History

Established in 1956.

The Brand Library opened in 1956 as a branch of the Glendale Public Library system, with a focus on visual arts and music. In 1969 an addition added a professional art gallery and recital hall for concerts and other programs. In 2014, Brand Library & Art Center reopened after a two year renovation that restored the 1904 mansion and provided much needed updates to library spaces and infrastructure.

My husband and I look forward every Friday evening in the summer to the free outdoor concerts at Brand. Every week has different performers. It is very eclectic and fun. We usually sit in the chairs that are provided but others bring their own or sit on the lawn and picnic. Some audience members even dance. There is a nice feeling of community to be there. The program begins at 7 p.m.
I want to thank everyone in Glendale who is involved putting this on each year.

The library is really amazing and the architect structure and land is beautiful. My wife and I including her cousin went to see a Mexican folk singers they were really good we enjoyed it. After the performance there was an exbitnation called the Armenians in Mexico it was excellance telling the story Armenian genocide how it began and also tells how Armenians came to Mexico to escape the Genocide. The exbit will be at the library just a week before go’s on tour.

This is a park, library and music center. The gardens are spectacular, the architecture is fabulous but the library is my love. A whole building of every form of music. I was shocked that they would even let people check this stuff out. Almost ancient stuff and you could take it home. Thrilling if you into music.

This is a nice library. They have a great collection of books. Their Russian literature and Russian language books selection is extensive. The librarians are very kind. I just wish the working hours were more customer-​friendly!

O-​M-​G! THIS PLACE IS GORGEOUS! I am so happy that the city was able to restore this building to its glory because it has such a story to tell. My best friend worked here prior to the remodel and she said that it used to be in such disrepair so it’s good to see that it has been cleaned up and polished. This particular library is a special collection for everything fine art and decorative arts including an extensive and DVD collection. If there is a CD, or musical, you have been searching for then then Brand Library is the place to look for. There are restrictions on what you can borrow and returned so be sure to inquire about those policies. Parking can be a bit tricky so it’s best to get there right when they open or on a busy weekend. If you haven’t been to see the renovations then, by all means, plan a trip and get ready to be amazed!

Possibly the most beautiful public library in SoCal. I definitely drive WAY out of my way to come study here, because it’s just that beautiful – like to the point that I’d consider getting married here. Yes. it’s that beautiful.
If you’re coming to study, the reading rooms are really quiet and there are a decent number of outlets!

I have been to numerous Glendale libraries in search for a great place to study for long hours. This library is a perfect place to study. The whole place is just so awesome. They have many outlets for charging. The restroom is clean. They have coasters for your drinks. I just love everything in this library. Please check it out.

Came here for the first time for the Plaza Music Series on Friday, Aug. 28. What a hidden gem above Glendale! Very easy to get to. Such a beautiful library. An impressive drive up seeing the beautiful mansion. We came here early to have a picnic which was fabulous. The music was lively and loved the band. I am coming back here to explore more of this place.

Super pretty! Who doesn’t like Brand Library? What an interesting history, and a beautiful old building. I highly recommend checking it out. You can take some nice photos up there, too. If you love history/​historical stuff/​old architecture, you’ll eat this place up. I can almost imagine Leslie Brand hanging out on his front porch. ;)

I absolutely ADORE this place! What a hidden gem, and it is so nicely maintained. The librarians are super friendly and patient, and will go above and beyond in helping you access the MANY resources this little library offers.
First off, WOW, that music collection! I had no idea a place like this in LA even existed… an entire room filled with CDs of every type of music imaginable, from 11th century Gregorian Chant to music from Afghanistan. Oh, and did I mention that they have a 100 CD checkout limit? Yes, that’s right. You can check out 100 CDs at a time. Bring a couple bags with you. They also have an extensive collection of music scores — just give the librarian a call number if you can’t find it, and he or she will find it for you!
The reading rooms are gorgeous, and it is always super quiet. This is a converted mansion, and it still has that feel to it. I will definitely be making this my regular reading spot.

This is a beautiful library with new desks and couches to sit on and is an all around great place to study. They do have wifi and outlets for charging computers. However I didn’t give this a five star because one of the workers here who sits behind a computer with gray hair was talking on the phone with an obviously hearing impaired person because his voice was ringing through the quiet library. I get that this is a small library but his misunderstanding of library etiquette was astounding.

First off let me say that I’m a HUGE fan of the Los Angeles Public Library… The fact that books can be ordered on line, and shipped to whichever branch is more convenient… Is amazing. And while there are many music/​reference books, with only one copy, that cannot leave the main downtown branch… Going downtown, while a pain in the ass in some aspects, is also an adventure, and the collection there is splendid.
But now… I’ve discovered a new resource… The Brand Library! It has a great selection, it’s easy for me to get to, and it’s in the most pleasant surrounding…

Thank you to the City of Glendale for meticulously restoring this piece of Glendale history.
The Brand Library is the perfect spot for you to go for quite reading, study or listening to music. There are several rooms that offer nooks to escape the busy city. There are plenty of computers available for you to use. This library offers a large selection of world music for you to enjoy.
The art gallery is open and available for you to meander — and it is a lovely place to do so.

When they held the Open House for the Grand Reopening last week, I couldn’t get anywhere near it to park, let alone go in for a tour. So, I snatched some time during a break yesterday, and was so glad I did. The restoration is beautiful, with the wall paint true to the vintage of the building. In one room, they have stenciled gold-​leaf all along the walls just below the ceiling. At one end of the room, within the stenciling, they have a mini-​portrait painted of Mr. Brand, and one of Mrs. Brand on the other side. Sentimental as I am, I looked up at Mr. Brand, and whispered, «Thank you for this.»
The music library is wonderfully reorganized, with something for everyone’s taste. I decided to borrow two books, one on Keith Richards and the other on Ozzy Ozbourne. They’ve got unusual musical periodicals, such as «The Strad,» and something I think was entitled, «Living Blues.»
I can’t wait for the gallery to re-​open with its new exhibit.
