Just adopted my new pup from this shelter! Despite a lot of these reviews saying that the staff members were nasty, I had a wonderful experience! They made the whole process as smooth and easy as possible despite the chaos happening around us. They were constantly being bombarded by people surrendering their animals or people with dogs that had been hit by cars yet made a point to inform me where I was in the adoption process. My new dog is wonderful! Can’t thank this place enough! The dogs at this place desperately need help!

I wish I didn’t have to give them any stars this is the most unorganized pathetic place I have every been too. The supervisors need to be unemployed because they are no help. The waste your time and make you come back for a dog that is already up for adoption even thought you had the animal on hold.

these people are the reason California ranks as the worst return on public services. waited to 30 minutes to find that a ticket dispenser that appeared empty in fact worked so I could experience the further joy of watching 2 people take over 30 minutes to conduct business with a line forming only to discover the dispenser does work and their are now two people ahead of me to make my overpriced purchase of a rooster and some maggots cock fighting hen that will assault everything else in a flock for 15 bucks each!!!
go pound sand! The county needs to have a private public bid for services as like all things related to the public sector in Kalifornia fat, bloated worthless, in need of a paring knife as well as an economic and physical diet.

My husband went to register our 4 month GS and the staff member by the last name Hernandez was rude! She tried to blame him for making some kind of alteration to our notice. Really? We are responsible pet owners and have no reason to try to get out of our responsibilities. Note: if you hate your job you should consider quitting and finding something else.

I’m new to this Shelter I’m hoping to find a nice couple or family to adopt my baby mix breed terrier. So far staff has been helpful in guiding me through all the steps.

Came here a few weeks ago, looking to adopt a cat. I went to what seems like every single shelter in LA and this one was my favorite. The ladies at the front and the girl (Jessica, Natalie or Nicole lol sorry) working in the cat area were SO SWEET and very helpful. They were just as excited as I was about adopting which was very refreshing because everywhere else I went it seemed like someone pissed in their cheerios lol. And they were more than happy to send me home with free toys, treats and all the information I needed. They even had Mozart playing for the kitties which I thought was adorable. Now I’m home and happy with my little baby yoda!

We finally started our quest to adopt a dog and this was the first stop since it is close to home. A friend suggested adopting versus buying from a pet store because most of these places are a last stop for pets before they are euthanized. I know now this will be an emotional quest because these pets need and want a home, some look so incredibly sad, breaks my heart. I am glad we’re looking for a big dog which most places are overpopulated with them, because as you know half the world wants those little yip yappers they can carry around and treat as babies. They have nice volunteers here who hand out bags of treats before you go in so you can interact with the animals better. I fell in love with a couple but I want to take my time and find the right one or two maybe. FYI if anybody is in the market for cats, they offer half price for the black ones, go figure.

The people here seem like they hate their jobs a lot…
They give you attitude and nasty but at the end of the day, they are the one helping you adopt a pet.
When you go in, you have to grab a number, so you don’t really have to wait in line, and you can have a seat until they call your number … which is a great system.

When calling carson animal control you will get directed here. I found a lost dog with a chip but no address. Asked for animal control to come out and pick him up to get scanned. They would not give me a time frame, there responses was some time today. Are you kidding me. Dogs will be in a different place every 30 seconds. I was also informed, animal control will give one phone call to the owners once the chip is scanned after that he is put up for adoption if no response. OMG! He was scare and afraid. Animal control was no help in finding this lost dog his home. In the end I got the dog to his owner on my own. I’ve never called animal control and assumed they would be there for me. As a tax paying citizen I am beyond saddened by this service. The push for animal safety and compassion is all around us but how incredibly complicated I found it to be just to return a dog to his owner is just plain sad. As a community we are not unity we have fallen to far apart from good deeds and we have become more and more selfish. Let’s be positive changes in the world for animals, they do not have a voice but we do.
FYI: If I see you abusing your animals I will be calling the cops on you.

I will preface this by saying that the last time I was at this shelter was in January 2014. I went there to see a 9-​year-​old Siberian Husky mix that I was interested in meeting. I got to this shelter, and I thought it looked decent. There were many breeds of dogs and mixed breeds available for adoption. The «meet and greet» area was nice and it had fake grass. I walked up to the dog I wanted to see and she came right up against the cage door so I could pet her. I asked a volunteer if I could interact with her in the meeting meeting area.
Now I want to say that this volunteer was very sweet and helpful. I wish I could remember her name but I can’t, she was Japanese American, which is all I remember. She gave me all the time I needed to interact with the dog. I told her I needed some time to think about adopting, and she didn’t pressure me at all. Ok, the next time I went back to the shelter to adopt the dog and they had already spayed her! Like they knew she was going to get adopted. That was nice. This time a staff member was helping me. She was a younger white lady and she was wonderful and knowledgeable and helpful. She suggested I get glucosamine and chondroitin for my newly adopted senior dog. She also told my why the dog was surrendered by her owners, which she didn’t have to tell me but it was helpful. Turns out they didn’t want to keep her anymore because their other dogs were picking on her??! Anyway she was still as sweet as could be even though she had scars and scabs where she had been attacked.
It’s been a year and a half and I’m still very happy with my awesome dog. She’s the best! She’s 10 years old now but she enjoys going on long walks and runs with me. So I am happy with this shelter for having given me the most wonderful dog :)

I rescued my beloved dog from here and I could not have been happier. Its been three months since I got my dog and I am so happy I gave this shelter a chance.
The only reason I took away one star is takes forever for someone to help you, but it was worth it.
The process of adopting a dog:
So you walk in there and look at all the animals, obviously!
Once you find the one that you want you go to the office, here is where it gets tricky.
They have a process, you get a number and wait your turn. A lot of the times they wont help people by the numbers just because a lot of people leave because they get tired of waiting. So even though you get a number I still recommended that you wait in line.
Once you get someone to help you to tell them the dog number, listed on the information card. if you have a smart phone I recommended you take a picture of the information card and just show it to the attendant makes things faster. If no one else wants your dog, which was my situation, they tell you come back at a certain time with a leash and an estimate of how much your going to pay. To my luck I had to come the next day to pick up my dog. My dog was not yet spayed so when I picked her up she was coned up and they gave me some medication to give to her. What I like about this is once you adopt the dog you get a waiver to get a check up for free at participating locations in carson. So a week later I took her to get her stitches checked up and she was ok.
Tips
— Take a picture of the dog information card once you pick a dog you want
— Be ready to wait a long time just to get help from staff (don’t let this discourage you)
— bring a leash to pick up your dog
— if the dog is spayed or neutered go to a pet store and purchase a cone they don’t give you one, give your dog a lot of rest

The shelter itself was horrible. The office staff were just ok but the volunteers were amazing. We ended up rescuing one terrier mix and she has been great. Please adopt.

It’s funny that most of the reviews are about the staff being rude. My experience was the complete opposite. My reason for visiting the shelter was because I wanted to pick-​up my dear cat Bambi which had sadly gotten hit by a car. Although I was sad. I was really impressed with the way the staff treated my husband and I. There was one girl in particular. She is frikkin awesome!!! I don’t know her name but a very distinctive feature is that half of her head is shaved. Nevertheless the girl was informative, kind, and very friendly. She even took us to the room were they keep all the kitty’s and bunnies and let us pet some of them. I can tell she is a genuine animal lover. Anyway my husband ended up falling in love with a beautiful blue-​eyed kitten which we are waiting to take home (it’s too young).

The staff here are rude. These staff members need to be terminated. They clearly do not like thier job. However, the volunteer, Beth, was great.

So I found a little poodle in the parking lot of my apartment right before I was headed to work. I kept it in my apartment and when I came to check on it on my lunch break, it wouldn’t stop barking. So I decided to take it to a shelter and this was the closest one to me. The lady at the front desk was rude. I had the dog on a leash, but she said that I couldn’t bring the dog inside unless I held it. The dog was dirty and I was wearing my work clothes so I wasn’t about to hold it. I tried to explain that I needed to get back to work so I would appreciate it if I could sign whatever papers that needed to be signed, give them the dog, and leave. No compassion. They made me take a number and wait in a line that could have easily taken more than an hour. I left and luckily my neighbor took the dog to safe haven and I went back to work, late of course.

BASIC POINTS:
office is VERY small, the staff in the office seem cranky and impatient but you have to remember that they have so many things to do and each person they help is a new story so they are probably just stressed with so many things going on. Its seriously the vibe that you get at the DMV so you can get a picture. The kennels themselves seem clean. Some of them have 2 dogs. Some of the dogs had diahrrea but the volunteer explained that sometimes their stomachs get upset from changing food so much since they use donations. The volunteers are nice and WANT to help you but you obviously have to go through the office first. The staff don’t really explain much about the adoption process or anything specific about the dog you’re about to adopt. Like for instance, when we met or dog, we saw that her nipples were larger than usual so we assumed that she had been pregnant before. And we were thinking that someone would tell us if she was or not, but later when we read her paperwork, we saw that they had done an emergency spay on her. She had been late in her pregnancy and had aborted 9 pups. Ugh that was sad to hear but what could we do right? It just kind of sucks that they didn’t pay any special attention to her or hadn’t bothered to check if she was pregnant or not. I mean its a shelter so I wasn’t expecting them to be feeding her special food or vitamins. When we got her, she was so thin and i’m sure that’s because they didn’t know she was pregnant and was feeding her like any other dog when in fact she was feeding 9 other pups plus her. She was so thin): Anyways, the surgical procedure seemed legit. There were no complications but our dog does have kennel cough which is expected from being surrounded by so many dogs who are probably infected. She had only been at the shelter for a couple days too so that kind of sucks for dogs who have been there for weeks. (They probably for sure have kennel cough). Usually people pay between $ 125-​$ 145. We payed $ 145 i guess cus of her abortion? The payment includes pain meds, your dog spayed, microchipped, a dose of frontline, rabies vaccine, bordtella (or whatever its called) vaccine, and another one, also includes a free check up at a participating clinic, and the fee registration for your dog. That same day they give you both the micro chip tag ID and the registration ID that they recommend you put on your dog. They package is a pretty good deal :)

BEWARE OF CERTAIN STAFF MEMBERS.
Went in one day and asked for a copy of my puppy’s shots recipes. The girl that worked there told me it would cost $ 5 to print one piece of paper.. I didn’t want to pay so I said no thank you and walked out.
Went in the VERY next day to get my puppy’s third shots. I asked the lady (different one) if I could get a copy of my puppy’s first shot. She gladly wrote a note for the office to print and handed me the receipt to go print in the main office. (where the girl who told me it was $ 5 was).
I went in and the girl handed me two papers and said one is for me and the other is for the doctors. I noticed she didn’t print the paper and so I decided to talk to the other lady instead. 1. NONE of the staff needed the extra copy that the girl told me to give them. It was just a BS cover up.2. When I told the lady that the girl was trying to charge me $ 5 not only her but a couple of the other staff members were surprised and gasped. -.-;
The lady made a call to the office and basically kept telling the girl «Don’t be a bitch… Don’t be a bitch» and finally I got my copy for free… All that for a piece of paper. .
So. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR RIDICULOUS CHARGES AND MAKE SURE YOU TALK TO AT LEAST A COUPLE OTHER EMPLOYEES TO VERIFY PRICES. I almost got charged $ 5 because one of the staff members just decide to be a bitch.

The staff here sucks. Rude. Lazy. And don’t give a shit about customer service. The kennels are kept pretty clean but other than that the staff is horrible.

I got my German Shepherd mix dog here and I couldn’t be any happier with her. She is so sweet, obedient and smart and it makes me sad to think such a deserving animal would be stuck in a shelter. If you’re thinking about getting a pet please, please, please visit this shelter or any other shelter for that matter and save a life. When I occasionally visit here I always find a great variety of well deserving animals that would make a loving addition to any family. You can look at the shelter’s website for their current list of animals but I found it’s really just best to stop by and see them in person and hopefully find one you connect with. They’re always adding new animals every day so if you can’t find one on your first visit don’t hesitate to come back again.

Please don’t buy while shelter animals DIE!!! We got Harley from here … she is so sweet — a pitt bull — she carries her blanket in her mouth everywhere she goes and even nurses on it after she eats… eekkk!!! super cute!!! Sad you knew someone loved her too — she knew sit lay down and she was trained to fetch. We pulled her to foster her after seeing a posting of her on FB. But fell in love with her !!! So please adopt from this high kill shelter !!! :)
