Our guide was a disappointment. Stayed in car whole time. Very unimaginative in describing the battle. Sarcastic and condescending to questions. Felt like he was going thru the motions.

I’ve hired two LBGs over the past couple years. One for a horseback tour with LBG Andie Custer (right after I had read an article by her about cavalry at G’burg coincidently), the second for a focused tour in Culp’s Hill with a LBG whose last name escapes me but her first name was Eleanor.
Both were outstanding. The LBGs have such a wealth of knowledge to share that I strongly recommend them for everybody from the occasional visitor to the seasoned student of the battle.
Next month I’m lucky enough to be going on a tour with Gary Adelman and Tim Smith, I can’t wait!!!

Les Fowler, you are one of those vacation moments that will stick with me for the rest of my life.
I was part of a 2-​couple visit to Gettysburg for the 150^th Anniversary that we had been planning for almost 2 years. To say we were all filled with anticipation as we entered Gettysburg is an understatement. One person is a huuuge Civil War and history buff and my husband has a bachelor’s degree in history. The first thing we did as we entered town was pick up Les for our 3-​hour tour. Honestly, I don’t know how much we paid for that tour, but I don’t care — whatever the cost, it was worth it.
Les really brought it alive for me. Aside from knowing tidbits even our two serious buffs didn’t know (keeping them well interested the whole time!), he even accommodated the two of us who didn’t know as much. But really, starting our trip off directly with Les made the whole weekend. It MADE THE WHOLE WEEKEND. Everything we saw we could tie back to this or that story told by Les. I feel a part of it all now, and was so moved by the closeness and accessibility of the history.

We booked an official Licensed Battlefield Guide for our first day visiting Gettysburg to commemorate the 150^th Anniversary of the Battle. And it was SO worth it. We picked a three hour car tour. Now, I’ve got a degree in History, grew up the son of a Civil War buff, have read several books on the war, watched and re-​watched the Ken Burns documentary, read on the plane ride out Time’s special day-​by-​day magazine on the battle. Heck, I even deigned to read about the battle on Wikipedia. I figured I was as prepared as I could be… Our tour guide, Les Fowler, however, really brought the battle alive. He even customized the tour a bit once he learned I was from North Carolina and the rest of my party was from Indiana. The tour really helped us appreciate the rest of our visit to Gettysburg and days later we were still going on about how great it was.

We hired a guide for a 3 hour tour of the battlefield. It was very economical (55 for up to 6 people) and worth every penny. I mentioned I was interested in the 69^th NY and field hospitals. He tailored the tour to suit our interests. Extra bonus: he drove!
