Specialties
Lookout Mountain Nature Center creates awareness, understanding, and conservation of Jefferson County’s open spaces through year-round educational programs and exhibits.
History
Established in 1997.
In 1917, Charles Boettcher, a prominent Denver entrepreneur, built his family’s summer home on Lookout Mountain. The Lorraine Lodge, as it was then called, served as the family’s hunting getaway, and game herds were kept on the property. In 1968, Charles Boettcher’s granddaughter, Charline Breeden, donated the home (now called the Boettcher Mansion) and 110 acres to Jefferson County Open Space «exclusively as a public park, public library, and museum site and public recreation place for the benefit of the general public.»
Lookout Mountain Nature Center was housed in the Mansion until the current facility opened in 1997. This stunning building is a model of sustainable design and features numerous recycled, reused, and Earth-friendly building materials, as well as interactive exhibits and a native plant garden.
