I haven’t been to Hen House in a long time! I think after this visit I might make a few more trips this way. Took the girlfriend for breakfast after I finally was won over by word of mouth reviews. This place may be the best breakfast spot in the Granite area. It’s an older place that probably hasn’t been updated in a while, but it’s well kept and homey. The food is reasonably priced and portions are solid. The closest comparison to them is Denny’s and Hen House pretty much one up everything. More food, better food, for less money. Friendly and attentive service as well. Very nice place for a casual breakfast!

Perfect hot fluffy biscuits, mouth watering French toast. Definitely will come back. As a trucker, I end up at the flying J across the street fairly often. This place is superior to the Denny’s.

We were taking a reset at the Flying J across the street and since all the Unilocal reviews warned against the Denny’s within we decided to give the Hen House a go. Yes, it is dated, yes it is old. The carpets are nasty and need to be ripped out. The menus are sticky as are the tabletops. But my food was pretty darn tasty. I had the open face turkey with mashed potatoes and ordered an extra side of mac and cheese because I had heard good things about it.(Roast beef was my first choice but I was told that it was frozen, very popular apparently.) Generous portions smothered in gravy as it should be, mac and cheese wasn’t cooked to hell and had a nice peppery flavor. Oh by the way the sweet tea is also very good. Our server was the best part of the meal, she embodied what a diner server should be, slightly snarky without pretension. She established a very comfortable presence at every table she visited and always had everything ahead of time before we could even ask. I would mention her by name but sadly I’m horrible with names and I forgot. She did wear glasses however. ;) We would probably come back to this place in the future if we’re in the area.

Great service. Consistent quality of both food and coffee. This is my sisters’ and my favorite breakfast place. The menu is pretty basic but we never left unsatisfied.

It’s a nice quiet diner, with extremely friendly staff. I got the country fried steak dinner with mashed potatoes and a double order of Mac and cheese(I would’ve taken pictures but I was too hungry to wait!). It came with a dinner roll, and I ordered a coffee to drink. Maybe 5 minutes after I ordered, my food was given to me hot and ready to be enjoyed! The mac and cheese was fantastic, the chicken fried steak nice and crispy, and the potatoes… they were real!!! I’m a truck driver, and the last time I had real mashed potatoes and not instant has been almost a year now. My waitress always made sure my coffee was topped off, and treats everyone like they were family. I’m currently sitting in the diner now while writing this, because I just ate so much food it would be a bad idea to move anywhere or I might explode. There’s a Flying J across the street, and if you’re a trucker as well, park there because truck parking here is limited. This place is amazing, I totally recommend eating here!!!

Not good at all. This place is a filthy dump. Its clear the people that praise this place are either crazy or will eat ANYTHING for $ 1. I still cant believe i ate here… don’t ask me why, it was complicated.

This place is a good greasy spoon. Fresh cooked to order and fast. The help is quick and courteous. The specials are worth the price which is petty cheap.

I am not from around here and wanted some good ol fashion home country kitchen cooking by gawd! So I stopped in this place. I was steered towards the fried chicken(literally half the menu is some varient of fried chicken) by the nice waitress and was not dissapointed. Probably the best fried chicken I have ever had, or at least tied with the best. For 8.99 I was given half a chicken, a bowl of some gooey delicious mac n cheese, a generous scoop of fluffy seasoned mashed taters covered in juicy gravy, and a bowl of passable green beans, and a dinner roll. I wouldn’t write home about the veggies but everything else was amazing. Great service, great price, great food, and all in a very convenient location.

We stopped in here tonight for dinner … Service was good… Not exceptional but good They weren’t busy at all They have a little store/gift shop Kinda of like diner tables and chairs. All hard wood no padding Décor was cute I got the The Hen House Chicken Chef Salad… I must say I was very disappointed It wasn’t a chest salad at all It was a bed of lettuces with four tiny pieces of tomato, a tiny bit of shredded carrots a couple rings of onions a little shredded cheese and a few strips of chicken… No eggs No cucumbers nothing else $ 7.95 ??? Really. Wow Hubby got open faced roast beef with mashed potatoes gravy and cottage cheese He said his was really good and with the price … All in all ok I guess but I never would order this salad again And in all honesty … I don’t care for Denny’s(across the street) but if I wanted a salad I’d go there Not sure if we would return or not… Night consider giving it another chance… Maybe

As we drove across country back to WA State, my husband was looking for road food. We stopped just outside St Louis and ran across the Hen House. No cars out front at 6:00pm. Hmmm. It was raining and inside the AC was cranking. Décor was ranch-style with tables and un-upholstered booths. A small«gift shop» was near the cashier with candy, t-shirts, jewelry and paperback books. Based on the name, I chose the chicken. The upbeat waitress said they were out of wings due to Thursday being all-you-can eat. Darn! Love wings. The fried chicken came with 3 sides. Veggies were out of a can so I chose mac-n-cheese, coleslaw and potatoes & gravy. I’m a baked macaroni gal but I tasted it. They make it with two cheeses: Velveeta and something else. Not my favorite so I passed it to my husband who said it was OK but thought there was a little too much velveeta for him. Chicken was cooked perfectly, lightly seasoned with the breast meat sooo juicy. The kitchen subbed another drumstick for the wing. The coleslaw appeared to be shredded on premises and was lightly dressed which I prefer. The big surprise was the fluffy biscuits – two of them instead of one. A little warmer with real butter would have been perfect. But with a price of $ 8.99 for a half-bird, all this is a steal. My husband’s liver and onions entrée was so-so. The slice of liver was fairly thin causing it to be just slightly overcooked and the red, grilled onions – he ordered extra – were thinly layered with only about 8 – 10 rings. They were good, though. They normally serve it with brown gravy on top but they weren’t sure whether he’d like it so they served it separate. Gravy was OK. I have to say I loved our waitress that night – the one wearing a hoodie. We never had to wait to have our order taken, for our plates, for refills on our drinks. And she was the only server for the whole place! The tea came with a huge wedge of fresh lemon. Bathrooms were older but clean. By the time we left, there were many more patrons. We would eat here again. PS – We had to go back to fetch my husband’s hat the next morning(Friday) so we had breakfast. My two eggs were perfectly over-medium, the ham cut thin again and a little salty, and the home fries were ¾″ sized, skins on and served piping hot. Loved the spiced apple butter on my biscuit. Our waitress did a good job but was a little cranky.

If you’re parked at the Flying J I’d say make the seemingly long(but in reality short) walk across the street and ditch Dennys. If you love all American southern comfort food this is your place! Extremly affordable, peaceful, waitress was super attentive and sweet. In total we paid $ 32 for a big Bowl of chilli fries, bowl of chilli topped w/onion and cheese, decaf coffee, orange juice, then 2 Dinners(each dinner comes with 3 sides! & dinner roll). My hubby had the chicken fried steak topped with gravey, roasted potatoes, &2 sides of mashed potatoes. You will definitly miscalculate the portion & fillingness if you’re passing through & orginally from cali. I had the chicken breast strips, french fries, hashbrowns, & mac n cheese; one of the best mac n cheeses I had. Such a big yummy dinner. We ended up taking most of it back to our truck but loved finishing it later. our waitress was very sweet and even said that this place is family owned and been around for over 30 years and hasn’t changed through the years. Do yourself the favor fellow drivers(really I’m just the wifey) make that walk totally worth it :).

Solid breakfast place for a road trip. Nothing fancy, nothing to write home about but it got the job done. Two of us had country fried chicken and eggs, the other had a French dip. I think breakfast is the way to go here as my friend was not impressed with his sandwich.

Nice reasonable place. Breakfast is priced just right and they are willing to make anything you ask. They open at 6 am and close at 9 pm. I had a complete 3 egg breakfast including biscuits and gravy for $ 7. Outstanding value. Clean. Much better than Denny’s across the street.

Great little place with a southern charm. Everyone in town knows each other and if you are just stopping in because you’re driving through, they know it. The food hit the spit and great tasty coffee.

We had grilled chicken sandwich & grilled chicken BLT, which were less than adequate for the price. The BLT was just prefab chicken smaller than the bun, 2 strips of bacon & dressings. I had expected a typical BLT. 3 slices of bread, chicken, bacon, lettuce & tomato. Very disappointed. Pretty little toothpicks & cut in four pieces. Not so. And no flavor. The grilled chicken sandwich came on a bun, not bread. Grilled prefab again, yes, but half the size of the bun. No dressings. We had to ask for tomato, lettuce & mayo. Still disappointing, no flavor, blah. The waitress did give us a discount, but we won’t go back.

My daughter and I stopped here for light dinner one evening just before they were closing. We decided to come here based on the Unilocal reviews. So kudos to all those Unilocalers out there because this is not necessarily a place that we would just stop in and have dinner. It looks like a place that has been around forever therefore that’s probably why they have good solid meals. I only wish we had gotten there earlier so we could try one of their dinners. It was just too late to eat heavy so we had a late dinner of a BLT and French toast with strawberries. Both meals were satisfying and even the Italian wedding soup was delicious. give ‘em a try.

The Hen House never disappoints us! If we are in the area we go here for breakfast or whatever because the food is good and consistent and not over priced. They also have truck parking, which is a real plus for us. We will walk over from the Flying J across the highway if that’s where we have parked.
