places (*cough* Cold Stone)
A plus: they sell mini ice cream cones for your dog. $.50 for a mini cone w/​vanilla custard. I never knew until one day the woman who works the drive through mentioned it to us since we always bring out dog with us. She was in heaven. We had to stop taking her with us after that since she would try and take ours as soon as the girls would pass it through the window. Opps! If your dog has allergies to dairy I would pass this up since it’s not ‘dog formulated’ custard. Our pup didn’t mind.

Never had this stuff before… wish I’d never tried it! OH MY! Awesome! Had the iced sugar cookie custard and have been dreaming about it ever since!
In addition, I was SO lost and asked the cashier for directions. She was wonderful. She took the time to write down the streets, turn-​by-​turn, and also let me know to drive 25 mph or risk a ticket on the road I was heading toward. Funniest thing: I looked in my rear-​view mirror to see police lights. Fortunately, the officer sped around me to snag the guy who passed me going… idk…35!
Thanks, Whit’s, for everything… except the frozen custard addiction and necessity for custard rehab. ;-)

This was my first time here & it definitely lived up to the hype. The flavors offered were chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, & mud pie. My hubby & I both chose the mud pie after learning it was espresso with caramel & Oreo. It was super creamy but not too sweet & the price is reasonable. We picked up a quart for our neighbor & it was only $ 6! We’ll definitely be back!

Whit’s is a nice local ice cream, or should I say, custard place. The custard is usually close to perfect — thick, creamy, and ice cold. Whit’s offers three flavors of custard — vanilla, chocolate, and then a changing special. However, this does not mean there are not many options. You can specialize your sundae, shake, or Whitser (aka Blizzard) as much as you like.
As far as Whitsers go, I would rather just get a sundae. I have gotten mixed results with Whitsers. The custard doesn’t seem to retain its creaminess when it is mixed all together with other ingredients.
That said, Whit’s is a solid choice if you want to some ice cream … err, custard.

Friendly staff. Good ice cream. Great prices. Unique flavors of the week, which change weekly. Favorites range from GS Thin Mint to Cookie Monster. Try them out. Quarts are cheap to buy, but hard to scoop! Great prices.

If you want some classic ice cream, Whit’s is the place to go!
Their custard is so wonderfully creamy and it just makes me happy when I eat it! They always have chocolate and vanilla and then one flavor of the week as well as lots of toppings to choose from. Additionally, pints in many different flavors are available for take home.
It’s good for them (bad for me) that they are soooo close to my work! A definite must-​try!

If Jeni’s is my happy place, Whit’s is my close to home guilty pleasure happy place.
The custard is amazingly creamy and delicious. They have the standard vanilla and chocolate, then each week there’s a magical new flavor of the week. (The week they had Almond Joy was an incredible week. Oh goodness. Toasted coconut custard with chocolate and almonds.)
But don’t think just because there are only three flavors available that your options are slim. They have a long list of sundae toppings and you can make your own sundae or choose from their list of pre-​imagined concoctions available in standard sundae form or as a «Whitser» (read: Blizzard). I’d do the math and tell you how many possible combinations there are, but my TI-​82 is out of batteries.
My newest discovery is a single scoop chocolate custard sundae topped with hot caramel sauce and almonds. Mmm mmm good.
Bottom line is, Whit’s is some solidly good eats. (They have savory food, too, but City BBQ is right across the street — I mean, come on.)

I neglected to holla ‘we want pre-​nup’, ya know. But it turns out you’re something I need to have AND she’s something I need to have. But when I leave you each, I leave with half (of my daily calorie intake).
In all seriousness, this is some damn tasty goo. It’s a little shop like an old DQ from my youth — service counter with a couple tables out front and a big illuminated sign out front that advertises the flavor of the week. So it’s good a good nostalgia factor of post-​soccer dessert stops from my youth.
Not only will I not try to compare my two favorite dessert stops in town (Jeni’s and Whit’s), I will say that they are truly 100% completely different — ice cream vs custard, crafty/​unique flavors vs traditional awesome classic flavors, even more of an urban vs suburban kind of slant to the whole business.
You can get your custard scooped into a dish or cone (sugar or waffle), or they offer various sundaes and what they refer to as «Whisers» (psssttt…it’s a Blizzard), custard with mix-​in ingredients. The Gahanna Turtle Whitser is pretty fantastic.
They serve burgers, fries, dogs, and a couple other hot offerings, but I’m not sure why — they have frozen custard here. Seriously. What more do you need?
