If you desire to be a substitute teacher then I recommend not using this company. I have barely received more than 2 assignments per week in the last two months. You have to wake up at ridiculous hours in the morning to get a phone call between 6 am — 9am. They rarely give you any notice so you are waiting by the phone all dressed up and ready to go only to find out that you waiting for absolutely no reason at all because they did not call you.

Absolutely, the most rude women, I have ever had the pleasure of speaking of over Skype. Quite frankly, I am concerned for the well-​fare of the children with her standards on hiring. Despite having double majored from a national accredited, university she deemed me to dumb to come up with lesson plans. Having other interests and hobbies in the arts I would like to share with children another negative point. Apparently, I didn’t seem interested enough in children because I am not a pervert. Beyond thinking kids are cool little adults that is about all I have to think about them and oh yeah, subbing isn’t rocket science. She made a big deal about how they hire all sorts of candidates without credentials. Awesome, so you hire people with no credentials that have babysat before and they can create better lessons then a double majored college grad that also speaks spanish.

Teachers On Reserve is a fantastic company to work for. I have been employed as a substitute teacher by Teachers On Reserve for almost three years. They are professional and very well organized.
Before working for TOR I was employed by another company who, like TOR, sent substitute teachers to work at charter schools. This company wasn’t even one tenth as organized as TOR and by my second year working for TOR I decided to work solely for them.
As a substitute teacher TOR has helped me to foster professional relationships by matching me up with schools that fit my expertise (I graduated with a degree in film/​theatre and I am currently obtaining my CA single subject credential in English). Many times I was contacted for jobs that fit my interest, such as subbing for English teachers, photography teachers, and film studies teachers. One of the things I like best about working for Teachers On Reserve is that they tend to place me near my home and in schools that I really enjoy being at. Their system is set up so that if you do well at a school the school may request you back (and if you really like being at one school, you may request that school). Once I established relationships with many of their client schools I was asked to come back and often booked in advance. This is great for a substitute teacher!
In the three years that I have been working for them I have gotten to know them well, even if only by over the phone. Ritu is always cheerful and friendly while Ketryn seems to know exactly which jobs would suite me. Skye, who hired me, is always very positive and pleasant over the phone and Diane has always been accommodating with my special requests or need for a flexible schedule. Recently, I’ve needed to take a leave of absence due to having a baby. I continued to work for TOR up until I gave birth and they continued to accommodate me due to my being pregnant.
If you are looking to work as a substitute teacher, Teachers on Reserve is an excellent choice!

I worked for them as a substitute for some time. Most of the time, they treated me well, and most of the time, my experiences at schools went well, with some glaring and very hurtful exceptions. In any case, I made the mistake of moving on to substitute teach for public schools instead, just because it would make me more money and afford me other benefits such as medical care. When I realized my mistake and tried to return to Teachers on Reserve, they refused to take me back, citing my not signing some kind of paper beforehand. It had been too many years for to have remembered whether I ever signed such a paper or not, but either way, I thought it terribly unfair to not take me back due to such a trivial technicality. Even now, I wish I could return to work for them, at least on a limited basis.

Very Rude on the telephone just trying to get info. NOT included on the website. Jeez people, I’m sure your boss and the bottom line of your agency could have used my business. So unprofessional. UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Teachers On Reserve is private agency that hires out substitute teachers to public, private, and charter schools. It is a professional, organized company. *This is a lengthy review, but I wanted to pass on this important information.
I began working for TOR during my undergraduate years. Andrea Ikenberry interviewed me years ago for the teaching position. (We don’t call ourselves «subs.» We are much more than that. We ARE teachers.) She saw potential in me and invited me into the TOR family. When I went away for graduate school, Andrea and the team wished me well… and told me there would always be a position with TOR if I wanted to come back.
It’s been a rough few years for America and our schools were hit as well… Local School District HR and principals did not give me promising news when I graduated with my Master’s degree… I contacted Andrea again and the team welcomed me back. The first year back was tough. I was constantly «on call.» The nature of substitute teaching depends on the main teachers’ schedules and (often) health. We step in and provide the best experience possible for our client schools. In the same way Nordstrom encourages their employees to make the most of their work, TOR works the same way. If you do a horrible job, people won’t call you back. If you do a great job, you grow your list of potential call backs. You get what you put out. I made a reputation for myself last school year. This school year, I was booked in advance and was specifically requested by schools around my area.
The dispatchers are professional, knowledgeable, and kind people. TOR staff see potential in people and give them a chance to succeed. I can only hope to pass on the kindness and generosity they’ve shown me as a young educator. After all, teachers are in the business of seeing potential in young people. TOR has helped me grow as an educator, young professional, and human being… Diane and Skye have radio worthy voices. It made my morning to receive calls and voicemails from them. Ritu is very easy to talk to. She reminds me of my friends growing up. Diane is extremely organized. My fellow TOR teachers make work fun. Andrea is truly a professional, wise, and great boss… Diane and the team vouched for me when client schools expressed interest in hiring me as full time employee. They spent time on the phone with potential employers (while I was still an employee). How many employers would do that for their employees?
Thanks to Teachers On Reserve’s introduction, I was offered a full time position at a client school. I start my new job soon. I’m excited for this next chapter of life, but am sad to leave TOR. I wish all of the TOR family the very best in all of their future endeavors. It’s been a great privilege. Thanks for believing in me.

A fantastic agency that supplies private/​charter schools with all manner of substitutes. If you work hard for them and aren’t picky about assignments, chances are good you will be rewarded with long term jobs and the possibility of school employment. Very accommodating company, I would be happy to work for them for a long time.
