Half Moon Bay Lodge

We love the Half Moon Bay Lodge. Room was clean and bed was comfortable. We especially love their breakfast of make your own waffles. Breakfast includes waffles, yogurt, fruit, some meats and cheese, hard boiled eggs, muffins as well as coffee, tea, and juice. A great place on the coast.

I celebrated me and my wife’s wedding anniversary here in half moon bay and we stayed here. It’s was amazing the rooms were very nice. The fireplace kept us warm all night long. Lupe the front desk check in was so kind and took care of all our needs and had recommended us a great selection of the hotels house wine it was divine. I will be back in the summer !

Nice enough hotel, but if you go it would be best to ask to stay on the second floor. It was impossible to sleep with the noise from above. The first night we were offered a bottle of wine when we asked if anything could be done about the children above stomping around after midnight. We said no thank you to the wine, just please stop the noise. The noise did stop after about 15 minutes. The second night the noise was persistent past 10pm. We again asked if the noise could be subdued. We were again offered a bottle of wine and a $ 100 credit for the room. We did not want the wine, but said we would appreciate the credit to our account. We had paid just over $ 450 for two nights.
The noise did stop again within about 15 minutes, which we appreciated. But we never received a credit as promised. We would not recommend this hotel in the future, but do appreciate the staff attempting to accommodate something they can’t control.

I’m laying her in bed, hours before I wanted to wake, up listening to what sounds like a herd of elephants walk around in the room above us. Literally creaking, stomping, squeaking. Back and forth back and forth. It’s like living in a bad cheap apartment complex. What is worse is it already felt like a bad cheap apartment complex before this moment. Our first room smelled like stale dog but they graciously moved us. The new room smelled too, just not like dog so it was bearable (and plus, we had no other options).
The walls are paper thin. The layout is like a roadside motel (rooms face parking lot), as I said it smells old, our comforter had stains on it (which seemed to be washed but still felt unclean). The noise– oh god the noise! If you still want to stay here after reading this, demand a room on the second floor so you can be the one driving someone else crazy.
We paid nearly $ 300 for this room and it’s the cheapest, crappiest hotel I have stayed Ian in a long time. I’m actually angry about my stay.

This is a 5 STAR Hotel! Lupe at the front desk was very helpful and accommodated us perfectly. Would recommend this hotel to everybody!

I’m honestly taken aback my the fingernail on the sink, the hair I found in the bathtub, the toothpaste smear on the side of the sink.
Also, it’s hard not to notice the people furtively smoking in the parking lot which happens to be in front of the hotel.
The front desk staff are friendly but at these rates I expected CLEAN, not icky.
It’s only the first night so there is a possibility of increasing the rating.

Lovely! Welcoming lobby, friendly staff. There is a Keurig with coffee, tea and hot chocolate as well as a plate of warm cookies. Our room was upstairs. It was clean, nicely appointed and fairly quiet. It would have been perfect if the adults staying in the room next door would have kept their voices down when standing outside of our door. The bed was very comfortable. I thought it was kind of odd to only have square pillows but they were comfortable. Wifi is strong everywhere. Easy check in and check out. Breakfast was a typical hotel breakfast — pastries, cereal, yogurt, fruit, waffle maker, cheese and some lunch meat, juices, milk and coffee. We didn’t get a chance to hang out at the pool. It was a quiet area of town, and the breeze coming in the balcony door was absolutely divine. We would absolutely stay again!

LOVED this lodge! Wonderful breakfast near the pool and courtyard. The landscaped grounds have lots of lovely pathways and shaded lawn – and plenty of room for my two dogs to have their space too! Especially, the staff (both in lobby and the maintenance man!) were very warm and friendly. 3 minutes to Poplar Beach (dog friendly) and super close to the coastal trail.

We booked a block of rooms for the weekend for our wedding and everything was great! The staff was awesome to work with leading up to the event, and they always quickly responded to any questions I had. The rooms were very clean and the grounds are lovely. We were even able to use the courtyard to take some wedding photos. We also loved being able to use the fireplace in our room on our wedding night!
We did have a few complaints from a couple of our guests that the housekeeping crew came very early on Saturday morning, but those issues were addressed individually.
Overall we had a great stay.

The Mister and I celebrated our first anniversary here this weekend. It’s super close to home, no traffic, yet far enough to feel like a getaway. Conveniently located near gas stations, super markets, Starbucks and such. Also close to downtown touristy stuff. The property is on a golfcourae, so it feels secluded. The grounds are lush and well taken care of. Beautiful fountains and terracotta pots throughout the property. Has a hacienda feel on the outside.
We loved the outdoor amenities very much. The pool and hot tub area have a garden lounge, with comfortable couches and a fireplace. Also tables available for outdoor dining or drinks (that you provide yourself). They provide clean warm towels poolside. Cute benches throughout the gardens. Not crowded at all, very quiet. We enjoyed the space all to ourselves this weekend.
The room was clean, big, bed was comfortable. Better than I expected. We stayed in room 237, an upper level room. Was told by hotel staff it’s the only room with a whirlpool tub. Glasses in the room where covered in plastic, so you know they are clean. Toiletries where high end with a pleasant smell. I will say, the cielingfan in there made a lot of noise at night. We just turned it off, not too big of a deal. In room fridge, comfy chair and ottoman. Nice desk if your gonna sneak some work in. The room was way bigger than I thought. High cielings, very comfortable.
I could not in good conscious give this place 5 stars because it could use some better treats for guests. I thought I saw on trip advisor that they host a smores bar at the outdoor fireplace in the evenings. We saw the staff person light the fireplace and got excited. We hung around a while, no snacks in sight. called the front desk to inquire and the girl laughed as to say, «yeah right.» #strikeone
Then, when we went to check out the free continental breakfast, we were dissapointed again. Tired apples and bananas, not so fresh bread, hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, juice and coffee. They did have a waffleaker, but no fruit to top it. Being in a farming area I would expect to see some of the local faire. The food was not inviting or exciting. #strike2
Lastly, at checkout (they were nice enough to give us a late checkout when we asked, that was cool of them) we looked forward to the freshly baked cookies… and found nothing. #strike3
We have stayed in pismo and carmel where hotels provide guest with wine, snacks, smores, cookies and it’s always a nice touch. This place missed the mark.
All in all a great time, I recommend it. Bring your own snacks and drinks (there’s a small fridge in each room), safeway is right down the road. Or maybe stop at a fruit stand on your way back home to settle your craving of local goodness.
Prepare in advance and enjoy!

I stayed here back in February of last year with my girlfriend for our anniversary. Check-​in was easy and the girl at the front desk was friendly. We had very high expectations for the lodge upon seeing pictures and reviews, and when we got into the room it was exactly as expected. Spacious, clean king bed, clean bathroom, shower works well. This was a good room.
The pool/​spa/​sauna area is just wonderful. I don’t know how busy it is on weekends, but during the week, there are very few people in the pool and spa and at times you have it all to yourself. The spa is located under a gazebo fixture and it’s really nice.
The sauna is a nice added feature, I had never been in one before this trip.
There is a Popeyes and a (I think it’s a Safeway) a 3 minute drive away and the beach is also a short drive away as well. Very convenient.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone, couples in particular. It’s extremely romantic and will make a great Valentine’s day or anniversary excursion.

The Half Moon Bay Lodge is a 3 star motel. Part of the 18 hole golf course at the nearby Ritz Carlton runs behind the lodge, and beyond that is the beach. The atmosphere made up for the 3 star quality for us.
The lodge has two stories with all hotel rooms facing outside. There isn’t an elevator, so if you have any mobility issues, make sure you get a room on the first floor. They don’t have room service nor a mini-​bar or snack bar, but coffee is given for each room. There are bottles of Voss bottled water at $ 5 for the tall and $ 3 for the short.
The bathroom products are Philosophy. There is a hair dryer in the bathroom. It was a surprise to find a shoe mitt and q-​tips among the toiletries.
In the closet after a few days, we discovered an ironing board but most importantly bathrobes, which would’ve been nice to have been told about when we checked in.
We didn’t use the pool, but we saw it and the jacuzzi. The area was clean and looked well cared for.
My friend and I shared a room with queen beds. They were comfortable and we slept fine. The pillows were short and way too soft. I piled 2 on top of each other and had almost enough proper support. They put us in a room at the far end of the complex which was weird since the place appeared more than half empty.
There is a lot of parking available.
A free breakfast came with our Expedia deal, so I don’t know if they give that to everyone who stays there or not. The breakfast was served 7 – 10 am and came with cold cereal, hard boiled eggs, make your own waffles, bagels, ham and yogurt. Milk, OJ and water were offered for drinks. Pretty basic but can’t complain about free. We ate it twice in the week we were there and ate out the rest of the time.
We arrived late, and the guy who checked us in was kind, although tired. He didn’t have any recommendations for us on places to get food that time of night, not even a pizza place that would deliver, so that wasn’t helpful. The gal who checked us out (no fast checkout here) was overly cheery for the am and was dressed in a uniform compared to the polo the guy was wearing when we checked in. The one person I saw during the breakfast buffet was cleaning up and didn’t speak a word.
Since we were there in December, our room came with a 3′ artificial Christmas tree with a couple pine cones and lights. However, when my friend went to plug it in, we discovered the plugs had been chopped off. So much for having a tree.
If I’m ever in the area again, I may stay here, but most likely I would pick something new for the variety and also that has better accomodations.

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night as a gift, and a quick get-​away recently.
So, the location of this place is really great! To be honest, no need to actually stay in half moon bay because everything is VERY easy to drive to off highway 1.
Loved the lobby. They had a real christmas tree up, and it smelled amazing! It was a sparse tree, but it smelled really nice and it made the lobby very homey. We got a room on the far end of the building, which I think is the best as in the morning as we were having breakfast, we overheard a couple that had some noise complaints and we did not have any problems at all with the noise.
The room was clean, but kind of sparse. No paintings or nice décor in the actual room. Bathroom is older, and I thought kind of tacky tiling around the bathtub, but I love the mini philosophy bottles. Really nice brand for the bath products they give you.
Bed — very comfortable. No complaints about our king bed. Our room had a keurig, no fireplace in ours though.
One thing we did NOT like was the doors open to the outside, so like other reviewers said, it kind of feels like a motel, which you are not expecting when a place calls themselves a lodge.
Breakfast: decent, probably on par with Marriott Residence Inn breakfasts with oatmeal, waffle makers (they had a gingerbread mix that i didn’t try), and peet’s coffee.
I normally stay at Marriott’s, and this was a step down from it. I can’t say anything about the price as this was a gift to us.
As an aside, don’t just stay in half moon bay when you are there, drive up north and the views are way better than just a half moon bay beach!

We were greeted by a female staff member who was very courteous and polite. She was extremely helpful by giving information and even made a dinner reservation for us. Our room was huge, over looking the golf course, with vaulted celings, beautiful built in book cases, over sized bath towels and high end bedding. Not to mention it was very clean.
We were nicely surprised with the variety of food offered at breakfast too.
We will return.
I loved that this little secret located near the Ritz Carlton has the feel of an old Spanish Villa.

Pros: Clean and large room, convenient location (right by the golf course, Ritz Carlton Hotel and close to downtown HMB), decent continental breakfast (especially with the waffle maker and eggs), nice and friendly staff, gym room, swimming pool and hot tub, ample free parking. I was able to get a room from a last minute booking with a rate comparable to the Marriott Courtyard’s.
Cons — No elevators; if you have heavy luggage this could be annoying to haul it all the way up the stairs..

I like this place. Get a deluxe fireplace room – if other reviews are to be believed, it sounds like some of the standard rooms aren’t as nice.
I have stayed in two different upstairs fireplace rooms. Both were spacious, well-​lit, and clean, with comfy beds. The décor is simple, not exactly modern or hip, but elegant. Fireplace burns real wood with the standard bag of kindling/​log provided – all you have to do is light it (and hope it works on the first try).
There is a small golf course right out back which provides a natural feel and a pretty view. Pool and hot tub are not bad. Breakfast is continental plus – cold cuts with cubes of cheddar, granola/​yogurt parfaits, and waffle makers in addition to the usual cereal and such. Often there is also a flavored batter, like pumpkin or red velvet waffles. Not bad!
And yes, service is excellent. Ask for Terry when you call. He is a total pro and will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Thanks, Terry!
Finally, try booking through your phone; there are often mobile deals that get you a pretty good price break.

Incredible Hacienda style lodge. Very NW California-​like. Rooms were excellent. No bar on site which was a bit odd considering it was a resort lodge, but great stay nonetheless.

Stayed here with my family for 3 nights 9÷26÷14 and had a horrible experience. First of all, the front office staff are great. If the review was just about them they would receive 5 stars. They really tried hard to make it an enjoyable stay but in the end, couldn’t overcome the numerous other negs. The parking spaces are very short and quite narrow. If you have anything other than a compact car you will be snuggled up against other people’s doors and mirrors. Serious potential for vehicle damage here. There are no elevators, which seems acceptable due to it’s spanish mission style layout but be forewarned, they have NO dollies to help unload and transport your luggage to your room… and if you’re on the second floor you’re SOL. The food served in the a.m. by staffers is of marginal quality and they don’t adhere to basic rules of hygiene. My wife and I witnessed a staffer cough into her hand while handling food and then continue on like nothing happened. Thankfully we didn’t get sick! There’s also no trays to take food back to your room for the sleepy heads that can’t make it to breakfast. The rooms themselves are of La Quinta Inn quality and we paid $ 300/​night while there. Incredible rip off! The carpet was so dirty if we walked around with bare feet they would turn black. Multiple housekeeping issues occurred that we found to be pretty nasty. I posted 6 pictures to help demonstrate. 1) neglected corners in the bathroom showed grime, cobwebs and i killed one spyder that was cruising around the bathroom 2) someone’s flip flops were hanging out under the furniture 3) someone’s dirty sock was hanging out in the bedside table, 3) debris (shredded wheat, pen, gum, pens) from under the pull out sofa was collected after we complained but was then left on the side table by housekeeping instead of being disposed of 4) black flaky debris was all over the sheets on the pullout sofa when we went to set it up for our oldest daughter 5) my wife broke her toe on the metal bed frame corner as she was walking passed the bed because it sticks out so far right at a corner in the room, creating a very narrow passage way for unprotected toes.
Save your money, save your valuable time for a better experience somewhere else. The outside is very deceiving because it looks so nice on their website and in person. But it’s a flipping joke. We would have been better off staying at the Comfort Inn. At least that way we wouldn’t have felt ripped off and grossed out.

So, a year later and the best thing about this stay, hands down, was the 2d floor room: comfortable and quiet. Beautiful view of garden and one of the Country Club fairways.
The flip side of the stay? We had a room w/​a wood burning fireplace. The hotel even provides a small burlap bag filled with wood. Nice touch, but the room first smelled like the morning after a night around a fire pit. Later on, that smell turned to stale cigarette smoke…
Definitely appreciated the quiet and comfortable room (minus the smell), so I’m bumping up a star.

On a quick, one-​night staycation, the wife and I chose to hit the Half Moon Bay area, and the HMBL was in the top of our Unilocal search… for our price point. (December room rates at the nearby Ritz were a minimum of $ 550…seriously?).
Per the earlier reviews, we reserved a second floor room (less noise) and we grabbed a room with a fireplace. Total rate was $ 189.
At this point, I’ll devolve into a pros vs. cons list (because maybe I do too many powerpoint presentations at work?)
Pros
– The mini (artificial) Christmas tree in the room was a nice touch
– The alternative ‘fire bag’ concept was very cool (instead of a fire log)
– The continental breakfast was excellent (including waffles, oatmeal, cereal, yogurt parfait)
– The room was pretty spacious
Cons
– It was more motel-​like than I envisioned
– The main entrance from Rte 1 was confusing, leading us to nearby condos on the first attempt
– The room was freezing (50 F) when we arrived; did they not know were coming? And the room took forever to heat up… and then at about 1 am it was too hot.
– The bed was a little soft for me
For the price we paid, the HMBL was a 3.5 star experience. I would stay here again, mainly due to the location. When we checked out, I asked the front desk clerk about their cool fire bags, and where they purchased them. (I wouldn’t mind getting a couple for home.) She took my number and promised to call back. I never heard from her, but they did eventually email me the info. So I’ll be rounding up for customer service.
