Fluffy, warm, crispy on the outside pupusas with melted cheese inside and some simply delicious, though not sweet, coleslaw on top. Add a couple of beers to that and you’ve got a great meal for a great deal of $ 13.00.(This is for 3 pupusas and 2 beers) I need to come up with a jingle for this place now. Tiny place. Only 34 tops. Remember — cash only. If you forget, just go right across the parking lot to the gambling joint and hit up the ATM there. Oh, and note the contrast between the two places. CLOSEDMONDAY

This little pupuseria is tucked into a strip-mall, surrounded by gambling joints, and hair salons that offer hairdos most places don’t offer anymore. It’s small and clean as a whistle. A soft spoken woman took our order at the counter, and we noticed a sign requesting cash only. I walked across to a gambling joint to get cash from the ATM. Pupusa is a Salvadorian dish made from thick corn tortillas that are usually stuffed with combinations of cheese, pork and beans. It is usually served with a fermented and spicy coleslaw called curtito, and hot salsa. Since we don’t eat pork, we order Pupusas de Queso: Pupusas stuffed with warm Quesillo cheese. After several minutes rattling pots and pans in the little kitchen our order arrived. The pupusas were hot, light, and crisp little corn cakes enveloping perfectly melted Quesillo. The curtito was slightly tart and spicy. The salsa perfectly complemented the curitto. It was a wonderful lunch, and perfectly cheap. I don’t know if pupusas will ever supplant the taco, but after eating tacos five meals in a row; which I’ve been known to do, a pupusa is a nice alternative.
