Mike Chiara grew up in the tough streets of Northbrook, Illinois, an affluent suburb of Chicago. He was a shy, introverted nerd who actively participated in things like Science Olympiad — specializing in building bridges out of balsa wood and buzzing in with the right answer before the question was completely read in that quiz show competition thing that they did — and virtually guaranteeing that he would never date a cheerleader. He attended Loyola Academy High School in Wilmette, Illinois and did extensive advanced placement work. At Loyola, he ran track and cross country while simultaneously acting in musical theatre and playing first trumpet in the band. He became an Eagle Scout at the age of 17. His love of the outdoors is still evident today in his unhealthy obsession with sailing (he has been a competitive racer since age 12), fishing, camping, and hiking.
