History

Established in 1960.

The Atlantis Oceanfront Inn, at 125 Atlantic Road ~ on Gloucester’s scenic Back Shore, was originally a 40 room motel built and operated by Frances Vrachos and Mary Stamas in 1960.

Opening the first weekend in May, Atlantis now features stunning ocean views from every room, the best sunrises in the City and full, award-​winning breakfast in their oceanfront café, where the public is welcome.

Since the current owners purchased Atlantis Oceanfront Inn 16 years ago, they have renovated every room at least twice and continue their upgrades in order to appeal to today’s discerning traveler.

The owners feel extremely blessed with a highly professional staff, who welcome visitors from all over the word and treat each guest with extra care in order to help them truly experience and appreciate all that Gloucester has to offer.

Originally from Reading, MA, Jan began her career in Hospitality Management at Niagara Falls in 1975. After moving to Phoenix, she proved her mother right (who said, «You will always come back to New England») by moving back to Massachusetts to work for the Belz Hotel Group in 1980. That’s when she began to summer in Gloucester.

Sixteen years ago, Jan and her husband purchased Atlantis Oceanfront Inn, has renovated every room and is continuing upgrades in order to appeal to today’s discerning traveler.

The view — the ocean’s right there, and the sunrise is breathtaking.
It’s immaculate — beats anything we’ve ever seen!

We decided pretty much last minute to get away for Labor Day weekend. We headed to Gloucester early so we could go to good harbor beach, then check in to the hotel. After driving around Gloucester for over an hour trying different beaches (all lots were full/​residents only) we decided to call the hotel and see if they would just let us go to the pool before check in.
We called the hotel a little before noon and check in wasn’t until 3, but they told us to head over and we could absolutely enjoy the pool! When we arrived the wonderful staff actually had a room ready for us to check in early, a map of how to walk to good harbor, and smiles on their faces. We got into our room dropped our stuff and headed to the pool. Man, what a view! Beautiful flowers everywhere and a you can see the ocean from everywhere in/​at this inn!
The room was perfect, the most comfortable hotel/​inn bed I have ever slept in!
We actually had a hard time leaving because it was so perfect. If you are from New England and looking for a quick getaway, this is where it’s at! You can walk along the road and explore the rocks, watch the boats, walk to the beach, or just sit and enjoy the crisp ocean air. We are definitely coming back here, no doubt about it!
Don’t worry I didn’t forget the café! Quick, friendly service! The food was delicious and again, the views make everything! I wish it was open for lunch and dinner! We would’ve eaten there all day if we could have!

After deciding on a whim to take a long weekend getaway, I took to the internet and found Atlantis Oceanfront Inn. Not knowing what to expect, we came in with an open mind hoping for the best. What an awesome surprise!
The first impression checking in, the staff was very friendly and my husband very much enjoyed the warm chocolate chip cookie!
What a perfect view of the ocean! The rooms are very clean and nicely appointed. We very much enjoyed sitting on the balcony taking in the views to both start the morning and in the evening after we had explored the beaches all day.
My two kids loved the pool! It’s very relaxing to sit and listen to the ocean while they were swimming. The towels right at the pool were an awesome touch as well so we didn’t have to use our beach towels or bath towels.
While there is not round the clock food on the premises, there are plenty of great places to eat in town that were worth the short drive. Plus there is a larger than norm fridge for you to store anything you might want in your room.
The café is amazing! Some of the best breakfast I’ve ever eaten!
Long story short, you won’t be disappointed! We will definitely be back!

Whilst the Café at the Atlantis is a bit more expensive than most other places for breakfast in town, it’s well worth it. The view of the Back Shore of Gloucester is unsurpassed and the food is delicious as well. The oatmeal/​molasses bread is so good that we ordered an extra side of it. The Backshore Omelet, with beautiful skinny asparagus, portabellas, and tomatoes [the tomatoes could have been riper but added juicy texture nonetheless] and swiss cheese was perfectly cooked and scrumptious. We were seated at a side window but the view of the ocean was good overlooking the hotel’s pool. The view from the front windows is spectacular.
The restaurant is larger than I thought it would be and the tables have comfortable space between them. The service was very good.
Highly recommended!

The view is amazing. The rooms, though pretty basic, were cleaner than most major hotel chains. The staff was friendly and accommodating. And the breakfast at the hotel restaurant was Ah-​mazing. The hash and hollandaise sauce are not to be missed! Really pleased with our stay.

While we didn’t stay here, we did come for breakfast, and it was exceptional. Their selection was huge and very enticing… we had fishcakes (delicious), and a huge omelette with lots of fresh veggies. Our waitress, Kim, was very attentive and anticipated our needs before we even had to ask. It’s not often breakfast is so good you remember it all day, but I suspect that will be the case. Highly recommended!

While the Inn is located along scenic Atlantic Road in Gloucester, MA with a great view of the ocean/​bay, the Inn itself has seen better days. The room was neat and clean, however the mattresses are VERY old and merely covered with extra padding to try and give an impression of being plush. They provided no support and at first I wondered if they were deflated areobed mattresses.
While advertizing free WIFI, the signal was very weak and essentially useless despite being a room less than 30 feet from the office of the Inn making internet access almost impossible, even in the middle of the night.
While the pool is adverstised as a Heated Outdoor Pool, the pool was clearly NOT heated and was very cold despite moderate weather temperatures over the past several weeks.
The door frames allowed both light and noise from the parking lot to penetrate around the entire frame of the room, and the sun block shades were ineffective againist the
morning sun rise making it impossible to sleep after sunrise.
There may have been a time that this was an upscale tourist destination, but it is past its prime and needs serious updating, especially new mattresses. Overpriced!

Had breakfast there this morning and it was so, so, SO delicious! My husband and friend got the rustic breakfast, and they couldn’t stop raving about the herb foccacia bread that it came with. I got the homemade hash and it was so flavorful and not too salty (which I find to be a common theme with homemade hashes), and their pecan sticky rolls are without a doubt the best way to start the morning. The service is fast and friendly; every time we go in there we feel like we’re being greeted by friends. Highly recommended! Check it out before the end of the season!

Anyone who has ever gotten married on the North Shore knows what a pain in the rear it is to find hotel blocks for guests. I decided that Gloucester just collectively hates weddings and everything associated with them.
Jane at the Atlantis proved me *completely* wrong. Not only was the Atlantis half a block from our venue, it was the only hotel in Gloucester I could find that would even discuss blocks with me. We were able to reserve a small block, but a block nonetheless with a very reasonable agreement (any rooms left empty by 6 weeks before the wedding open to the public). As the wedding got closer, Jane only proved to be more and more helpful.
Our event ended up being amazing and I am SO glad we decided to work with the Atlantis. My husband and I and both our immediate families all stayed there for the whole wedding weekend and absolutely loved the place. The rooms are simple but absolutely all you need — updated bathrooms, a balcony, and of course, the incredible view. The only downside is a lack of queen– and king-​sized beds (most rooms have two full beds). Jane allowed us to use the café as a last-​minute rehearsal space since it rained the whole weekend and we’d planned for an outdoor rehearsal with no backup plan (oops). And best of all, we had an emergency overnight FedEx delivery that had to go right to the Atlantis, which was no problem at all: the staff signed for it on our behalf with no attitude or complaint. And the day after the wedding, THEY called FedEx to have the package picked up so we didn’t have to worry about a thing!
We ended up hosting our post-​wedding brunch right in the Atlantis breakfast café, which was easy to plan with Jane, delicious and very reasonably priced, and of course very convenient for everyone who was staying there and at other nearby hotels.
Keep in mind this is a ‘beach motel’-style establishment, but with that expectation it is comfortable, accommodating, and really a lovely choice for wedding guests.

This is pretty much a no frills in — clean, convenient and right on the ocean. I’ve only been here in the off season and it still seems a little overpriced but you’re across the street from the rocky shore so I can’t complain.

Having spent a night at the Atlantis Motor Inn I now know what to expect at a retirement home!
Mean staff who resent taking care of their guests, ridiculously over priced for what you get, the décor is designed for the geriatric, the «heated pool» was ice cold & forgot about asking the staff for anything because you’ll just be bothering them !!!
I admit the view of the ocean is lovely, however you still have to drive to the beach.
Would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone !!!

There is a great breakfast café at the inn, and it is open to the public. If one of you only prefers sweet and the other only savory — breakfast at the Atlantis Inn on Atlantic Avenue is your best bet as they do both well!
The muffins and breakfast rolls (cinnamon rolls, pecan sticky rolls) are so, so, so good!
Plus, there is such a beautiful view overlooking Bass Rocks and the sunrise! Gorgeous!
If you are a fan of savory breakfasts, the best in town is at Charlie’s Place. If you prefer only sweet, head to Two Sisters on Washington Avenue. The Atlantis is a close second in both categories!
