History

Established in 1974.

Edward McKay Used Books and More was established in 1974 in Fayetteville NC by an ex-​Army officer who realized he couldn’t afford to establish a library, so he did the second-​best thing. From modest beginnings that included Canada Dry Ginger Ale crates, buildings originally designed to function as chicken coops, and a store that the founder built himself, Edward McKay Used Books & More has grown to four stores across North Carolina. An inventory that at first was books and only books now includes iPods, video games, movies, music, vinyl, and even e-​readers. Though a lot has changed in the book industry over the last 35+ years, Edward McKay Used Books & More still stands for cheap books, funky attitude, and a continuing desire to feed your head.

When it comes to this bookstore, I have yet to walkout empty-​handed. First, I spend my time roaming around to check out various areas and book genres. Then, I spend lots of time searching for a good read in my favorite section. Sometimes, I have so many books, I have to sit and review books for a simple process of priority and elimination. Nevertheless, I am always pleased with my purchases!

Looking for used books of any genre? DVDs? CDs? Vinyl lps? Video games? If yes, McKay’s is a must stop. While their prices have gone up some over the years, they’re still more affordable than buying new books, music, etc.

I’ve been a loyal Ed McKay customer for 15 years. Recently, I loaded up a bunch of stuff to sell and drove to the store. Upon lugging my three boxes in, I was told they were only offering store credit and not offering cash. The disinterested and apathetic employee said she didn’t really know what was going on but that they weren’t offering cash during the month of December. She said they might start to offer cash in January but she wasn’t sure. There is no notification on their website about this change. I wouldn’t waste your time on this place like I did.
Also, their prices have risen astronomically for used books. They charge $ 8 – 10 for a book I can buy used on Amazon and have shipped to me for $ 4 total.

This is a pretty nice place. It has both used and new books, movies, CDs, record players, and even some toys and various nick nacks some of which are related to a certain theme such as Star Wars. You can find some pretty interesting books here, some of which are rare. They also have some great discount books for a dollar. As a consumer this place is great.
I can’t vouch for the rate of returns here. However my experience here has been great. I found a nice assortment of Stephen King books and even found a great version of Beowulf in the bargain bin. I look forward to visiting this place again.

I’m getting tired of bringing books there and having them say they won’t take them back even though I bought most of them there I just put in the bag 28 books they took three This is the third time this is happened I think we need a new Edward McKay town!

This used to be our favorite Edward McKay’s to go to both for selling and for buying books. However, over the past 2 years their prices have gone from reasonable to are-​you-​kidding-​me?! We had hoped this might be a temporary thing, but their prices have just continued to rise. C’mon, here — we’re talking Used Books.
To make matters worse, apparently they have a new manager who, to be polite, is a jerk. When we brought in several boxes of books to sell several of the other people behind the desk who we had dealt with before were very obviously (and nervously) deferring to him with any questions. He thought our books looked too ‘new’ and asked us if we had receipts for all of them. Seriously? Why not just accuse me of stealing outright then. (And this after I handed you my driver’s license so the sale can be documented for any auditors?)

Just a cool used book store. Huge selection of books, along with some used vinyl LPs, and dvd’s. Buying used books is a very economical way to satiate your reading and Edward McKay’s has a great selection to choose from. The prices are really reasonable. We bought a number of books today ranging in price from $ 2 to $ 15 with most in the $ 4 — $ 5 range.

Now don’t get me wrong, this place is the mecca for all your used books, records, video games, dvd/​cds wants and needs.
This used to be one of my favorite places to go to. before it became insanely popular, prices skyrocketed, never able to find the books I’m looking for because there’s always way too many in the stacks…
This place is great if you don’t have your heart set on anything in particular, cause you most likely won’t find it. Time can definitely fly as you spend hours looking through the whole store.

This is a good used bookstore, with some interesting old titles, though the prices seem a little high. The ambiance is not the greatest – the last trip was marred by parent-​children control issues, and it doesn’t seem to have any amenities other than shelves and shelves of books. As for its niche vs. Amazon, independents (like Scuppernong and Pages Past), B&N, and the library, this seems to be mainly a place to get rid of old books and pick up «new» ones – but it is certainly not a place to linger.

I’ve only been to the one in Winston but this one is HUGE. Vinyl selection kinda sucked, but they had the exact book I looked for where as the Winston store it’s a hit or miss. Glad I stopped by.

One of the best used book stores I’ve ever been to. While it does not have a café or much comfy seating, it does have an unparalleled selection for a used book store. They pay reasonable prices for books, and also offer used text books at a reasonable rate.
I also very much like their electronics section. Not only do they offer used video games, DVD’s, and CD’s, but a decent selection of more esoteric items such as TI-​83 calculators and iPods as well.
This place is definitely one of the gyms of Greensboro, and not to be missed by any book lovers.

Oh I love Ed Mckay. I am from Greensboro and thus have been coming here for years. We now live in D.C., but we make it a point to stop in most of the times we come back to visit. They have rearranged and organized the store, and have expanded it, which is fantastic! It used to be much more cramped. We had a credit that we forgot to bring, which always makes me angry, but it’s not like we will never be back.
They have a great vinyl collection, and I purchased quite a bit on this last trip. The husband grabbed a cd, and strangely, no books were purchased on this visit. The staff is usually pretty friendly and you could spend hours in here just browsing. Definitely one of the gems of Greensboro.

They’ve done a great job with the new layout and the new sections. This place is very clean, organized, and easy to maneuver. The part of the place where I wasn’t 100% pleased was the customer service. I may have just had bad luck the last few times I was there but they weren’t the best. The guy that checked us out was very rude, lacked in personal hygiene, and seemed very aloof. I’m not of fan of the staff that I have had contact with.

I love Ed McKay!
The only thing is that I wish their science, philosophy, and non fiction section was bigger, but I’m not complaining too much. I have found so many thought provoking books there for cheap!
Best place to go for cheap books, games, music, and movies.
I’m not too keen on how they purchase items from local individuals though. Sometimes they will give you cash, other times you will get store credit.

I saw they recently renovated, but I haven’t been back to Greensboro to see it for myself. Would def be worth a trip!

I lived in Raleigh for three years and I love that location so I was excited to have an Ed McKay nearby when I relocated to Greensboro.
The selection of books and DVD/​Blurays are decent and they do split merchandise into specific and helpful genres. The prices are pretty good too.
Why 1⁄5 stars? The staff (at least the one’s I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with) are horrible! One employee was so unbelievably rude and was unwilling to exchange a defective NES game I purchased, even though I had a receipt and was within the time frame. I haven’t gone back since then and I will not. I used to go to every week.

I don’t like that they sold Nintendo 64 games but have no way to test them at the store before you buy them. Not all of us live locally & I couldn’t get a game I’ve wanted for this reason. The guy who helped me was very friendly and agreed with me not spending money on a game I couldn’t check until I got to my system 1,000 miles away from there, where I’d be stuck if the game didn’t work.
Retailers, if you’re going to sell games from a system, have a way for people to test them before buying so you don’t lose sales to people like me who don’t live in the area. Even if I lived in a different part of the state or a few hundred miles away, that would still be a serious cost to me in time and gas money.
There are a lot of items, though & if you aren’t looking for something super rare or hard to find you might have more luck.
