Ernie’s Van & Storage

This experience was disastrous so sorry to say.
I needed two antiques moved 7 miles from one part of Nevada City to the other.
I paid $ 400. to Ernie’s V & S for two men, to have my antique venetian mirror break and then have Ernies V & S refuse to pay any damages. The mirror was a total loss and so were their services.

Great experience moving my dad to an Independent Living apartment. Jordan and Eddie were very patient and easy to work with. They worked quickly and came in under the estimated time. Both Jordan and Eddie handled the stressful move with great sensitivity for my elderly father and his girlfriend. At the Independent Living facility they were very courteous in their interactions with the residents. I would use them again. Our estate sales person recommended Ernie’s and after reading the reviews I was a little concerned. Evidently things have changed because we had a very positive experience during a very stressful time.

We had a very positive experience amidst the stress of moving from CA to WA, and back again. I have nothing but good things to say about them. I will use them again in my next move.

Absolutely the worst consumer experience I have ever had. Dishonest is just the beginning when describing Ernie’s. Not only was I misled, I was overcharged, then lied to, and finally blamed for every one of their internal miscommunications and deceptions. Boxes were not inventoried and I never saw them again. An heirloom table was stolen and they claimed they never saw it. The receiving agent said he’d never seen anything close to the unprofessional way this shipment was packed. Unbelievably bad experience. Keep away from Ernie’s. Atlas should be ashamed to have their name associated with this group of thieves.

We have actually been moved twice by Ernie’s. The first time from Stockton, CA to Penn Valley, CA, and this time to a new home in Penn Valley.
Both times there were extraordinary things to move such as a hospital bed and a piano, but in both cases, everything was moved without a complaint or any damages. The second move was from a one story home to a two story home and I never heard a single gripe about the stairs.
These guys are conscientious, very concerned about proper blanketing, very pleasant and made sure the furniture was in the right place.
Honestly, I hope I never have to move again, but if do… I will definitely call Ernie’s again.

Moving coast to coast is no easy task, so when you hear the moving representative tell you that he’s going to «scare you» with a really high estimate you think he’s doing what he can to work in your best interest. It turns out my scary moving quote was exactly that — scary — actual cost coming in within $ 50 of the estimated quote.
$ 7,000 to move a modest one-​bedroom apartment is extremely high, at best, and was a big let-​down to have to shell out after my parents moved a three-​bedroom home from NY to Florida for about that same amount of money.
After the bill was paid I thought maybe we’ll get our money’s worth, then some…
When the delivery arrived at its destination we noticed that a lot of our boxes had caved-​in. This was due to our ENTIRE inventory of boxes being transported on their sides, and not on their bottoms. Of course, if we knew that the boxes would be stacked on their sides we would’ve packed them to accommodate that situation. Since we packed our boxes appropriately (as if to be stacked on top of one another, and not on their sides) this resulted in both spillage and damage. Since the boxes were all stacked on their sides, the very large and expensive bottle of soap that got smashed and spilled, trickled down the stack of boxes, making sure to drip into and pool in the bottom of every single box as it made its way to the bottom of the pile.
Luckily, the damaged items had no sentimental value and could easily be replaced. The spillage, however, caused enough of a mess that we had to dig through and inspect several boxes before being able to sign-​off on the delivery paperwork.
This is my third long distance move (my second with Atlas Van Lines), and by far this is the worst moving experience I’ve had. I never plan on using this small-​town and dishonest moving company ever again, and I certainly advise against anyone else doing so.

We where in a pinch and needed a moving company ASAP. I was so happy that they had free time the day that I needed them (BUT THERE WAS A REASON). When they arrived at my door I was pretty shocked to see that they had sent a kid (17) and an older smaller gentlman maybe in his 50’s. This is not the kind of movers I was expecting. Through out the day I had to listen to the kid complain about how hot he was and how heavy everything was. To be honest I could have moved things and lifted them easier and faster than these guys did.
On top of this we have a very expensive marble table that all through the day I had been telling them that when they where ready to move it my brother and I would help. Well they would not let us help! Once they got the table lifted I walked away (BIG MISTAKE) because they dropped it in the truck. When I walked out there they both had looks on thier face like they knew that they had done somthing wrong. The table completley split in half and appon arrival at our new location the corner was broker (the corner the kid was holding). All this said and done I did not pay for the extra coverage but on the aggreement it states «Coverage for loss and damage is limited to the Actual Cash Value of losses up to the abount of $ 20,000 unless the shipper signing this agreement inserts in the space below in his or her own handwriting another value. You many be charged for coverage provided other than 60 cents per pound per artical. SOOOO in this case the table weighs about 300lbs so we should have gotten about $ 180.00 the price that it is going to coast us to fix the table on our own.
Well when I called to speak with the owner he was rude and not willing to work with me and told me that his guys deneyed dropping the table. So it is his guys word against ours so needless to say they did not send us a check. I am sure I can take them to small claims court but whats the point.
NEEDLESS TO SAY!!! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Unless you want your stuff broken and to pay 550 for a 4 hour moving job that you could do on your own with a Uhaul in 2 hours.

After the move a gold necklace was missing. Just sayin’ we haven’t found my grandmothers necklace to this day. No blame, but just pick up all valuables before ANY moving company comes.

I was impressed with their customer service and how well they handled my fragile furniture. I received a shipment of furniture and household items from my grandmother. I was able to communicate with the driver on his way to my house so I would know when to expect my items. He also dropped them off after work so I didn’t have to miss a day of work. Thanks so much!

I have to concur with Dawn below — these guys are awful.
I will say, the front office woman was SUPER nice, but everyone else… look out.
I don’t expect a ton from movers, but Ernie’s managed to both lose AND break a bunch of things. Plus, they continually tried to add costs to the whole thing. I would call & discuss a price with the front office, but it was obvious no one was communicating with the movers, since the guys who showed up were never aware of anything that had been agreed upon.
There were several financial goofs that, had I not been paying very close attention, would have slipped by & never been spotted by anyone. I felt like I had to constantly be watching everything or they would just keep slipping more charges in.
Between the financial shadyness & the lost/​broken items, my experience with Ernie’s was pretty much of a disaster from start to finish. Moving is stressful enough as it is — it really sucks to have to deal with dishonest and incompetent people on top of everything else, especially when they are in charge of all your worldly possessions. Avoid!

The Wonderful Crew from Ernie’s Van and Storage arrived with big smiles and great attitudes and maintained both while meticulously packing up our house. My Husband and I spent much of his Naval Career dealing with moving companies… We have had good moves and nightmare moves… this crew… is the best, BAR NONE, that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. The care that was taken packing our belongings was meticulous! If ever you have precious Crystal & China that needs packing, ask for Eddie! All of them Brian, James, Eddie, Skyler and the others… were just superb!!! Thanks to Pam Sikes of Sikes Realty for suggesting them to me!!! Our move to Texas is going better than expected because of them!!!

i hired Ernie’s for a local move to move my furniture from my old house to the new. I found movers Russ and Phil to be exemplary. They arrived on time, were friendly, courteous, conscientious, and efficient. I appreciated Russell’s knowledge of wood flooring, and that he had the background & the initiative to advise me on the right type of padding to protect the floor from the furniture. He also lifted furniture so I could apply padding, and helped me cut some of this thick padding when I only had scissors. Phil was very sensitive to the logistics of moving large objects through narrow and twisting spaces (like stairs, and doorways), has a well developed sense of spatial relations plus great common sense, and obvious compassion. Both gentlemen have a good sense of humor which is important when working with people from all walks of life. Overall, the move went very well. If Russell and Phil represent the caliber of all of Ernie’s employees, I would call Ernie’s again.

Great from start to finish. Received two quotes. Liked Ernies rep Matt better than the other movers rep. Called Matt asked him if he could beat the other movers quote. He did — Skyler, Brian and Doug helped us with out move. They were fast, on time, friendly, responsible, polite and a pleasure to work with all around. The three of them hand carried our 100 year old piano up a broken set of stairs to get it into our «new/​old» house without a complaint. Nothing was broken, nothing was scratched — just a great experience all around. They also moved our 100 year old safe that weight in at 600 pounds! Thank you Ernies Van and Storage.

Anyone who calls a moving company saying they have need to move vintage Niagra beds upstairs should rightfully be hung up on. Cast iron motors that raise the foot and head? A vibrator motor too? Yup. This was my situation.
Moving Mom into my house was daunting but possible. I eat Spinach but seriously, these beds wouldn’t move. It took four of us to get them on the moving truck with a piano dolly and a ramp. I was advised to sell them and buy her a new bed. Research proved that was going to cost money. My girlfriend recommended Ernie’s. With rain in the forecast, I called them.
I was told they had a two hour minimum. My imagination went wild. I had some seriously heavy things I had been putting off moving around and this was my opportunity.
Alfonzo and Rick showed up with brute strength and accomplished the impossible. If you are organized, you can get so much accomplished! My mom is comfortable and I have a huge start on creating my guest house.

I’ve worked with Ernie’s a few times over the years and have no complaints. They are great!

My mum recently hired Ernie’s Van & Storage to help her move. They went all the way to Folsom and helped my mum move her things to a storage unit in the next town over, El Dorado Hills. My mum was in a pinch and hired these guys fairly last minute. They had no problem working on memorial day and no problem traveling so far from Grass Valley.
My mum and I had been working like dogs, packing her place up, and moving what we could of the misc. small stuff to storage. And then, right on time, Richy shows up. I swear, angels sang. These guys had such great energy; they were so friendly! They were fast, yet careful, and seemed to really know their stuff when it comes to efficient and safe moving.
Even when my mum changed her mind about the dining room table and chairs being packed into the truck, the guys were more than willing to remove the peices they had already packed. When we arrived at my mum’s storage, they even helped my mum move some things we had already packed into storage from it’s unit to the other one. They offered to help my mum even more, but she was already so impressed with them and felt they had done more than enough.
The guys seemed like real genuine and I am so pleased and appreciative of them. My mum said it was well worth the cost, which actually wasn’t bad for the distance they travelled and the amount they did for us.
I deffinately recommend these guys to anyone who’s looking for movers. My mum does too. :)

THE MOST DISHONEST BUSINESS EVER! I am a small business person in the same local area as Ernies. In my opinion, customers are to be treated with respect and every effort should be made to address complaints in a cordial, mutually cooperative way. My experience with Ernies, was absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced in 23 years of being in business for myself. Unfortunately, I wasnt savvy enough to realize I was dealing with sharks.
They state on their website «At Ernie’s Van & Storage we go to great lengths to keep our customers happy. If something isn’t right we want to know, so we can work to fix it.» What a load of Bull! I had numerous problems with them and their response was «We dont believe there were any problems» I went to their office to have the problems addressed, they refused to meet with me, later called the police and reported me for theft and fraud. When I tried to discuss with them the numerous overcharges on the bill they absolutely refused to address them, meet with me or acknowledge reality. Then, regardless of my good faith efforts, repeatedly asking to meet to discuss the discrepencies, they sued me.. I feel that they had substantially overcharged for what I would consider extremely poor service. Unfortunately, it was their word against mine as I was at my move by myself most of the day, and their group of excons that work for them showed up in court and lied through their teeth. They carry a lot of weight in this small town and I guess it paid off, since they won. Just as they have every other time they have sued their customers.
I had a witness, someone who bought a refridgerator from me, that they took a 20 minute break after only being at my home for one hour that was not deducted from the total bill (in the court records). Their worker also testified that the second truck they billed me the entire day for only had one large item in it, even though in the letters to me they stated it was completely full (in the court records) And, this is in direct violation of state law, which the judge completely ignored. I had a witness who had helped me move 90% of my belongings the day before Ernies arrived, yet I was still billed 60% of their original estimate, regardless of the fact that I had contacted them several days previous to the move requesting an new estimate (also in the court records). I have a neck injury and cannot lift my arms above my shoulders. I repeatedly asked them to accomodate this with very specific requests as to how things were stacked in the rooms. Instead they just ignored it and did whatever the hell they wanted. They thrashed, scratched or dented just about every piece of furniture. These things, among many others did not matter, the judge still found in their favor. After all, this is Nevada County, and Im one small person with a disability and very limited resource, they are backed by a large corporation and have been here forever. The entire case though is available as a public record, Ernies Van & Storage VS Dawn McGrath, small claims in Nevada County California. I would be happy to supply anyone with all the info, you would be shocked. I recommend that you review it for yourself. I do not feel the judges decision was either fair or just, they are probably buddies. But you as a consumer could see it all and make your own decision before ending up in the situation I did.
I feel I was slighted and want to protect others from having something similar happen to them. I have the right to tell my storybut Ernies has tried to stop me by threatening further lawsuits., but I will not shut up. I will do every thing in my power to have others know just how ruthless and what a rip off they are. I feel that most people would not want to do business with someone who handles customer complaints by reporting them to the police, after the customer has come into the office in good faith wanting to resolve the disagreement and with litigation when the client shows any effort at all to resolve the problem amicably. My efforts were completely disregarded in favor of litigation. But to make it even worse, Ernies leaned every single one of my bank accounts for the judgement amount, not just for the total owed but for 4 times the amount… TWO WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS. Ask yourself, what kind of person does that? That is not just business, its vicious. Watch your back and have plenty of witnesses around during your move if you do business with them.
NO CUSTOMER SHOULD EVER BE TREATED THIS BAD. I would never recommend this company to anyone. Others may not share my opinions, but please, do your research, its not difficult to find other complaints or people they have sued or threatened to sue.
