C Lazy U is Colorado’s première luxury guest ranch getaway. It’s a traditional dude ranch with all the modern amenities and activities you could ask for and was named a top world resort by Conde Nast. Located in the scenic wilderness of Granby, Colorado, about two hours outside of Denver, the ranch is far enough away to feel like an exclusive getaway, but close enough to make traveling easy. History

Established in 1919.

1900 – 1910: The Dexter House, currently used to house staff, served as a post office and stagecoach stop.

1917: Wilson Smillie purchases the ranch on Willow Creek and sends his brother Aubrey Fenton «Jack» Smillie to run it as the F Slash.

1919: Jack Smillie marries Gertrude Mildred McQueary

1919: First guest houses built on the property when known as the F Slash Ranch

1920: Jack Smillie buys the F Slash from his brother Wilson.

1925: The Smillies build the initial barn and several other structures to accommodate two dozen guests.

1945: The Smillies sell the guest ranch in the late summer

1946: Dick and Katie Schoenberger purchase the ranch and rename it C Lazy U.

1947: Construction of the Lodge begins.

1948: Two wings are added to the Lodge to welcome the arrival of guests in the winter.

1949: Marion Palmer arrives at the ranch and establishes the children’s program.

1955: Head wrangler, Dawn Cone starts working at the ranch until his retirement in the mid 1990s.

David Craig is C Lazy U’s General Manager. With over 25 years of hospitality experience, David’s background includes resort, luxury hotel and membership club experience.

David is the former Chairman of the Board of the Colorado Hotel and Lodging Association, and he won the 2015 CHLA Hotelier of the Year Award.

I only wish I could give this place more stars. Allow me to paint a picture: the first afternoon and evening we were there, we were treated to a spectacular sunset over snow-​capped mountains. We ate some of the most delicious food we’ve ever had — something along the lines of braised spare ribs, tomato basil risotto, haricot verts and chocolate cake. As we were looking out of the enormous picture window at the mountain scenery with horses in the foreground, it started to snow. Our kids ran outside with huge smiles on their faces, twirled around and caught snowflakes on their tongues — their first time in the snow. It was magic.
The next day we rode until we were sore. They have horses for all ability levels. The barn staff was positive and encouraging and really organized. The next few days included trap shooting, tubing, and more riding. Our cabin was a perfect home away from home. Warm, cozy, and with plenty of firewood for as many fires as you wanted.
The staff — oh the staff!!! They could not have been more friendly or helpful. They handled all requests with ease and grace.
It is also about ½ hour away from crazy good skiing at winter park. You really can do it all here.
I cannot wait to go back!

What a BEAUTIFUL place. The location is 100% stunning, and all of the staff are friendly and helpful. They have a herd of amazing horses that are absolutely breathtaking, and contribute to a real western experience. The cabins are incredible, the outdoor fire-​pit is magical and the food is enough to warm your sole. I can’t say enough great things about this place. If you are looking for a first-​class western experience look no further.

This place stole my heart, it is absolutely amazing. Everything was amazing, the staff, the food, the activities. They go above and beyond, really something special. An unbelievable experience. It’s hard to say what my favorite thing about C lazy U Ranch is because everything was so good! Obviously the location and history are top notch. The food was so good my mouth is watering just thinking about it but I think it’s the staff that really hits the home run. Not sure where they find them or maybe it’s they find the ranch but really all I can say is wow. I want to go back! I could write on forever about this place but all I can say is if you get a chance to go, do yourself the favor and GO!

We just spent a week (over the 4th) at this guest ranch it it is everything stated, and then some! Our kids had the best vacation (2 boys 7,9) ever! Each day started with 200 horses trotting in a herd to be tacked up for the day. The wranglers are assigned based on your ability so there is no intimidation do you multiple skill levels. Everyone there has a great time!
The extra activities such as trap shooting, fly fishing swimming or drinking great wine is all second to world class cuisine! I can’t say enough good things about this place!

We had the pleasure of attending a conference at the C Lazy U last week. The ranch and amenities are beautiful, however, what made the venue exceptional was the phenomenal staff. Every employee we encountered from the greeting staff to the wranglers made us feel more than pampered and appreciated. The only negative was we were only there for 1 night !

Our 3 boys had a wonderful time riding horses on the 8500 acre ranch almost every day! There was so much to do, great food and service. A highlight was the zip line and leap of faith. The hospitality of the staff and owners was over the top. We will make it a yearly trip!
