History

Established in 2004.

Following great success as a restaurant chef, Zachary Pope wanted his own business, utilizing everything he loved about food preparation while making time for his growing family. He and wife Jennifer welcomed sons Patrick in 2002 and Cameron in 2005. In that time frame, Roundz Catering was born.

After years of catering to the MD-​DC-​VA region, Chef Pope acted on his dream and opened Roundz Gourmet Market in 2011, establishing a gourmet eatery to serve the community and act as the hub of his thriving catering business.

While studying pre-​med at Baylor University, Zachary took a job as a waiter and was soon drawn to the kitchen. His epiphany came in his third year of college, when a conversation with his brother led to the simple question: «What do you like to do?» Within weeks of this discussion, he enrolled in the Baltimore International Culinary College.

Chef Pope excelled in his studies at BICC and was awarded a seven-​month fellowship at the Park Hotel, Ireland’s premier country resort famous for its classic cuisine. Upon his return to the states, he worked at: Matters of Taste catering in Old Town Alexandria, VA.; Scirocco in Annapolis. In Washington, DC, Restaurant Vidalia, Georgetown Station, Brigadoon, Vintage Wine Bistro (with Gerard Pangaud of Gerard’s Place), Red Sage, Tahoga, Butterfield 9, and Ortanique.

Chef Pope started Roundz Catering in 2004 and opened Roundz Gourmet Market in 2011

Gross gross and gross again… I went there in August for the first and last time the glass dessert cabinet had about 5 flys flying around and landing on the food. No way would I eat anything from there!!!

I am not sold on this place. I stopped by on a late afternoon, starving and willing to indulge. It was one of those times that, the people behind the counter stood there and staired at me, as if I did not belong. I asked for sugesstions and was left with the feeling that I was obviosly imposing on their busy work. At any rate I purchased overpriced eggplant, a side of greens, and a pastry. I should have tried the asian place next door!

Love! Went on a Saturday afternoon (3ish) and decided on the sliced filet with bacon, cheese, and carmelized onions on french bread. Holey moley… it was delicious. My husband kept saying «man, that sandwich was delicious» for the rest of the afternoon! The ambiance is not that of a «restaurant»…you order at the counter, have a seat, and the food is brought to you. There are 5 or six tables inside of varying sizes and then more outside if you wish to eat al fresco. There are refrigerator displays with all sorts of entrees/​sides/​desserts for you to carry out if you wish. I noticed that the pricing was per pound for the most part. Clean, cozy, and fun to watch the chef (s) cook in an open kitchen. We will definitely return!

Finally getting around to doing my Roundz review! Had the pleasure of trying a sampling of Chef Pope’s French offerings at a recent Unilocal event. The macaroons (made a point to try all of them, no regrets), shrimp salad, and London broil were all exceptional and stood out among the rest. Heck my finomcee liked the shrimp salad and she has an irrational distaste for seafood! We had the great pleasure of meeting and chatting up Chef Pope for a good bit during the event. It was evident during our conversation that he was passionate, serious, and creative about his cooking. He certainly appreciated our zeal for the nuances of fine food talk and in turn was very generous with his time, information, and advice. It was truly a pleasure to experience and talk shop with someone who is very clearly into and has a fresh take on what he does, and sources local to boot. Chef Pope gets it and I have a feeling that Roundz is one to watch out for.

Recently hosted a champagne tasting at our house, and Zach Pope created a wonderful hors d’oeuvres menu — even though we couldn’t say exactly what wines would show up beforehand. The cheeses, fruits, veggies, meats and dessert were fantastic, and it was a lot of fun to work with him creating this menu. Have attended other events that he has catered, and the food was always fantastic.

My husband I used Roundz Gourmet to cater two events for us last weekend. The entire experience was first class. The food was absolutely amazing, the staff was so friendly and professional and the owner, Zac, was very accommodating. All of our guests raved about the food and were very impressed with the staff. My husband and I could not have been happier with Roundz.

Had my parents down from Philly for the weekend and was looking for somewhere new, fresh and fun to take them, and I settled on Roundz after reading some of the reviews on Unilocal.I have to say, local fresh ingredients and an open kitchen are big pluses for me! Like others have said, it’s a slightly confusing experience, but we did dine in at the patio-​like tables and everyone was super helpful. The sandwiches were good, but the specials were amazing! We tried all sorts of food… butternut squash soup (yum!), pork & roasted peaches & brie sandwich, turkey and cornbread stuffing, and a chicken and ditali pasta dish that was our fave — that one was OMG delicious! My mom worked in a restaurant many years ago, for several famous chefs in Philly, and she was downright impressed. Chef Pope was super nice. he was in the middle of what looked like a wedding tasting but took the time to come say hi, welcome us to Roundz, and explain some of their other events. Only open for stop-​in as we did Thurs to Sat, but the food and prices are excellent — we will be back! =)

Finally got around to stopping into Roundz and wasn’t disappointed in the least. Any café that prepares all meal directly in front of you in an open kitchen has nothing to hide :) Fresh produce, meticulously-​prepped fish and meats, flavorful grains, and even desserts: it’s all right there or on its way to being made. I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Pope, whose passion for his culinary creations and the café itself was evident… contagious even. He shared with me all that Roundz does, from catering events, to cooking classes, to «Roundz After Dark» featuring live music on select nights. Just hearing about it all made me want to try it all… in fact: I think I will. Roundz is very close to where I live and centrally located between this area’s big three (Bmore, Annapolis, and DC). It’s truly worth the drive no matter which direction you are coming from!

The first time I went to Roundz, it was to get more information on their catering for my wedding. Not expecting much from a Saturday afternoon drop in, I was blown away when the owner & chef sat me down and let me try a bunch of appetizers from an event he was doing later. I was hooked from that very second. The food is PHENOMENAL. We ended up using another caterer, but are in LOVE with the food. Do yourself a favor and get the brown gravy — it would make a piece of cardboard taste amazing. My only wish is that it was more of a restaurant — don’t get me wrong, this is a great addition to the Crofton community — but selfishly I’d like to be able to sit down, have a drink and drool into my plate for a bit.

Delicious fresh sandwiches and sides, as well as a hot entrée special each day (generally a fish entrée). Sandwiches are served with freshly made chips, either regular or sweet potato. Seasonal and local produce, woo-​hoo! Chicken noodle soup was delicious with a nice herbaceous flavor, although the carryout portion was small. Try the cake balls, you won’t be disappointed!
As noted by others, they have a little market and cooking classes in addition to the café.

I am a local organic vegetable grower in Gambrills and I have sold my produce to Chef Pope at Roundz. I frequently see him purchasing vegetables from other local farmers at the Saturday farmers market. I can assure you that he is a creative and passionate chef with a dedication to superior food and business. Fresh, seasonal, creative. This is a business that deserves your support.

I had been wanting to try this place since I read a review of it on Unilocal.We finally got around to it last night, and I’m glad we did. I had the New York strip with bacon, onions, and provolone with sweet potato chips, but there were so many delicious looking options. We did take out, but there were lots of seating options. While waiting for our carry-​out, we perused the gourmet food they had for sale, and I was excited to find they carry the beluga lentils I have been looking for. Sandwich and chips were amazing. We’ll be back, for sure.

My wife has commented a couple of times that she wanted to try this place for lunch one day. I listened, but we were never around for lunch. So yesterday, we were driving home from the eastern shore and I recommended we stop in and get some carry out for dinner. She checked and they were open until 7:00 pm (1900 for you military or European types) on Saturday.
I walked in and was promptly confused. Was this a gourmet restaurant? Was it a café? Was it a caterer? Well, I think it was all of the above. They even have cooking classes here! *hint*hint*wife*wink*
I ordered the special of the day, linguine with shrimp, scallops, and grilled vegetables. It was rather good! I’m not one to usually judge a place on pasta. Mainly because I always think of Elzar for the TV show Futurama, «Try the pasta. It has a really nice profit margin.» But this was more than just pasta with a few things on top. The pasta was clearly just one of those ingredients and the dish was quite good. Everything was cooked perfectly and the sauce was pleasant without being overpowering.
All the food in the display case looks incredible! We will be going back frequently. My wife even signed us up on their e-​mail list.

I had lunch here recently and had a curry chicken salad sandwich. I loved the chicken salad but the sourdough bread was very hard to eat. I wasn’t a fan of the regular potato chips since they were really salty but the sweet potato chips were perfect.

Oh my… I do believe we have a real winner here in Crofton! I stopped in today to check it out and wow, I’m impressed! It’s a cute café with a few tables and lovely granite counters with stools. I loved that there were an assortment of current cooking/​food magazines to look at while I ate. The food counter was filled with a mouth watering array of food that looked fresh and delicious. Marinated tomato and arugula toasted cous cous salad, dauphinoise potatoes, beautiful green beans with jullienne squash, grilled veggies… how do you decide? I settled on the New York Strip with bacon, onions and provolone sandwich on a freshly baked roll. Anything with bacon is OK with me! I sat at a counter and my plate was delivered to me by the chef. The sandwich was stuffed with tender slices of steak, thick sliced bacon, sauteed onions and melted provolone along with homemade potato chips. Very tasty! Roundz also has a selection of cool cooking utensils, oils, vinegars, cheese, fresh green salads in the cooler and fresh iced tea. They have a daily menu which today included Butternut Squash soup and Moroccan BBQ Glazed Shrimp with Grilled Veggies and Spicy Rice. I very much look forward to exploring the rest of the menu items! Oh! They gave me a cupcake topped with a delicious chocolate icing and a fresh raspberry! Brilliant move guys!!!
