Nam Phan Mixed Martial Arts Academy

Been training with Max over here for the past few weeks and I absolutely LOVE IT. I love how the training sessions are intense and you get such a good sweat and that one hour and a half flies by SO QUICKLY. I was the only girl the first time I came in for the group class which was intimidating at first but they all made me feel comfortable and didn’t treat me any different. I love that. Thanks Max for pushing me to give my 100% each time in class. Highly recommend this place.

Traveling from NorCal to SoCal to visit Nams gym and gotta say it was well worth it. Nam Phan was a really nice guy, great personality. It’s funny how much I can learn in just 10 minute there. If this was in NorCal, I would had joined in a flash. Would visit the gym some time again whenever I’m around the area.

I have always wanted to try kick boxing and I came across This place by Facebook. I checked it out and decided to sing up for the female kick boxing classes they had with Kevin (instructor) The reason why I’m giving This place a 3 star was because the owner Nam was a bit rude and as a owner Of a business you are beginning customer service should be your number one priority. There where a few times he had an attitude maybe because Of a bad day. But This is one Of the reason why I stopped going he made me feel so uncomfortable one day I refused to returned. I was aware about the rules and regulations in regards Of the mats. But one day I’m (human I’m not perfect) was done with my season and had my shoes ready to walk out when I had to use the bathroom totally forgot I had my shoe’s. He (Nam) yelling at me if I’m crazy and what’s wrong with me. I walked with my shoes on the mat This was definitely the last straw I guess another girl did the same thing earlier that week well the couch Nam took it out on Kevin I felt so bad and that’s when I realised I should not be talk to or feel This way for a service I’m paying for and This was the last time I stepped foot in This place.

Ive been training here for years and have been in good health thanks to coach Nam Phan.

Came here bc of suggestion from a member off Nam Phams team. I went twice to check out before I sign up a contract here and before the second visitor training was finished Nam Pham ask my friend to tell me to pay the first monthly fee! I did not want to get my friend in trouble so I gave my friend the money and left. Whatch out this place cares only about money and not for the training !!

Stay away from these crazy contracts. Your signing your soul away. You’ll never stop hearing from this babbling baboon if you do.

I was a member at this gym for a few months. And I feel obligated to express my true sentiments regarding this gym. The gym is adequately spacious, and there is plenty of room to train. However, I would not recommend this gym for many reasons. When you sign up for this gym, you are required to sign a lengthy contract. The monthly fees are high, and if you find that you don’t like this gym or it doesn’t fit your training needs or schedule, then you are out of luck. When I first joined, I was told by Nam Pham himself that I needed to buy some training clothes and that everyone that joined had to buy them. Luckily for me I didn’t, as I found out later that no one really had the clothes and it was a way for him to make some extra money. Once you start attending the «classes», you will soon find out that you will need to mop and clean the mat afterwards. This goes for all new gym members and even for some veterans. If I had known beforehand about this, I would never have joined. And I doubt you will be told this during your first visit there. Nam Phan as an instructor is way below average. He has poor communication skills, and has poor command of the English language. He has no tact, and at times can be very rude and disrespectful. He cannot relate to people of different backgrounds. His maturity level is very low. I hope for his sake that he works to improve these aspects of his character.
As an instructor, I learned very littlle if anything at all from him. Most of what I learned was from watching other people train. People have different training requirements, but this gym does not cater to people of different levels of martial arts training. If you want to just go and use the free weights one day and do some lifting to gain more strength, and not necessarily do jui jitsu for example, you may be harassed and prevented from working out as I have experienced. If after a long day of work you just want to go in for a quick workout and learn one or two techniques, you may be pressured to greet and shake everyone’s hand before and after your workout. And then be made to clean the floors while everyone watches you. It does not matter if you are a busy working professional (i.e. doctor, lawyer, CPA, etc). According to Nam Pham, you must conform and «treat everyone like family». And any disagreement will lead to you being reprimanded as if you were a child in Nam Pham’s big «family».
Do yourself a favor and avoid this gym altogether.

I love this place, train as hard as you want. 7 days a week.

I started training at Nam’s gym a few years ago. It was not the first mixed martial arts gym I’ve trained at, but it certainly will be the last as I have no intention of ever moving to another gym. This place has got it all. Jiu Jitsu (Gi/​No-​Gi), Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Cardio Kickboxing for the ladies, kids classes, and even CrossFit.
Classes are taught by instructors who have practiced their art at the highest level (pro).
The adult classes consists of a very diverse group of men and women. The facility itself boasts a huge mat, plenty of punching bags, free weights including kettle bells, a boxing ring, and cage walls comparable to the ones used in UFC. Their is little, if anything left to be desired from this gym.
Free trials are also offered for each class which gives you an opportunity to try it out before committing, and no you don’t have to fill out a lengthy form with your phone number, address etc.
Overall, the environment is great and everyone treats each other like a family. The gym is clean and well maintained (e.g. mats are mopped after each class/​session).

There’s a lot of great instructors here, including the big man himself. He puts a big emphasis on respect and communication. Always make sure you say hello and goodbye to everyone when you arrive and before you leave. During sparring, it’s important to tell your partner to go easy or go hard. The last thing you want is to have a bloody nose so it’s pretty important. The ma du family here is very warm and welcoming, it’s great training and there’s a variety of classes. The times are very flexible too and some of the instructors even teach privates. (That’s nice when you can’t make the classes). Coach Nams school is very clean. The mats are swept and mopped and there’s towels and wipes to wipe down equipment when you’re done using them. Although its more of a boxing gym, he also had provided bars, weights, kettle bells and a treadmill, which is nice for some strength and conditioning. I’ve been here for a number of months now and the training is awesome! The work outs are fun but tough. Almost like a boot camp sometimes. :) bring your protein shakes, energy and good attitude and you’ll have the time of your life!
Sometimes parking is a little cramped because across the way doesn’t like to share parking.

Unlimited classes and systems for one price. I’ve seen other gyms charge the same price for either limited days or just one system.
You can wear the workout clothes you already own to train, except for the newly added GI class.

Legit Instructors: Nam Phan– ufc fighter, Dave Hudson– Jiu jitsu black belt, Fumi Fujimoto– vast coaching experience/​ex-​Muay Thai fighter (90 total fights)
The classes here are great, with plenty of opportunity to spar/​roll with people of all different skill levels to hone your techniques. All the coaches/​members are friendly with no over sized egos, which makes for a wonderfully positive learning environment.

As a person that attended back in 2010 where the gym is really small, I am glad to say that the current gym is rather satisfying. Not only did it expands its space, there are variety of teachers teaching the class too! 6 am classes on M and W? what??? I have yet to see martial arts gym to open rather early in the day personally.
Know a jerk that wants to prove something in class? NO WORRIES! that person wont be in the gym for long guaranteed! Nam Phan always emphasize on communicating with your partner on how hard you will go, because he really does not want anyone to get hurt or feel unfair.
People are very supportive and friendly and that is the type of atmosphere Nam Phan wants.

I don’t know about negative reviews, but I thought was an AMAZING gym! I’ve been taking women’s kickboxing class since last year. Mr. Nam Phan is kind, caring and funny. Very skillful coach, VERY friendly atmosphere. This is the MUST place if u r serious about working out!

The most member friendly Gym, I’ve ever trained at. Nam will NOT tolerate tough guy jerks with attitudes whatsoever. Everybody is welcome, young/​old, small/​big, man/​woman and they’re all treated fairly.
I’ve witness a couple of times where he’s severed ties with someone disrespectful because money is secondary to him.
Nam breeds and environment of positivity which creates this overwhelming exuberance to work hard and get in shape.
Even though my original objective was to just lose weight and get in shape, the unexpected benefits of self-​defense and emotional control, became a bigger lesson down the road.
I normally don’t write reviews but noticing that he recently moved locations, I felt it was the perfect time to write a review.

Aside from the extremely well-​trained instructors (whom consists of professional and retired professional fighters), the atmosphere here is amazing. It’s a small-​knit group of people that treat each other like family. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an expert this place is for you. Or if you’re just simply looking for a workout to become more fit; this is it. Prices are reasonable, and if it matters there is ALWAYS parking in front of the academy.

Nam Phan mma provides the most bang for your buck 1^st of all he is a UFC fighter so you learn from the best PLUS Monday and wensday you get a LEGIT mui Thai fighter instructor who has more than 90 professional fights AND beat a mui Thai champion in Japan, it doesn’t get any better then that folks! Also we have a black belt (gi) jiu jitsu artist who spent 10 years in BRAZIL learning BRAZILIAN jiu jitsu (BJJ) by the guy (DELAJIVA) who gave antionio nugera (LEGENDARY UFC fighter) the skills he has today. And not only is _​NAMBPHAN MMA a good mma school but everyone here is family so you simply ask for help on a move and they will be more than willing to help you out on what you want to professionalize in. You can’t go wrong with NAM PHAN MMA!!!

A great MMA training academy! I attended this studio for about 8 months and greatly improved my skills and physical fitness. Mr. Phan is the owner/​head coach and he personally instructed and participated in EVERY class I attended. He is a gentleman and very professional in the operation of his academy. The studio is well organized and the mat was cleaned after each class.
I highly recommend.
