History

Established in 1997.

In 1996 owner Tom Ellis went out into the West Gloucester woods and began cutting the trees down for his boatbuilding project. He hired 11th generation Essex boatbuilder Harold Burnham to design the schooner and a band of shipwrights to help build what was the first schooner to be built in 50 years in Essex. The keel was laid in December of 1996. Six and a half months later, the Lannon, named for Capt. Tom’s fisherman grandfather, was launched. Now, 15 years later, she looks better than ever!

The Ellis family (Capt. Tom, wife Kay and son, Capt. Heath) sail from May til October out of Gloucester, America’s oldest fishing port, and promise you a good time. So, join the Ellis family and join the fun!

Tom E.

Business Owner

Tom has always had his own business. From carpentry (Fred Ellis and Sons, in the 70s) to antiques (The White Elephant Shop, in the 80s), to kayaking (Essex River Basin Adventures, in the 90s) to sailing (Schooner Lannon 1997 til now), working for himself has always been to Tom’s liking. Now, sailing all summer and skiing all winter is what keeps him happy.
