Bobbi And The Strays

Bottom line is that anyone who helps these poor animals are angels on earth. I had adopted what I was told was a «Pomeranian» (not so sure though if it is a purebred) from them in July. The facility was clean and comfortable for the cats and dogs. Facility staff were friendly and helpful also. They do some preliminary screening which is important. If I have any complaint about this organization it is for the lack of training and counseling they should be providing to us when we adopt a shelter animal. Although my adopted dog is very sweet and loving, she definitely has issues that require professional training and patience to correct.

My husband and I adopted our beagle here in May 2014. We were very surprised to find that he is very well-​behaved. We are first-​time dog owners so we were worried that a rescue dog might be a lot of work due to a potentially traumatic past. Bobbi and the Strays said that they just adopted him from animal control a few weeks earlier so he wouldn’t get euthanized and that he loved tennis balls. At first we didn’t realize we wanted a beagle, but he was so well-​behaved at the shelter and he had these light eyes that were so pretty. One of the young girls that walks the dogs let us go on a walk with him to get a feel of his temperament. She she told us that he seems very well behaved and laid back during their walks. She turned out to be right because he gets along with other dogs and children. Other dogs don’t like him for some reason, they bark and bark at him but he ignores it or tries to play with them anyway. He hardly barks at anyone unless a doorbell rings. Also, the employee that did our apartment check did warn us that he was a bit of an escape artist with his crate, so we were prepared to give him extra attention. He is estimated to be 4 years old now, but he is still learning new tricks.

Drove 1 hour to this place. Went here to foster a dog and pretty much ignored when i went in. There was a heavy set woman and a black lady with curly hair who were very rude, didnt even say hi or anything. They were on the phone 90 percent of the time or talking about stupid things meanwhile they have a potential person here that could possibly adopt. I just sat there scanning their photobook of dogs over and over, im telling you, i memorized all the dogs names in that time frame! The other people working there were like zombies, they didnt even look at me.
I saw 3 dogs and there was a lady who came out and with the dogs and she was very nice. There was also a man working there with a hat who was very sweet, he really wanted to help us but i dont think he had any real authority there. They had two dogs that were apparently son and mother that they didnt want to separate, however, the situation is just unrealistic because all dogs that go to homes are separated from the mother! duh! It wasnt even a puppy, the mother was 9, the son was 6. I dont think mommy has any milk.
Anyway i filled out crap and they didnt seem to budge about separating the two dogs which is idiotic. I wouldnt recommend this shelter. Not very professional or logical thinking there.
I continue my quest for my foster dog.

Not sure why there are negative reviews but I had a fine experience. I was searching to adopt a dog online and I found the location of a place nearby me which was Bobbi and the Strays. My boyfriend and I decided to check it out and we saw a dog that caught our eye, they let us take him outside to walk and a few days later we were able to adopt it! Easy and fast experience.

If your pet ever gets lost, hope and pray it doesn’t go to the wench Bobbi. She’s is rude, unprofessional and a theif. She will play games with you and have no qualms about telling you that you owe her money for your pet. Based on other reviews she’s had luck with adopting healthy pets. But her luck has run short when the animal has turned out to have behaviour issues, she lacks to even notice or work with. Money money money is all she sees. It’s just a business to her. Just ask her.

This review is for the FREEPORT, NY location which is affiliated with the Glendale location. We brought in a beautiful, very friendly and playful pit bull puppy that was found playing in the street. The woman at this «shelter» turned her away. Apparently they don’t actually help or shelter animals in need at all. This place is a joke. They gave the puppy to the police to rid themselves of any responsibility. Stay away from this disgraceful place.

We got our dog, a month ago, from them, and they’ve been helpful. He has issues, and we call the one lady, and she helps us with him. Our dog was on the kill list with the ACC, and was pulled by Bobbi, and has been returned a few times. Wouldn’t you have issues too? He is a sweet and loving dog, and they care about the animals. A few times they did not answer the phone, but I think it’s because they’re too busy with the animals. These animals are needy, since they are homeless and waiting for someone to rescue them. When they do, they are very helpful.

I came here over the summer looking to adopt a dog. I actually had a good experience when I came. The girl working there (probably 17) was very nice and had a lot of information about the dogs. She seemed very happy to try to get the dogs adopted. Although after we came home and discusses weather we were going to adopt or not, we called Bobbi and the strays. We asked about one of the dogs we had seen that day, and the lady was quite rude. She sounded like (she was about 40), she seemed like she didnt want to talk to us or care weather we were interested in adopting or not. It’s a good place depending on who you’re dealing with.

I walk by this place 2 – 3 times a week when using the NYSC gym in the same shopping center. I often see the little dogs and cats watching me as I walk by, quietly sitting there in their cages. Sometimes I see the workers walking the dogs, and I swear one time I saw a dog smiling while he was being walked.
I was going through the reviews, and felt sad when I saw this place had several reviews that were less than perfect, and let me explain myself why. I have personally worked with an animal rescue organization (not this one) and have fostered over 6+ cats, helping them find homes, and finally adopting one myself. I know how hard it can be to find a home for these little sweet guys that just want to give all the love they have in their hearts to their respected owner that takes care of them.
I hate the idea that a bad review on this place may make someone shy away from walking in because these animals that are in the store aren’t trained to be part of a welcome committee or to answer your questions. Their only hope is that the humans there do that for them, and unfortunately humans may not always be perfect at doing this. I’m writing this Unilocal review not for the workers which personally I haven’t interacted with, but for the sweet homeless animals that are in there wishing you will walk in sooner than later and take them home with you. If you are able to adopt a dog or cat, you will find yourself feeling rewarded every single day.
In addition, I have been to numerous shelters around the city and this one is absolutely the cleanest one I have seen.

Shortly after getting our dog, Dexter, from Bobbi and the Strays in 2011 he developed severe fear aggression problems. He is very aggressive toward strangers and is noise sensitive. In addition to this, Bobbi and the Strays informed my husband and I that Dexter would grow to be about 20 lbs as an adult (we specifically stated we wanted a small dog), he is now 45lbs. I think that Bobbi and the Strays needs to find out more about the socialization the dog has had if the dog is being surrendered by a family. Also, they need to be more forthcoming about size. My husband and I are spending countless hours doing behavior modification with him, and countless amounts of money on medications and trainers.
The adoption volunteers are not knowledgeable about dog behavior and breeds. Go to North Shore to be properly matched.

To bad you can post negative stars! A dog that they clam as good with children attacked my 2 y/​o son unpovoked. Then was posted back up on the internet as great with children. Really!!! Tell that to my son that freaks out when he sees dogs now or the next child that poochy malls ! Just because you pick a dog up on the side of the road give it a dirty shelter to stay in and call it a rescue dosnt qualify you Bobbi as having a clue about animals, what you and your animal freaks are doing or evaluating the mental state of an animal. But I guess my lawyer can look into all of that!
If you want an animal go someplace else! Bobbi and the strays are not to be trusted

Staff here were really informative. They always have the pet’s interest in mind. Their selections aren’t as much as their Freeport location, but they have a good open area.
My boyfriend and I were looking for a companion for his dog. We opened the door and the dogs went wild… I don’t know what to think of that… our dog is extremely friendly; doesn’t bark at all.
I didn’t like that they didn’t have an individual room to get to know the pets. We were looking for a cat that would be friendly with our dog. But the dogs were so loud that the cats didn’t even want to see us, without our dog.

2 years ago we adopted a kitten from this shelter and we love her beyond words.
This past weekend we went to find our next furry baby and applied for a puppy. The manager Andrea said she would be calling to let applicants know when the decisions were made. Come to find out the puppy was adopted by someone else yesterday.
First, I am thrilled the dog has a great new home. I hope she has a wonderful family life, BUT that doesn’t make me less unhappy we aren’t the family she gets to live with.

You know what lady, you don’t know me. You have never asked my opinion on anything. You JUMPED ON ME soon as I answered my phone! That’s why I hung up on your butt and told you we’d never be dealing with such a childish person or place again!
Don’t accuse me of «not being happy for the puppy» when you don’t know JACK about how I feel on the matter. It’s a MASSIVE abuse to use information on a client application to call them at home for no reason beyond being CRITICAL OF THEM!
You will be reported for this behavior to all required sources; of that be absolutely assured!
I hope many people adopt animals from shelters because they all deserve love, but do yourself a huge favor and AVOID this location because it is being managed by a ridiculous and abusive woman named ANDREA.

I have a not happy story about Bobbie and the stray. I will try and keep it short. My 18 year old daughter was starting school to become a vet and wanted some real hands one experience working with stay animals and not just pets. She went to bobbies and from the start it wasn’t a good experience. The women working there was not very friendly and really dint want to talk. We were the only ones in the store at the time so she could have given us some of her time. She handed my daughter the paper and told her to fill it out and they would call her. Almost a month past and no call so we went over there and they said they called both of our #‘s. OK… But she got her days three days a week from 2 to 4 hours. From the first day working there she was not really happy with the place. She said the people were even more unfriendly and the animals were only take out to be walked and for the cages to be cleaned. She felt the animals need more play time with the people and each other. After working there for a few weeks and looking for a job, a place called her for an interview the next day when she had to do her volunteer work. She tried calling but there was no answer, she called for almost 4 hours the next day starting at around 8 am and up until 30 min before her shift. When the women answered my daughter told her she was going to be 30 min late she had a job interview and has been calling all morning. The women told her to forget in and don’t come back and hung up. My daughter felt really bad and called back trying to explain when she got the women back on the phone to explain the women to her she was very irresponsible and they did not want her back. My daughter was there everyday for three weeks for any were from 2 to 4 hours. After telling this story to a few coworker I found out a coworkers daughter worked there for more then a month and had a very similar experience. The women who ran the place was very rude and nasty. Her daughter called one morning before her shift for hours to tell them she would not be in and when she got a hold of the women she told her they did not need her any more and not to come back. She was so up set she went there’re the next day to try and work it out, the women was very nasty, told her they did not need people like her working for them and she was not to come back to the store. I don’t know if they understand they are not paying any of the people who work there! They work 2 to 4 time a week for any where from 2 to 4 hours a day and they don’t get payed, they do it to help the animals and the people who own the place. Even in a paying job you sometime need a day. I am not saying they should be letting everyone do what they want but u don’t come in for one day and they let you go! They are doing a great thing trying to help the animals but they need better people skills! I tell everyone to go to a place where they workers are happy to do this job and are happy to work with the people and the animals!

I have visited the location, and have been involved with several rescue activities with Bobbi and the Strays. They are a busy organization and sometimes you have to call a few times before you get a response. I think they do a great job and have saved many many animals over the years!

First of all, I didn’t adopt a dog. I have no intention of adopting a dog, I just like visiting shelters and watching/​playing with the dogs.
When I went, the cats and puppies were all in the small room. The bigger dogs must’ve been stashed in the back room or something. I walked in and no one really offered to help me, it didn’t exactly look too busy.
There was a gated area for the puppies. It was right next to an outlet and a pit bull puppy was licking whatever was plugged in. Pets might be the first concern, but safety isn’t.
Update:
There are no bigger dogs. I learned that this is a no-​kill shelter. Honestly, I would suggest going here over the New York Animal Care and Control, where the are rude and unpleasant.

I would give Bobbi and the Stray’s zero stars if I could. First of all they are the most snobby, rude, zero compassion group of people I have ever come in contact with and I hope they read this. They claim to rescue dogs yet they want nothing to do with you when you call them. I found 2 small dogs, one being a puppy. They told me to call 311, really? So 311 can call the ACC and have the dogs euthanized? Some rescue agency, yet they stick their hands out at any moment for donations. What a bunch of frauds. They should be ashamed to call themselves animal rescue. DISGUSTING. Bobbi and the Strays needs to call themselves what they really are, a pretentious, lack of compassion, heartless organization.

We wanted to adopt a dog from a reputable shelter, and I could not have been happier with the experience we had with Bobbi and The Strays. Having found a cute puppy through their website, we were able to meet the dog in person at an adoption event and then submitted an application to adopt on the spot. It only took about a week till we were approved to adopt our now-​pet – which was great because we fell in love with him! – but even with the quick processing I still felt that the staff did all they could to make sure this was a good match for both us and the dog. They also got the dog neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before we picked him up. Most importantly, we were very happy seeing the dedication of Bobbi and The Strays has for finding their animals stable, loving homes.

Pat, they keep the larger animals out by JFK. If you contact them I’m sure they’d be happy to have you come down and take a look around.
I’ve adopted a large dog from them and it was a great experience. They care about the dogs a lot and provide a lot of support for adopters after the pet has left their care. The volunteers out at JFK were helpful and very friendly. Like Samantha mentioned there’s an application process and a home visit but Bobbi’s volunteers did their best to accommodate our schedules and it was utterly painless.
Right now I have my dog sleeping at my feet and I couldn’t be happier. Bobbi and the Strays is a great place to get a pet.

So I have this theory, I call it «The Airport Theory».* The premise? You can tell alot about an area by its airport. All of these are true stories.
Orlando? lots of Mickey ears on kids & sun bonnets on the older crowd. Both equally annoying, except when the sun bonnet shares their Ambien on the plane ride.
JFK /​LGA? everyone pushes everywhere.
Denver? lets just say the airport population matches the weather outside**
SFO? On Dec 29ish, I was traveling to SFO from JFK. Being the swell guy I am, I asked what the gentleman next to me was doing for New Years.
He replied, «Im going into the city.»
me, puzzled, but completely serious– «Short trip to the Bay, no? When you flying back?»
him, more puzzled– «What? Im going to SF for NYE.»
«I thought you said the city.»
«I did»
«but you’re not going to be in NYC?»
This made for an awfully quiet 5 hour flight. This just means the Bay is «special». ***
Anyway… applying this foolproof theory to Bobbi & The Strays.
you take a shii-​shii pseudo-​strip mall, and shii-​shii people, and you’ll get a shii-​shii pet store. This is where Paris Hilton drops off her used pets. Ugh. I hate small fluff ball dogs. Sadly, despite their website showing plenty of medium+ sized pups (
