Schmohz Brewing Company

I purchased a six pack of their non alcoholic beer at a liquor store in Canton, MI and was excited when I noticed the brewery was down the street from the hotel where I was staying. As others have mentioned, it’s a dive bar. Don’t expect a fancy atmosphere like some other microbreweries. It’s a «bare bones» type of place. They have a few TVs, a pool table and ping pong. They a large selection of beers on tap and available in growlers. I can’t comment as I did not try any.
I decided to be good, so I ordered a root beer. It was ok. Pretty flat and a little sweeter than I care for. I wouldn’t get it again or purchase a six pack if I were to see it at the store.
The location is a little strange, it’s in somewhat of an industrial/​office park area.
There are a lot of breweries in Grand Rapids, I wouldn’t rush back to this one.

No food. No attitude. Just really good beer and a nice mix of people. Sat at the bar for a couple of hours and met some of the regulars and the head brewer. Had a great time, nothing fancy going on here but that’s probably why I liked it.

Overall, the beers were solid-​not great, just solid. The vibe and interior of Schmohz was simply underwhelming – reminded me of a «divey» neighborhood bar in an urban part of a major metropolitan city. For a brewery that’s been around as many years as it has been, it still looks like the basement of a bad Knights of Columbus hall. Would I go back? Probably not.

Low key brewery that offers up some of the tastiest beers in GR. They have free popcorn, friendly staff, and inexpensive beers. I would highly recommend the Bonecrusher Stout and Treasure Chest ESB.

Had a great flight & fresh popcorn. My daughter’s hand made root beer was very tasty.

In a city where craft brewing and pretentiousness often go hand in hand Schmohz Brewing is a red solo cup in a frosted pint world.
Refreshingly honest and true to who they are. A small brewery with some darn good beer.
They don’t have a restaurant, nor do they have hostesses awaiting with blinky pagers. Their taproom could best be described as «Your bachelor uncle’s trailer». Everything has a relaxed, thrown together look. Clean, not fancy but adequate for their needs. The regulars bring an air of familiarity that makes you think that you could just as easily be hanging out in a living room watching the game with some buddies. They have an adjacent Bier Garden with outside tables and cornhole if you are up for a game.
This atmosphere is not for everyone and you know what? They are ok with that. For convenience there’s cold 6 packs to go or just fill a growler, its one of the most reasonably priced in town. They have a wide range of beer hoppy to no hops at all. We tried their Scottish Ale (smokey, thick and strong) their Amber (which was nice and more malt forward which is rare in this city) and my personal favorite their Zingiberene Ale, which is brewed with ginger in place of hops. Really refreshing for a 90 degree August day. We had great service and a fun time.

meh, I’ve experienced better, as two stars would indicate, describes it perfectly. I wanted to love this place, its right by my work, and so I had high hopes. but I was really disappointed in the the taste of the beer. It lacked any discernible flavor, even the black IPA brewed with Citra hops. I am a Citra hops kinda guy, and I just could not taste it, and thats just bizarre. I suggest their brewer take a tour of OddSide in Grand Haven. Or stop out to RailTown in Dutton when they have the Citra Warrior IPA on tap. Could learn a thing or two…

Split a beer with my date, as we are driving around to different breweries. We got Bone crusher stout. It was pretty good. The brewery itself is nothing to write home about. It kinda reminded us of a biker bar and the only people there seemed to be regulars. Id probably stop again if I was right there again, but I wouldn’t go out of my way.

We go to schmoz occasionally. Its a good neighborhood brewery but they need to come up with better beer flavors. They should also keep a few that everyone likes and quit making the weird ones. Not a fan of the ginger beer. Wheaty plus citrusy beers are always good. Although at 4.50 a beer I can’t go there too often.
And it’s time to start offering food. Like burgers. And a few more big screen TVs showing sports events.
A reviewer had mentionwd it’s like a bar in the UP. That’s bc the owners went to Tech.

Outstanding brew pub. The beer I great and they also make their own root beer. Another pretty cool thing is they also make a NA beer.
No food but they have free popcorn. You can also or food and eat it there.
The atmosphere is nice and laid back. Even without food this place is a Five Star.

Place is a very comfortable «neighborhood» bar. It was cool that people were sitting there playing cards.
No food but your going for the beer anyway. It was nice we could stop here and try some good local beers, with out the crowds and wait of the «downtown» breweries
I like the beer flights, so you can sample a variety.
A little disappointed with the «free check in coupon on Unilocal being free popcorn, than finding out it’s free popcorn all the time for everyone.

The place felt «homey» and inviting. However, it didn’t leave me feeling particularly excited about being there. The décor and set-​up was definitely sparse. The beers were okay. Nothing was terribly interesting but it was drinkable and local. I just don’t think their beer is as good as some of the other beer being made in Grand Rapids, MI.

Schmohz is an incredibly accessible brewery and tap room; it would actually be the perfect place to bring your friend, coworker, or relative who thinks that craft breweries are pretentious. Schmohz is the exact opposite of pretentious. Very unassuming, kind of blue collar, not at all hipster.
I went for a Kent District Library tour and tasting. I really dug the Bonecrusher and Zingiberene, but I loved the tour we were given by the head brewer, Chaz. He was informative, colloquial, and witty.

I’d like to like Schmohz more. There’s nothing really _​bad_​about it, it’s just not quite right. The beer is good, but not great. The staff is never rude, but we seem to be tolerated not embraced. It’s just a little off. Never really feel welcome there.

Great brews, great people, great pub. Started going here about 10 years ago when they first opened. Fell in love with the BoneCrusher stout and the rest was history. The work force shares a strong passion for their craft. Their selection of beers on tap has grows dramatically since they first opened. They offer growlers and corny keg fills. Bring in your own food type joint. Outside seating when it’s nice out. Huge open pub /​game area. This place has not forgotten what it’s all about… the beer.

I recently asked around to see who in Grand Rapids has the best-​house made root beer. Schmohz was the clear leader among everyone I polled. In fact, I’m not sure if there is any other place in GR that makes their own root beer onsite (msg me if I’m wrong). I stopped in to see if what I was hearing was true. I’m happy to report that yep– they do indeed some mighty fine root beer! Their normal beers are pretty darn good as well.
Although I’ve known about their neighborhood brewery, tucked away off of 28^th street on Patterson, for some time, I don’t make a visit out often enough. In addition to their snappy and sweet house-​made root beer, I really liked the Zingiberene Ale aka the ‘Zing’. Made with ginger, it doesn’t have any hops to it for a totally different taste. I can take it or leave it when it comes to hoppy beer, so this one appealed to me.
The real game changer happened when I requested a root beer float. The bartender said yeah, sure she could do that for me… or she could make me a beer float, with their Bone Crusher Stout, their malty, chocolaty beer. Ice cream and beer?! Ice Cream IN beer?! Sold. The stout would’ve been a indulgent enough but with the creamy vanilla ice cream in it (you know the kind, from the big clear plastic tub someone’s mom had a birthday party when you were a kid), it was simple, straight-​up, to the point YUM-​MY! It was a win/​win — desert and an alcoholic beverage. Perfect way to end my recent visit.

Great beer (love the monkey IPA, the red), not crowded, popcorn only food, excellent service! Allow tasting before you order. Have an old school PAC man arcade game. Would go back again and bring a pizza with me!

I reallly like this brewery, unlike the bigger craft beer places in grand rapids like founders and grand rapids brewing company (which are great) this place has a strait up, «we are doing great beer for a great price attitude. Nothing fancy about it.
Just great craft beer at a great price.
My only complaint is that they need more than popcorn to eat, I don’t need a fancy meal but some nacho’s or soft pretzels with cheese dip would be great too.

I walked in, looked to my left and saw a picture of a gnome. With that… I fell in love. This is a place where you should definitely belly up to the bar. It’s got a copper top by the way.
Super friendly people… I showed up as a newbie and despite that there mostly seemed to be regulars at the bar I didn’t experience a cliché record scratching déjà vu when I walked in the door. I went back a week later and the woman working the bar not only remembered me but also my name! How’s that for service!
I’m currently in love with the Zing… it’s got no hops so it’s not for everyone. I like that it’s brewed with ginger. The hopknocker is a big seller too and with a 10% punch you can drink a couple and feel pretty good. Can’t wait to go back for the pickle beer in May. They also refill ANY growler… I think Schmohz will be the drink of choice at many a backyard BBQ this summer.

I can’t count the ways I love this place. First let me say I LOVE dives. Its can’t just be a dumpy place it has to be a dive with charm. This place has all that and more. We walk in and the place looks a little sketchy. I sit at the bar, which is a way cool copper top with thousands of drink rings on it, and look at the menu. At the end of the bar are «Norm and Cliff» straight out of Cheers. Norm is drunk asking us the same questions over. I check in on Unilocal and there is a check in bonus of free popcorn. I ask the bartender if I can redeem it and she about doubles over laughing, then tells Norm and Cliff we have a «free popcorn» coupon and they start to laugh. Come to find out there is free popcorn all the time. So the newbies just got tricked. A short bit later a couple with a child come in and Cliff proceeds to tell me how the lady of the couple has a beer named after her called the «Bra Buster». Norm asks what I’m drinking and I tell him «The Schwartz». To which he says «You come in here and order The Schwartz, you are brave». Then Norm and Cliff argue the merits of The Schwartz. Norm is lost by now and I look at the brewery in the back and Cliff, who doesn’t work there, says «Hey do you want to see the back»? And proceeds to take us on a brewery tour. It was a lot of fun. Some strangers walk in off the street and the whole place treats you like family. A drunken dysfunctional family, but hey this is a dive brewery right?
Oh I forgot to talk about the beer. The Schwartz was awesome and we walked away with a growler of some ginger infused beer, which I’m enjoying now. All were great. I wish they were closer to home or I’d stop in more often.
