Morbid Anatomy Museum

This place is ridiculously bad. Some crappy wax figurines and old books doesn’t constitute a museum. A lot of the random crap they have isn’t even relevant. I never review anything but this place was so terrible that I want to save others from the experience and waste of money

This place was a huge ripoff! Barely any exhibits in one room, poorly labeled-​so no clue what you were looking at-​made me and my friend take everything out of bags AND not even a ticket for the bags-​They have some nerve charging $ 8 per person.

The gift shop is more interesting to me than the exhibit that you have to pay $ 8 for. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the $ 8. Maybe 3 or 4 dollars or just a donation jar as others suggested. If you have the money then definitely check it out, but if you are low on cash and can only afford to go to one museum then this would probably disappoint you. I spent about 5 minutes and felt like I had seen it all. Might be able to stretch it out to 10 or 15 minutes tops. Definitely worth coming just to look at the gift shop and get a coffee. I would come back for those things. :-)

One of my favorite places to visit. They have incredible exhibits not to mention the bizarre items they have on display. Wax figures, animal skeletons, paintings, and books galore. I was so excited to come here for the first time! Though it’s a small museum, it is truly different from any other museum that NYC has to offer. If you’re a fan of the macabre, this is the museum for you.

Traveled an hour and a half to see a special tour. Couldn’t get the curator to even answer me straight, about buying a ticket. Supposedly it was a free tour that day, but after asking 3 times about paying, or how to get on the tour, and not getting a real answer, we left. You are not missing anything. I figured it would be small and unique, it was just small. Nothing in the shop was very interesting. My own collection cabinet at home has more interesting curios. I would recommend buying their book, and that’s about it. This was a big disappointment.

Let down completely, I wish I could say more but it’s just a tourist trap. A couple of wax figures and souvenirs, that’s as exciting as it gets. No more to say here but don’t waste your time.

Utter letdown.
it’s not a real museum since nothing is labeled and you don’t feel like you’ve learned anything new or gained any insight into the history or weird collections, cabinet of curiosities, taxidermy, the macabre, or any of the other stuff they claim to focus on.
It just looks like a room with someone’s weird, random stuff, with a Ripley’s Believe it or Not vibe. It’s also not particularly morbid. I’m also weary of any cultural institution which makes visitors enter through the gift shop. They can take a much more scholarly approach if they want to be taken seriously.
Oh yeah, they also have a shitty café which serves organic morbid coffee and sinister cookies. There is a wooden communal table for all of the morbid hipsters to drink said morbid coffee and discuss the latest innovations in hamster taxidermy.
Don’t get me wrong, the place has lots of potential. They just need an actual experienced curator to do a complete overhaul of the display. Someone also needs to get rid of the hipsters.

For a museum, it had a lesser array of morbid things than most oddity shops I’ve been to. They have great marketing though and their events are popping off on Facebook. I was lured in by the Flea Market which I didn’t even gain entrance to because the line wrapped around the block by the time I got there. To compensate, I purchased entrance to the museum which turned out to be only two rooms upstairs with lackluster displays. Most of it was plastic renditions of anatomy rather than real anatomy suspended in formaldehyde as would be appropriate. Not worth the money, visit Obscura Antiques and Oddities instead and you’ll get twice the value for none of the money (if you don’t buy anything).

Don’t waste your time. It seems like a very cool coffee shop with a nice hip staff, but for the love of god do NOT plan your day around this museum because you will be sorely disappointed. After visiting the incredible Morbid Anatomy Museum in Philadelphia I was shocked to find this place to be completely separate and unrelated. The 2 room exhibition feels more like visiting a weird grandpa’s apartment and is really not worth spending any money on. It’s very upsetting that Phili has such a great museum and we’re stuck with this tourist trap :(

Interesting artifacts, but lacking any descriptions or background on the displays. Very small. Not much in the collection at all.

I felt the rooms were lower end and though I appreciate that the goal was to expose patrons to creepy stuff and waxes of medical anomalies, it could have been done better. I did, however, appreciate the history of the preserved wax models from ~100 years ago. $ 8.00 entry for disappointment.
The little café downstairs was nice and had a cool vibe, though and some of the items for sale in the gift shop were more interesting than the museum itself upstairs.

I would not lie — I only been introduced to Morbid Anatomy Museum recently, but… it was love at first sight…
We snooped around on first visit (I came with someone who was a member here for longest time), and few weeks later I got membership and came back on my own.
I was in creative slump, and this was an inspiration to kick my photography to another gear.
I mean, how could I not love this? It was inevitable. Skulls, jars, creatures, old books, and tons of rotating exhibitions. Dark. Cool. Scary and deeply interesting.
First floor is a café & store — and guess what — they serve Ovenly cookies! Coffee is good, cookies are delish, and merchandise is cool (and changes often).
Second floor is there exhibitions take place — and one more room for library and small permanent collection. It is quiet and small, perfect to enjoy the oddities or look thru books.
They change exhibitions often, and also run lectures & old movies in the basement — pretty interesting stuff.
We were lucky to be part of opening ceremony for House of Wax, and see the exhibition at early hour, which was incredible.
Staff is very knowledgeable, and so, so friendly — ask away if you need something, they will help!
Love it to bits.

Second time I visited this place for the «Death Café» event, which was documented by Vice magazine and hosted by a London friend Louise de Winter.
The event was very interesting which draw all sort of people to it which satisfied my taste of environment
I loved the coffee and gift store where the event was held. Tasteful interior and objects of the macabre, interesting, artsy, gothic vibe with a very nice selection of books, jewelry and other magic souvenirs… great place to find unusual presents.

Besides am a big fan of the «Lowbrow movement» so of course the museum is cool in my eyes.

I cannot comment on the museum as I visited the event only, which didn’t included entry to the exhibits.
It looks they have great diverse happenings and I will keep an eye on it.
So far I recommend TO YOU to like them on FB and get on their email list for event updates.

This was what I had excepted. There was a neat exhibit upstairs, but we really spent most of our time perusing the curiosities in the upstairs library and then downstairs in the shop.
It was a nice stop on our way to the airport to fly back to South Florida. We picked up a few things in the store on our way out and if you need goof coffee, well they can fix you right up!

I agree with the other reviewers, in that it’s not really a museum. It’s more like an atmospheric collection of knickknacks. Imagine what would happen if you gave a 14-​year-​old boy a thousand dollars and told him to buy every creepy thing he saw at an antiques mall.
Might be good to rent our for a macabre cocktail party, but that’s the best I can do.

I am obsessed with Living Social and Groupon deals! One of this sites had two for one deal for this «Museum», I think it was 8 $ for the two of us. I over paid.
I was expecting something like the Mütter Museum in Philly which i have being dying to go to. But what I got was lots of things in jars behind glass, with no explanation. It seems like a collection of someones hobby work. You go up one flight, and there is one big room and one narrow room. There is a sad looking employee in each room to remind you to not take photos. But they have little to no knowledge on what is on display. We spent a max of ten minutes in this place, and left feeling duped.
There is a gift/​coffee shop on the ground level that was more interesting then the whole museum. Do Not Waste your money or Time!

Just got home from the nightmare drive through Brooklyn to see this place. Fuggetabouttit… I shoulda researched it first.
Anyway, they seem to have a VERY broad definition of the word «museum» here. If you like poorly stuffed rodents and badger embryos, this place is perfect. If you don’t, then pass on by. Oh, there’s an elephant jaw there too if that sways your opinion.
You walk in to a gift shop filled with expensive items, more expensive coffee and an unhealthy dose of hipsters. And hipsters are never good, no matter how morbid or shocking you’re expecting a place to be.
After the gift shop you make your way up to the museum. The girl working there said, «the entire second floor is the exhibit!». Meanwhile it’s the same square footage (which isn’t much), but just higher. The first room is filled with more taxidermy, a single skeleton, prosthetic arms (this was pretty cool to read the history about those items) and more stuffed rodents including a light box of stuffed squirrels at a bar. Yes, squirrels set up like they’re in a bar. I’m not kidding.
So I make my way into the next room and the infamous «library». This room is even smaller than my bedroom and has various knickknacks laying around or tacked to the walls. In the middle of the room is a really small desk where you can read one of the few books on the handful of shelves. They should get a dictionary in that tiny library and look up the definition of «library» — and also «museum» while they’re at it.
All in all, while completely milking it and reading the disordered guide I think we spent 14 minutes at best in there. If I sound bitter, it’s because I am. Surviving a drive through Brooklyn to find out that THIS is the reason you wasted your day and spent $ 8 per person is not a good feeling. It’s a morbid feeling. Get it? Morbid?
Don’t waste your time.

I was super excited to check out the Morbid Anatomy Museum after reading up about it and hearing an NPR interview with the owner.
But alas, the experience was severely disappointing. First of all, the size of the place is deceptive. The first floor is mainly just the front desk and the coffee bar/​event space. The second floor has an intro room with hair art (which was really cool) and some daguerreotypes. Nothing you can’t finish seeing in 5 – 10 minutes.
The final room is more of a book room than anything. There’s random unlabeled stuff on the shelves, and some taxidermied animals and preserved skeletons against the back room.
There’s a table and some chairs so you can just plop down and read some morbid books. Not exactly a fun time if you’re with other people.
All told, we were in and out in under 20 minutes. Worth the $ 5 admission (via Amazon Local. It’s usually $ 8/​person otherwise), but don’t get your hopes up too high.
The taxidermied chipmunk ferris wheel was cool though.

So I gave 3 stars because I think this place has potential and I’m really hoping the museum can grow into a more worthwhile experience. Long story short it was a bit disappointing. I wanted more morbid. More exhibits. More rooms.
Luckily Amazon local had a 2 for 1 deal because paying $ 10 a person is absolutely insane considering the inadequacy of this museum. The gift shop was the best part with a bunch of cool taxidermy and books. I’m not sure the café was even open.
There was a school group in the library when we went so we basically only really got to look at the one incredibly sparse room while they hogged everything else.
If you are wanting to actually get your oddity eye candy fix head over to Obscura Antiques in Manhattan. I believe they have a hand in this museum and their little shop, although a fraction of the size of this place, is so cram packed with stuff you’ll return multiple times just to see it all.

I wanted to write a positive review so this establishment can continue to exist and be around when I get a craving for the dark side!!!
Today there was a «Day of the Dead Fleamarket»! Yes! I know! exactly up my alley! I’m a sucker for all things Day of the Dead! What can I say, I’m a MexiCAN not a MexiCAN’T! I came here and was far from disappointed. This place is supporting local artist sell their crafts! They have created a very specific market and is the perfect platform for their success. I walked in and the line was already long at the register. The place was a lot larger than I expected and had high ceilings. And there was gothy candles, dark books, squirrel heads and even housewares. I was loving it!
And then I noticed there was a basement. say what?! The basement was where the actual fleamarket was. It took me back to my Seattle days of finding local artist that are selling amazing things for reasonable prices. There was bats in glass cases, even a Pee Wee mini doll, skull ceramic cups, sugar skull chocolates, afforadable vintage brooches and a ton of quirky trinkets to purchase. There was a ton of people. I squeezed in and got a cool feather brooch for $ 4! I wanted to do all my holiday shopping here! This really should be a monthly market.
The bottom line is come here for specific events or a gothy cup of coffee.
I think it’s beautiful and it made my fall afternoon!
I will definitely be returning!
