Abel graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M at Galveston with a Bachelor of Science in Maritime Systems Engineering. He earned his Juris Doctorate from St. Mary’s University School of Law, where he served as an Editor of The Scholar and Dean for the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. He is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, Houston Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, Galveston County Bar Association, Houston Bar Association, State Bar of Texas Bankruptcy Law Section, State Bar of Texas Business Law Section, State Bar of Texas Construction Law Section, State Bar of Texas Oil, Gas, and Energy Resources Law Section, State Bar of Texas Real Estate, Probate, and Trust Law Section, The Texas Young Lawyers Association and the Knights of Momus and serves as a founding executive board member of the Galveston Chamber of Commerce’s C-​Crewe and the Out of the Box Committee.
