Inn at Herr Ridge

Nice atmosphere in the sunroom during summer but the food ranges from excellent to ordinary, the only unchanging variable being that it’s pricey.
However, my experience tonight lost me as a customer, though, as my problem was handled with such a lack of professionalism that it made me mistrust even their knowledge and adherence to food safety.
In short: service was the slowest I’ve ever had, food was tepid when it arrived, and not one person working there seemed to understand the industry and customer service.
My friend and I ordered an appetizer to share, a small soup and salad each, and an entrée. The time between courses was interminable. We were stuffed well before the salad arrived and by the time we hit the two hour and ten minute mark, our entrees had not arrived. Literally. We went to cancel them so we could just leave — we only had limited time together and didn’t want to spend it sitting in stiff chairs in a restaurant — and they decided them to bring the entrees. I told our waitress and the hostess I didn’t want it anymore, that I was full, and they offered only to wrap it up. Waitress even said, «When you ordered four courses, I thought whoa!» Really? Is a shared app, small soup & salad really «whoa-​worthy»? Thanks for calling us pigs!
They made noise about «timing the courses» (I cannot imagine what their timing was meant to be, given that most restaurants have a fifteen minute rule) and blame was clearly shifted onto our «ignorance of the way they run things.» They would NOT remove anything from the bill, nor acknowledge any wrong-​doing. In fact, the only offer of any sort of accommodation, if you can call it that, was they offered us a free dessert. One, by the way. For the two people who were too full to eat their entrees. No, thanks.
We’d been here several times before and enjoyed it enough to come back. The chef is very pleasant and always comes out to say hello. The soup and salad were great, it must be said. But if you don’t have hours and hours to spend in order to feel like you’re being served by your judgmental aunt, skip this place and go to The Dobbin House.

This has been our annual thanksgiving dinner location for a few years now. Just love the views from the porch area. I heard they had a new chef this year and Ill admit I kinda over ate but I wanted to a little of everything to give a accurate review. I’ll say I don’t think the dinner was as good as previous years. My biggest complaint was the food was only warm at best. I’m not sure they had any sterno or other methods of keeping the food warm. However, the service was excellent. The wine list rivals the better restaurants in my home town of Houston. We’ll be back next year, but hopefully the food will be warmer and they will shelve that terrible sour tasting dark brown gravy.

My wife and I just spent the weekend at the B&B and had dinner at the restaurant one evening. Excellent food and great service. The rack of lamb was delicious as was the fillet. We will definitely eat and stay here again.

Honestly, I came with limited expectations as I had heard from many locals that the restaurant was not so great, especially the service. But I had excellent food and service on my first visit: a great Malbec from a good wine list, a perfectly presented green salad, and the blackened new york strip steak. The only thing to hamper the experience was the presence of at least 3 persistent flies.

We had a party of four. Food was OK, three of us had pork chop that was somewhat tough, seemed to be over cooked then was only slightly warm when served. Meal certainly not worth the high cost. The corn chowder was the best part of the meal.
Server seemed inexperienced. Fumbled opening the first wine bottle then later served a second bottle and placed it on the table but didn’t serve it. We had to ask him to pour!
Not thinking we’ll go back.

We stayed here on three occasions and were very pleased so we decided to spend Christmas 2014. I made the reservation for three nights and thought we were fine. Four days later we were advised that we «would have to arrive before 2 PM on Christmas eve because there would be not staff on duty after that». No dinner on the Eve but a buffet breakfast would be left out on Christmas. Now I would think that they would have the decency to let us know this prior to our making our reservation, but 4 days later, AFTER THEY HAD CHARGED US A DEPOSIT? We would be «guests» at an inn with no recourse for assistance until the third day we were there but there was no concession in the rate. This is just shabby hospitality to say the least.

Gettysburg has a few Bed and Breakfast Inns, most being downtown. Although the Inn at Herr Ridge isn’t directly within historic downtown gettysburg, it is a very short drive.
The experience was very nice and relaxing. When you arrive to the Inn, you are warmly welcomed and offered wine and invited to relax in a lovely sitting area with a fireplace. The Inn keeper does not pressure you for credit card information and payment on the spot. After you relax and settle in for some time, the Inn keeper will show you to your room and explain the property details. Refreshments are available in the sitting rooms, along with complimentary champagne in your room. All of the guest rooms that we saw were very warm and inviting. You could literally go here and spend an entire long weekend, not even leaving the Inn.
The other guests seemed very nice and even though the Inn has common rooms, you still have plenty of privacy if that’s what you want.
Each guest room is different, with various features. The Inn does not have a spa, fitness center or pool (not that many B&B’s do but just so you know before hand). The website does make it seem like they have a spa though.
Breakfast was very good with a variety of items, and the servers are very friendly and pleasant. Checkout is easy and painless and you are given a parting gift upon leaving. This would be a nice romantic getaway for couples.

This is a review for the casual fare dining at Sharpshooters. Next to the battlefield, close to General lee’s HQ, lies this little casual fare gem. While it doesn’t look like much from the outside, the sandwich I had here was one of the best I have had in a long time. We sat at the second bar-​the room with the pool tables– this past Sunday around 12:30 and we were the only two at that bar. It has a more rustic feel than the central bar in the main dining room. We were greeted promptly by the bar tender who brought our beer order (a Yuengling and a dogfish head 60 min) over quickly. For an overview of the menu, they have a variety of wraps, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, burgers and a variety of quesadillas as well. I ordered the tomato, herb, and cheddar grilled cheese with fries. Described as hot house grown tomato, fresh herbs, sharp cheddar cheese on wheatberry bread with a honey dijon mustard sauce it was the best grilled cheese I believe I have ever had the pleasure of eating! I loved the honey dijon mustard sauce and the herbs made the sandwich seem extra fresh. The fries were seasoned with parmesan and were a great accompaniment. They were also pipping hot when they were brought out so they were crisp as well-​just how I like them. My boyfriend ordered the lump Maryland crabcake sandwich (being so close to MD we both figured the crab cake would be good and actually that is what I originally wanted to order but I let him win this one). It was massive-​I have never seen a crabcake sandwich as big as this one. There was no filler in it and he said it was delicious. According to the menu, their recipe has won an award for best crabcake north of the mason dixon line. His also came with fries and his opinion on those was the same as mine. Our total bill for 4 beers and the 2 sandwiches was $ 34.00-very, very reasonable. We will be stopping back here the next time we go out to Gettysburg.

I had been here before in the 90’s and liked it. I read the reviews and so I felt I needed to call and see if it would meet my needs. The reason I wanted to eat here is the view from the restaurant. I spoke to a person on the phone and told her I had been there before and had friends in and wanted a lite dinner. She told me I would have to eat in the other location which did not have the view I was looking for Will not go there tonight or ever again. Other places in town that offer views and history and the person who answers the phone is more interested in obtaining my business.

visiting Gettysburg, searching for great dinner locale, and we found superb dinner locale! Appetizer: thinly-​sliced beef, similar to steak tartare, but oh so much better! Seared by pouring hot olive oil over, I think, topped with ginger soy sauce? Not sure. Also salad of coarsely chopped asparagus, apple and crab in a sweet cream sauce that is wow! Dinner entrees, duck that was seared, with crispy skin delish! And a smoked mozzarella ravioli That was divine. Truly. An extensive wine lis; we opted for wine by the glass, option of 6 or 9 oz pour. Wonderful dessert options… we had salted caramel cheesecake and a dense flourless chocolate cake that were both sublime. Finished w espresso and twist of lemon. You will not be disappointed with this selection.

Stopped in for lunch on the way to DC and it was good food with prompt and friendlly service.
I really wanted the venison bratwurst, but was informed they were out of it. The Oyster Po Bo was fresh, with 3 large crisp oysters on a bun with lettuce tomato. The salad I opted for as a side was fresh, but no much taste to the dressing.
The special soup of the day was heart of artichoke, which was creamy and had great taste. The half of club sandwich was large and came with a side of fries.
The prices are moderate and the staff was friendly.

Top notch American in an historic setting. Fine food beautifully presented by well trained staff. Try the local salmon from a farm in West Virginia. Many other locally sourced and tasty dishes. Ignore the ghosts; they are not hungry.

We stayed in Gettysburg over Christmas and wanted a nice dinner. We certainly had one. The staff was friendly and knew the menu and the wine list. I had scallops and fish, our friend had the Arctic Char and my wife had a Ravioli dish that she said was superb. We ended with coffee and pumpkin ice cream. Very nice presentation as well. We will be back.

Had New Year’s Eve dinner. Our first time here. Easy parking lot on Rt. 30. Very good food; nice presentation as well. Good service.
This was not a special NYE menu, but their menu changes. We got small plates; Calamari salad (mixed greens with a light citrus vinagrette), brown butter chicken with fingerling potatoes and carrots. I had the sunchoke soup purée which was VERY nice. Rolls were served with olive oil and roasted garlic. I had a glass of chardonnay. We got out at $ 76.00 including one glass of wine and a $ 6 plate charge with no dessert. (we split our our orders).
Service was attentive, décor is pleasant, chairs are a little hard for a long (two hour) dinner.

Of all the dinners of a five-​night escape, the Inn at Herr Ridge’s ranked #1 for both me and my daughter. The four onion soup was amazing and novel; both the scallops and steak entrée were fabulous. Michael the waiter was top notch.
As for décor, you can quickly tire of the colonial in Gettysburg, but here it’s obviously authentic. A cozy fireplace in our cozy dining area, plus great furnishings added up to a wonderful experience.

Unfortunately the four onion soup which looked, smelled, and even tasted amazing gave me the worst stomach ache of my life that lasted two days — guess the cream wasn’t as fresh as it could have been.
The accommodations were a lot better though I was placed into the spare room also used as the massage room so it wasn’t as cute and kitschy as other rooms in the Inn… if you go do not stay in room 12 (which is really room 13 but who’s counting!)

Went here for a wedding the other weekend and thought it was ok enough. The food wasn’t anything spectacular. My prime rib came out with a lot of fat on it, but the real problem was that the knife they gave me wouldn’t cut through it at all. It was like using a butter knife.
The staff completely ignored our table for coffee and tea so some waited 30 minutes for a cup. They also were very strange in general. I said something about it raining and one of the staff members told me that no, I was just looking into the second floor. I was actually looking out the window into the sky… very odd.
Overall, I have been at worse places for dinner but this might have been one of the worse places for a wedding reception… especially since we had to leave almost exactly at 9:30 or the couple would be charged immediately for another hour. Seemed a little bit of an overkill since there were hardly any guests in the b&b.

This was one of the best places I found for a decent meal and wine list in Gettysburg. I would highly recommend Herr Tavern for a more upscale dining experience. My daughter and I tried the baby crab cakes, crab salad with apple and the shrimp and scallop entrée.
The baby crab cakes were mostly crab without much fluff, but had a decent amount of breading and were deep fried – think fritters. They had a slightly spicy sauce, but not enough to turn off my three year old. The capers gave a nice textural element to the dish.
The crab salad was not what I pictured, but it was still good. Imagine chicken salad, then subtract chicken and add crab. It was a mayo based salad with big chunks of delicious pecans, crab and crisp green apple. I liked it, but I think I would try something different next time.
The shrimp and scallop entrée was fantastic. The pasta was perfectly cooked, as was the seafood. The scallops and shrimp were large and I honestly had a difficult time finishing this dish, which felt sinful considering how good it was. I wouldn’t turn anyway away from this dish.
My only complaint was the service. Everyone was incredibly friendly, and I know the dishes are made to order, but it still felt unnecessarily slow. There was a huge lapse between the time she dropped the dessert menu off and when she came back to see if we wanted anything. Had she come sooner I would have easily ordered something, but after sitting there for so long I grew impatient and ended up with a cone from DQ.

This is simply an incredible experience. The site is an historic landmark, it was used as a Confederate hospital during the battle of Gettysburg. The ambiance is overwhelming. My date and I each chose a different meal, I had the duck and she had the salmon. Each meal was served with a custom potato dish to compliment the rich presentation. The wine list was simply off the hook. Pages and pages of wines from all over the world are available. We were able to choose a Pinot Blanc from Alsace (2007) and was treated to an old fashioned PA Dutch style piecemeal treat. Service was outstanding and the reservations are a must.,

I’m glad I broke my self-​imposed rule: if the parking looks nearly empty, drive away. It was an early dinner (6:30 on a Sunday) and there weren’t many cars in the parking lot which can mean a disastrous meal ahead. Thankfully this was not the case. Although by the time we finished dinner, there may have only been about 7 or 8 other tables taken, the dining experience was a good one. We shared the very good House Cured Salmon Gravlox with Capers & Diced Red Onion. The portion was very generous and definitely enough to share. Both our entrees were also very good (Green Peppercorn & Herb Stuffed Pork Tenderloin, Pancetta & Fennel Cream Sauce, with Potato Dauphinoise and the Seared Red Snapper with a Preserved Lemon-​Butter-​Caper Sauce.)
Our only (minor) complaint was that in this historic old inn, the music playing in the background the entire time was Frank Sinatra — not that we wanted Fife & Drums but something more appropriate to the setting would have been appreciated.
With 2 cocktails, before tip, the bill came to around $ 85.00
Overall — a place well worth a visit!
