Save-​A-​Pet is one of the oldest and largest NO-​KILL rescues in all of Chicagoland. Since 1972, Save-​A-​Pet has successfully rescued and adopted out more than 40,000 lives, and expanded thousands of families with the love of a dog or cat. Operating a full-​time adoption center, we value the life and potential of every animal equally. We don’t discriminate with respect to age, health, temperament or breed when saving a life. Whether we’re saving 20 lives in one day, using our outdoor play yards to help heal the dogs, adopting out a kitten with Feline Leukemia, or adopting out a previously abused dog into a new family: Save-​A-​Pet is truly unique.

We offer year-​round volunteer programs for adults and youth. We conduct tours for youth groups who express an interest in animal welfare. Many children choose to raise money or collect supplies for our animals, in lieu of receiving birthday gifts. Save-​A-​Pet also conducts humane investigations, to help prevent animal cruelty in Lake County.

I love Save-​a-​Pet and everything they stand for. I have supported them for many, many years and they are always so caring for not only the animals in their care but for the people whom walk in to visit.
My business tries to donate as much as we can to this non-​profit organization to ensure the loving animals that are in need of a home can find a loving family they righteously deserve.
They have been in business for a very long time and no matter how much it costs them to operate, their no-​kill mission is always something that makes me so happy. They are caring, loving individuals (many are volunteers) who are simply there for the betterment of the dogs and cats in their care.
Adoption fees are extremely reasonable. They have animals of all ages and you are sure to find one to fit perfect in your home. I would recommend Save-​a-​Pet to absolutely anybody looking to adopt a dog or cat.

We were stuck between a rock and a hard place with a kitten with behavioral problems. No one would take it or adopt it. Our last option was to put it down. Save A Pet was our last hope to not have it destroyed. Thankfully they accepted the kitten and are working with it. The outlook is not so bleak. We thank them very kindly for helping to keep a beautiful animal alive. If you can please donate to them as they are not funded. Once again we are deeply grateful.

We have adopted three cats from Save-​A-​Pet, and they are wonderful pets and the staff were great to work with. The facility is kept very clean and the cat room had ample room for cats to move freely, and they seem to look after the health of the animals very closely. The staff in the cat room knew the cats very well and could answer all of our questions. The application/​interview were well done and it is clear the volunteers connect to the cats and want to see them in the best homes possible. I highly recommend Save-​A-​Pet to anyone looking to adopt a cat or dog.

This place has the worst customer service and these people clearly don’t want anyone to adopt the dogs. When looking for a dog we found three suited dogs and they immediately ruled out 2 for no reason. The last dog who was so sweet they talked about how horrible she was and how basically no human ever would be able to provide for her. The best part was this was based off of one family who adopted a month, a whole month. I’m sorry is a kennel better than a home because they seem to think so. Don’t ever waste your time there because they will do nothing but tell you how high maintenece and horrible each and every dog is. I have owned many dogs for many years and not once have I ever had a problem. Like I said before they clearly don’t want you to adopt a dog.

I have adopted three of the best dogs I’ve ever had from this shelter. I’ve never had a problem with them or process.
My most recent fur baby is from them and he will go down in history as one of the best.
Cat room makes me gag from the smell though– yuck!

My friend and I were made to feel like we were criminals when we went to look for a dog. The staff is suspicious and doubting on whatever we said. We both walked out feeling sort of creepy. I’m heading back to Orphans where adopters are warmly welcomed. I will never again try Save-​A-​Pet as too many radical volunteers with self righteous comments are running good pet owners out the door with their heavy handed questions and holy than thou attitude. Those poor dogs that are kept in really clean pens are developing bad habits by lack of good exercise and limited exposure to different people. Give me a healthy well adjusted dog who is covered in mud any day…

I like save a pet a lot more than orphans of the storm. I had recent visits at both places so I think I can fairly review them. Save a pet is a lot cleaner and spacious than orphans of the storm. Also, I liked that save a pet had tons of nice volunteers everywhere and they actually knew a ton about the animals. The staff at Save a pet didnt blow me away or anything, but I didn’t really have to deal with them much because I was just looking that day and the volunteers answered all my questions. I don’t know if save a pet walks their dogs more than at orphans of the storm but for some reason the dogs at save a pet were less barky and anxious to get out. I also liked the fact that the dogs at save a pet had beds and blankets to lay on instead of just newspaper like at orphans of the storm. The cat room at save a pet was also a lot less overcrowded than at orphans of the storm. So all in all my overall impression of save a pet is great. The ONLY con is that they don’t update their website frequently so when I went in I found out the dog I saw on their website was already adopted and they hadn’t taken her off their website yet. Also, they don’t add all their dogs to their website so if you find one that’s interesting while you’re there make sure to ask all the questions about the dog right then and there because you won’t be able to refer to the website when you get home.

I discovered this place on accident many years ago, stopping in for their rummage sale. I spent some time exploring the cat room, and one of the cats picked me. I visited several times a week to see my new found kitty friend, the staff noticed, and were very supportive of my adopting him, and his brother. Finally everything clicked into place at home, and I was able to bring the two boys home. I still go back now and then to see the new kitties, the staff is very kind and supportive, an treat the animals very well. I am very happy I found Save-​A-​Pet, and will continue to have a special place in my heart for them.

We followed a kitten for 6 weeks that we wanted to adopt. I went there with my 14 year old daughter to pick up the kitten but was told that because we de-​clawed our previous 3 cats that we would not be eligible for adoption. My daughter cried and I was humbled.

Save a pet is a great no kill animal shelter located in Grayslake, IL.
It is a non profit that is run mostly through the work of dedicated volunteers, they offer adoptions and fosters to a large variety of cats, dogs, puppies and kittens. They also house and offer special needs pets on a foster basis– meaning they pay for and take care of your fostees medical bills as long as you give them the attention and home they need/​deserve.
Save a Pet will also give you a large variety of information that can assist you comforting your special needs pet– should you adopt someone with a need that you haven’t dealt with before (ie: FIV).
It is a nice, welcoming environment with decently priced adoptions that come with basically everything you’d initially need from a vet anyway.
I definitely recommend them both for their mission and their amazing ability to stay true to said mission.

Everyone was really nice and understanding that I was upset over losing my cat. I left that afternoon with another wonderful cat.
The cost was a little over $ 100, maybe $ 120(??). This includes spay/​neutering, shots, deworming, microchip, small bag of Science Diet food… I don’t know the price for dogs, but it is more. You can check their website and see photos of many the cats and dogs that are available for adoption and fostering.
