Bob’s Hawaiian Style Restaurant

Food is terrible and comes out cold. I ordered the nori wrapped chicken plate and the chicken was tasted like it was sitting out. My husbands plate looked just as terrible and also cold. Service was also very poor.

The food and service was excellent, good choices all around, best Hawaiian meal I’ve had in LA. We had fried rice and Machaca breakfast. The server was cheerful.

I have absolutely no complaints about this place. The service was excellent. The bubbly waitress kept my coffee cup filled. The food came out quickly and warm and tasted very homey and authentically Hawaiian.
This food is better than the food I’ve had on hawaii.
Everything was nicely prepared and seasoned. Nothing was too greasy or too salty.
My only complaint is that the portions were huge!!! If you’re not a big eater, I recommend sharing a plate.
We ordered both a big Hawaiian and a hungry Hawaiian. I don’t remember which one was which but one came with spam, Portuguese sausage Vienna sausage eggs rice macaroni salad and pancakes for $ 12.50. Amazing deal. Super filling and rich.
The other one came a pork Lau Lau (meat with fish wrapped in a taro leaf?), Lomi Lomi, 3 rice balls, macaroni salad. It was very good but so filling. $ 21
Hubby ordered the ox tail soup. It was one of the best soups that I’ve ever had. It tasted like something my grandma would cook up in her own kitchen. It tasted so homey and comforting. Absolutely amazing. $ 16.75
If I’m ever in this area again, I’d definitely come back here!

The food was good and the waitress was top notch. However, the kitchen staff was as slow as molasses. After we ordered, it took 30 minutes to get our food. I also ordered a slice of their pineapple cake to go. We paid for everything and we even heard the waitress asking about our cake slice to go. 20 minutes later, still no cake. My wife had an appointment, so I told our waitress to give the cake to someone there and left. I will probably never go back there again. It wasn’t the waitress’s fault so I left her a sizable tip. The kitchen staff sucks which is why I’ll never go back!

Diner converted into Hawaiian restaurant. Everything I got here was pretty subpar. The quality of the food is similar to a Denny’s actually, except they serve things like musubi and lau lau instead of pancakes and eggs. The main attraction of this place is probably its strong Hawaiian vibe, with its heavy décor and apparent involvement with the Hawaiian community via hosting events and posting flyers.

This place is pretty bad. Had spam musubi served room temperature and the flavor was pretty bleh.
I ordered the Hawaiian Luau Luau and the boyfriend ordered the Pork Kalua and they were both pretty bleh. It took me a few bites to kind of be content with the flavor, then after adding Tabasco (and i HATE Tabasco) was the flavor tolerable. The macaroni has no flavor and was bland and boring. The kimchee was insulting. I’m just leaving it at that.
The Pork Kalua was too salty and had no flavor.
The miso soup was good. The best part of this entire meal was the white rice and even that was overcooked. I’ve had Hawaiian food before and if this is what authentic Hawaiian tastes like, I’ll take my Fake American Hawaiian any day of the week.
Also cook in the back on your phone! Focus on the food. Improving the food should be your priority.

This is where I go to have a taste of good food, great service, and a nice experience by myself or with any and all of my friends and family. English and Japanese speaking staff, uh… yes please! Family friendly but they don’t get hung up on my tattoos or eclectic dress code! I can have a beer with breakfast sitting next to local law enforcement officials and across from fire fighters. Being a veteran, being able to come into a restaurant and see why we fought so hard for, looking at the families around me. They also have a wall dedicated to the «Go For Broke «brothers that went before us. Just great, what else may I say. Just gotta come try for yourself. Hope to see you there soon! Almost forgot, Da Big Hawaiian. Smash da mouth good. That is all.

I brought my parents here because we were craving some Hawaiian food and it looked like it had some pretty good ratings here on Unilocal.Sadly, our dining experience didn’t quite live up to the hype.
My mother ordered the Portuguese sausage, eggs, fried potatoes plate with a side salad bar. She enjoyed the salad bar, and the sausage was ok, but the potatoes were incredibly bland; ZERO seasoning/​flavor.
My dad and I ordered the lunch special and chose from a variety of already prepared food. It was lunch time and the place wasn’t that busy, but the food took a really long time to come out to us which didn’t make sense since it was already prepared and sitting in a serving station. When the food finally came out, I was disappointed by how oily the food was. Dad and I both had the sweet and sour pork ribs and I had the shoyu chicken and dad had the beef with eggplant. The dishes tasted good, but extremely oily; there must have been a quarter of an inch of oil on the top of the dishes. I just knew I’d pay for all of that oil later in the day.
Also, the dishes were lukewarm, not hot at all. And the chowfun I ordered with my combo was terrible! It was mushy, cold and had ZERO seasoning/​flavor at all and no garnishing or anything like I’ve seen in some of the pictures on this Unilocal site. I think the chowfun was leftover from the morning rush and just slopped onto the plate.
I tried to put on a happy front since Ii was the one who chose to dine there, but when we loaded up into the car after our meals, I had to apologize to the parents.
Now, I haven’t totally given up hope on Bob’s. I will try it again the next time I am in the area and see if it is possible I just came on a bad day or if I need to try another dish. If it is a better experience, I will be sure to update my review.

Probably one of the closest Hawaiian restaurants I’ve been to on the mainland. Nice amount of food for the money, and the best Moco Loco I’ve had since I was last on Maui. We had brunch on a Sunday and they had live music. Location is kinda sketchy in Gardena, but they have their own parking lot so it’s all good.

What a surprising delight! Taken by long time friend when visiting Los Angeles for a whirlwind trip yesterday. Lots of choices for many reasonable prices. Cheerful staffs with prompt service. The various and plentiful dishes are delightful and homey. We ordered Okazu menu with two veggi and meat dishes — egg plant, beef curry, nori wrapped chicken all delicious. Certainly would come back again! Highly recommend for any hungry souls!

I loved the homie feeling! There were 2 gentlemen who sang oldie Hawaiian songs and they had great sense of humor! The food was good! Is recommend the coconut syrup for any of their pancakes or French toast! The Hawaiian corn beef hash was good too! Is come back here again when I visit so cal.

We’ve been coming here for several years, especially since they moved from the strip mall to this former Sizzler restaurant building. The food is seriously Hawaiian, and today, even had a 3-​man band playing light Hawaiian music. The special today was salmon katsu, so I gave it a shot. Two nice fillets of salmon deep fried with rice and macaroni salad. It was a good lunch, but I think I cancelled out my health benefits from salmon when they deep fried the fish, oh well…
The staff here are real nice, and have the Hawaiian spirit in always trying to please the customer. The band was another story, as we sat right up front, so they can see everything we were eating or saying; I guess that’s the Hawaiian way.
Food here is authentic and not bland. The Loco Moco is probably a staple among most guests, and serves up a lot of gravy with the hamburger steak, eggs and rice. For dessert the sister-​in-​law ordered up a pineapple upside down cake, which looked pretty good, as I did not even get a chance to stick a fork into it because I was too busy taking a picture. If you want truly local-​style Hawaiian food, this is probably the best in the southbay.

I wasn’t too sure how to rate this one. I’ve been coming to Bob’s since I was a kid and they had their original location on Vermont. They had such great service, food, and live entertainment especially on Sunday’s. I even loved the Hawaiian coloring pages they gave me as a kid!
This new place is a lot bigger and nicer. THEIR FOOD IS SOOOO GOOD, however I noticed service is A LOT slower since they opened up at this new location. Because the food is so awesome, I bumped it up. I love the nori chicken, homemade Portuguese sausage and fried rice, and chicken long rice. Its a great breakfast/​lunch place for sure!

How could you not love this place… It’s pretty authentic than most self-​proclaimed local Hawaiian restaurants. It reminds me somewhat of Zippy’s dine-​in. Love the food… They have a wide variety of the local food back home. I’m coming back again. This is a legit local Hawaiian restaurant! I’ve been living away from the country, away from the islands for some time now., so I know when something is true to home.

I have mix feeling about this place. I’m not so sure whether I like this place or hate this place.
First off, the ambiance of this place is very relaxing. The eclectic décor deeply reminds you the history of the people, city and best of all, the tropics of Hawaii. Patrons come here to watch the live music and the food.
The food here is undeniably amazing. Some of the most highly recommended dishes are the Lau Lau, Poki Tuna, Loco Moco and many more. I personally enjoy their Portuguese Sausage and fried rice. The rice is amazing and goes well with the sausage, great to have for breakfast. They also have a wide selection of appetizer that is sure worth the try. Another bonus about this place is the parking space in the back lot area. It is very spacious and can accommodate plenty of cars.
The down side of this place is that the service here is very slow. I have been here quite a few times and the servers are either busy talking or giggling amongst each other. If the either of those are not happening, they are usually busy forgetting your orders or to bring you the tab after eating. Out of five girls that are working, only one is considered to be competent enough to do her job well. However, regardless of the obtuse servers, the food is definitely worth coming back to.

Great foods but, slow service.

Good food, live music, really nice waitress.

We had kalua pork and I had short ribs… sooooo good.

In all honestly. this is the most authentically Hawaiian restaurant i’ve been to in all of Los Angeles— so much so that the University of Hawaii Alumnae Association has events here (I’ll be sure to attend the next one). Anyways… I lived in Hawaii for 9 years and coming here is about as close as it gets to returning to the Islands.
I tried 4 things here:
Lomi salmon– honestly. it tasted EXACTLY how is should– fresh and salty.
Saimin– Very good. No complaints.
Kalua pork with cabbage– Also good. maybe heavy on the cabbage but thats alright since my wife likes veges.
Beef stew– Not the best I’ve had but not bad at all.
In addition to the food the atmosphere is fantastic. Servers have Hawaiian pigeon accents and we were even lucky to have live music (hawaiian of course) while we dined. Prices are reasonable.

Stopped by to pick up plate lunches to go. When you first walk in, it looks like a former Sizzlers restaurant (not sure if it is or not). It feels very «local», as they have Hawaiian music playing in the background and the restaurant has Hawaii high school t-​shirts and famous local people photos displayed throughout.
The restaurant was fairly busy with customers on a Sat. morn, but there is a lot more space at this restaurant than their former location,
I ordered the mini loco moco for $ 6.95. It came with 2 scoop rice, 1 hamburger patty and the most awesome gravy, which comes with onions. Very tasty and just as I remembered it to be! Prices are reasonable. The food took a little while to come out, thus the 4 stars instead of 5.
There is plenty of parking in their lot. This is a great place to get your local plate lunch fix!

Wait for food on a slow Friday morning at 8ish: 2 stars
I came by myself as I was getting oil change done. The restaurant was mostly empty. About 5 tables plus a bigger party of 10 including kids were present. Still I waited and waited and waited for 25+ minutes for my egg scrambled with fried potato.
I might come back if I crave for Hawaiian food, only if I have time and don’t mind waiting again.

Been here twice in the past weeks and did enjoy the food. Fairly large restaurant but upon walking in, did notice the B health rating on the door. Its easy to tell why they got such rating — the carpet definitely needs prompt replacement and having a couple flies buzzing around my head during my breakfast was unpleasant. But I guess you are warned…
Service is rather slow. Nice and friendly employees, but they just don’t have any sense of urgency. Majority of the female employees like to huddle around the counter by the cash registers and play on their phones, so a few times, I’ve had to physically get up from my table and approach them when I’ve needed napkins, a to-​go order, water refills, etc.
But aside from the sub-​par service, the food has been good. On both visits, I ordered the special saimin (which differs slightly from the regular saimin because it has «wontons and more veggies»). Comes with cabbage, beansprouts, green onions, eggs, char siu pork, and steamed wontons (which honestly look and taste more like potstickers/​gyoza to me), all in a good tasting broth. Being that I don’t care for eggs, on my second visit, I remembered to order my saimin without eggs and requested extra beansprouts, which they took care of without a fuss. I was pleased.
My boyfriend ordered corned beef hash with hash browns (instead of eggs because he doesn’t like eggs either) and rice and enjoyed it. If they had crisped everything a little bit more, it would have been a little better, but overall good flavor.
Others in our group ordered: the Hawaiian omelette (which strangely has a melted slice of American cheese slapped on top…) and Da Big Hawaiian breakfast place and enjoyed them as well.
Overall, a good place to come if you’re looking for Hawaiian food and can get past the B rating and slow service. I like the food, but I’m not dying to come back.
