History

Established in 2009.

Steve Kaye & Debbie Ballou met at I.H.O.P., where she was a waitress and he was her busboy. Steve finally mustered the courage to ask Debbie out and they married a year from the date of their first kiss. Four kids and three grandchildren later, they are still going strong. They opened their first restaurant, Kaye’s Friends & Family, in North Branford, CT in 1985. When Kaye’s Friends & Family closed, and after 25 years in the restaurant business, they both decided to take a break and pursue other careers. But after a trip to the gastropubs of London and the cafes of Paris in the spring of 2008, as well as several years of visits to New York to see their children, where they frequented some of the city’s best wine bars, they could no longer ignore their true passion. And so, after a long talk at their kitchen table over a bottle of wine, the idea for Ballou’s Wine Bar was born.
