Only been here once & it was very good. I felt like I was on a boat when we walked in. The nautical theme & the porthole windows give you that«Hey I’m On A Boat» feeling. All they needed was Isaac from the LoveBoat behind the bar mixin’ drinks. The staff was very friendly & even gave my little nephew some crayons & pictures to color while we waited on our order which didn’t take long at all. They have an extensive menu with tons to choose from. I opted to be adventurous & try something I have never eaten before… Frog Legs. I ordered the fried catfish & frog leg combination plate. The catfish was excellent & so were the frog legs, both cooked perfectly… And no, frog legs do not taste like chicken, they tasted just like frog legs, a sweet meat with a similar texture as chicken. I would definitely order this again. Everyone in our party gave high praise for the dishes they ordered, especially the popcorn shrimp. You will definitely be stuffed if you can finish what is on your plate. We will definitely be going back.

Mediocre and overpriced is the best I can say. At least they do clean with the booths with bleach, ruined my new blue shirt.

The latest false advertising from this place! If you look at the picture on the menu at their«seafood» buckets, one has lobster claws clearly in the picture. In the description it says«lobster tails» which I will bet dollars to donut holes are brought in frozen! They are still serving«chopped and formed scallops» and callling them«deep sea scallops» again, if your scallops look TOO perfect,(all the same exact shape and size) SEND them back! $ 14.99 for an order of REAL scallops is not bad, but I refuse to pay it for that crap! I will NOT being going back. period. By the way I grew up less than an hour from the Maine coast and know good seafood when I eat it! This place doesn’t have it!

THECOUPONSWERE A MISSPRINTNOT A BAITANDSWITCH!!! Captains Galley is in NOWWAY responsible for the error in the printed coupons. It is not a bait and switch and missprints happen in print media but you can not hold the business reponsible for that.

Captain’s Galley used to be my favorite for mediocre, fried seafood; I do get that craving every-so-often. However, the restaurant owner has chosen to use a blatant«bait-and-switch» advertising ploy to bring in additional customers. Coupons arrived in a weekly mailer offering a «buy one, get one free» entrée deal with the purchase of two drinks, and a «buy one, get one half price» deal. Upon arriving at the restaurant, the server informed me that the«printer made a mistake,» and neither of these coupons would be honored. In fact, the only coupon they would honor was a «free appetizer with purchase of two entrees» deal.(The server agreed with me, that this is a bad business practice, but there was nothing the server could do.) I find the«printer error» story dubious, as I’ve never known a printer that did not send out proofs for approval before printing a mass advertisement. At any rate, the customer should not be shortchanged because of someone’s error, without some form of compensation. I, for one, won’t be back!

Captain’s Galley doesn’t merely remind you that the house specialty is seafood inasmuch as it bludgeons you over the head with this fact. The blue-and-white checked tablecloths are adorned with anchors, the windows resemble large portholes, and nautical paraphernalia graces the wall. This lack of subtly extends to the food as well. The Fisherman’s Platter — a fried seafood combo — came with almost everything dumped unappealingly on a plate. Fortunately, for the most part, the food didn’t taste as bad as it looked. I had a craving for popcorn shrimp and these hit the spot. The complimentary hush puppies were crisp and tasty. The fried fish(white pollock) was a little bland, but it thankfully wasn’t dried out. On the other hand, the deviled crab was unremarkable, and the overly chewy clam strips were among the worst I’ve ever had. After«nautical,» the word that best sums up Captain’s Galley is «big.» The restaurant is a large space with ample seating and different seating areas to accommodate one’s wishes(outside, back booth, seat at the bar, etc.). The menu is impressively large, too. As is expected for an establishment of this type, you can find several kinds of seafood(shrimp, crab, clams, oysters, and scallops) and fish(tilapia, pollock, catfish, and flounder) prepared several different ways(boiled or fried with different seasonings). There is also a decent assortment of land fare, including steaks, salads, chicken, sandwiches, and pasta. This is a place that truly tries to offer something for everyone. To round out the picture, servers were friendly and attentive and prices were reasonable. My combo platter ran $ 12.95, a good value for the amount of food. Opting for crab legs will cost you more, but you can eat well here for $ 10 or less. Captain’s Galley’s maritime kitsch isn’t without its charm, and there is enough on the menu to merit another look, but the food is too inconsistent to make it a sure(or is that shore?) bet.

Went here for lunch on Sunday.(They open at 12PM) and dined inside. The menu is pretty extensive for the typical seafood of the south places. Décor is bad but I guess they wanted it to resemble more of an old ship/tiki bar.(If you can imagine that) All in all the food(Jumbo Shrimp plate) was flavorful and reasonably priced for lunch. Servcie was excellent and spot on. I can’t remember wanting for anything. You can sit at the bar and order a beer/cocktail/wine or even order drinks at your table. Hush-puppies are served«unlimited» and come to the table shortly after you are seated. Take-Out is also available for those of you wanting the grab and go options. I wouldn’t go here on date night but a casual lunch here is definitely acceptable.

The only place in Greensboro that serves crawfish! Amazing crab legs, scallops, lobster, and wonderful spicy craw fish! This is our place from now on! Great atmosphere, service and priced right. Amazing homemade desserts!

The Captain’s Galley isn’t going to win any awards for décor – think Enchanted Tiki Room sans the talking birds. However, some of the food, if you choose well, is really outstanding. The menu features a variety of seafood prepared lots of different ways. The boiled and steamed dishes are excellent. Our visit started with a huge«starter» portion of boiled crawfish that were out of this world – spicy, cooked just to done. We also started with fried pickles that were good. The sizes of the starters were large enough that we might have just made those the meal. But we soldiered on… Two of us were happy with half-pound portions of peel-and-eat steamed shrimp for our entrees. The shrimp were large, a little bit sweet, and again, just done. Two who ordered fried meals found the fish to be hit and miss(some good pieces, some not so good). Although we did not partake, the restaurant offers a full bar.

Came back for another try. Calamari and the she crab soup were fantastic. The hush puppies were good too. The cleaning fluid smell was reduced. Good improvements.

We ordered lunch from here today, and as usual, we tried a number of different items, all fried of course — well, except for the slaw. This is pretty solid Southern Fried Seafood(I can say that because I am from the South) — the best here is not broiled(though you can get it that way), the best here is not boiled(though you can get it that way), and the best here is not steak, chicken, pasta, or a sandwich(but you can get those here if you choose) — the best here is fried seafood. The 3 item Combo we ordered included Jumbo Shrimp(and they are Jumbo, but still fried up tender), Clam Strips, and Oysters($ 15.99 — not exactly cheap, especially as a lunch choice), and the 2 item Combo consisted of Popcorn Shrimp and Salt Water Trout, with the skin on($ 13.99 — see above comment). Each combo came with hushpuppies, choice of slaw(they offer regular mayo based, or Tortilla Slaw — seriously), and a side. The Jumbo Shrimp fried up nice and tender, surprisingly so considering their enormous size — the portion included in the combo was decent, not great. The Oysters were excellent, but the numbers was even less than the shrimp — rather disappointing. The Clam Strips were very, very nice, and the best portion size of the 3 items. As a child of the 50’s, I still remember the famous Clam Strips of the Howard Johnson’s chain — these are very similar — I like them — I will have them again. The Popcorn Shrimp were good, not great, with a decent portion. The Salt Water Trout(these are filets with the skin on) were exceptional, and the largest portion of any of the 5 items in the 2 combos. They were fried perfectly, came out sweet, tender, and moist. The only way they could have been better would be if they were offered bone-in — the only bone-in here is Catfish and Frog Legs(I would guess it is rather hard to filet a frog leg, but then again, I’ve never actually tried). The French Fries were good, but not outstanding; the hushpuppies, on the other hand, were very good, large in size and portion. The Onion Rings were pretty good — not freshly cut or hand-battered, but pretty good. The slaw(the regular slaw) was decent, a touch on the sweet side, chopped kind of fine. This place is a little different than most local seafood shacks — it is a little more hip, large open-air seating area, full bar with daily drink specials, a more varied menu(seafood and otherwise), and rather loud rock music piped in. They do have a separate area for takeout, always a good thing. But in the end, it is the quality of the food, and the preceived value that will matter. The seafood is solid(some items more so than others), but the value is a little off — especially in the lack of reasonably priced lunch specials — and the combos are high, and the portions are not equal — very few Oysters, for example. Greensboro doesn’t have a lot of great fried seafood choices, so this place may do well — we’ll see.

Had dinner with friends here a few weeks after they opened. I ordered the captains feast and my food didn’t have much flavor at all. My fish was greasy, but I believe it was the type of fish I ordered. My girlfriend ordered flounder and her fish was not greasy at all. It was flakey and white inside. Everyone else enjoyed their meal much more than I did. I guess it was what I ordered. I will say that our server was top notch. I’m giving them a three mainly because everyone elses food was good. I will go back and give them another shot. Oh and the prices were very reasonable.

Several folks told me to try this place for it’s fresh seafood. I know fresh North Carolina seafood, the coast is about the only place I will order seafood, because I know what to expect. I tried the Captain’s Galley, very flashy, some what tacky décor, this is basically an over priced fish camp. The flounder and very small popcorn shrimp was just mediocre, very bland., need seasoning.

Ok had deviled crab and popcorn shrimp lunch today … it was Meh … I have had much better locally at some of the old mom and pop places in the area! Crab needed something it was bland. shrimp was bland… fries came out NO salt — NO seasoning at all … hush puppies were good … but needed some seasoning too … OH yeah as an FYI for the manager /owner I was seated in the booth across from the kitchen galley door … NEVERNEVER do again what you did today by calling all of the waitresses in to the galley do an inspection where the customers can see you and hear you … That is bad management practice and yes I am reading you out in a public space — because that is what you did to your wait staff!!! You need to be observant of how you present yourself when you think no one is watching because some one always is watching whether you realize it or not!!! Oh and to my waitress Brittany you did a great job !!!

Had a great dinner! Casual atmosphere, but really nice, and comfortable. Very large menu, enough for all tastes. We don’t eat fried(anything) but the broiled menu looked really good. We had the 1.5lb shrimp. and the 1 crab legs, which we split. Each came with a whole ear of corn, and red potatoes. The crab was the best I have had in a very long time… not overcooked at all, and very fresh. The spices they used on the shrimp was very tasty. Also got oysters on the half shell, very fresh, and good. The only complaint I have is the cocktail sauce… Don’t know, but I think there were pickles in it. it was really not very good at all. Had to make my own with ketchup and horseradish(which was fine).ate out on the patio, and had a wonderful waitress. Very personable. We will definitely go back and spread the word how good it was.

Delicious. It is a must try. The atmosphere is casual nautical and feels like you are at the beach. Beer, wine and alcohol served with beautiful Tiki bar. There is gorgeous covered outside seating with huge fireplace for the cooler evenings. Has large selection of seafood entrees cooked to your desire. All you can eat Queen crab and shrimp on Thursday. The desserts are scratch homemade. Must try. Good for groups and private dinners. Great ambiance for romantic dinner or just hanging out.
