Deceptive practices, although common to the industry, so not entirely surprising. Watch out for the Evergreen Clause that will lock you into another year more than three months before your lease is even up.
Staff are helpful insofar as you don’t ask them to actually do anything substantive. Their ability to pass the buck onto someone else, or poorly explain away issues as not being their fault, is truly second to none. They do excel in that regard, and would make excellent lawyers, although not particularly reliable people to rent from.
The prices are reasonable for the area, but you get what you pay for. Nothing notable in terms of crime, but the apartments are outdated, investments are laughably few and far between (drier unit in my complex has been broken for months — ‘parts were ordered’ back in September, it is now nearly halfway through October and has yet to be fixed, but will happily eat your money), if you don’t watch the doors for postings you may find your car randomly towed (notices are not mailed or slid under your door). The neighbors can be rather loud, given the horrific insulation, and your electric/​heating bill will reflect that. Not to mention that 30−50% of your bill will be random fees while living here. Oh, and some strangers will come by knocking on your door asking to see your bill for some ‘rebate’ program. Their legitimacy seems rather questionable.
If you can afford a little bit more in rent then go somewhere better. If you can’t afford more then just rent a room in a house if you’re single. The price absolutely does not match up with the service. But hey, at least I got a free pet in the form of the mouse I’ve seen running around after I moved in.
But if you don’t mind bugs, rats, mice, noisy neighbors, seeing the police weekly, con men knocking on your door, and a support staff that will smile while locking you into predatory rental rates it’s a pretty nice place to live.
