Raul Castillo Martial Arts

I stared my BJJ training at Raul’s while living in Half Moon Bay for 6 months. Though I was originally hesitant to start, I was so happy I did, as I couldn’t have gotten started at a better place.
Raul is not only a world class instructor and competitor, he cares about his students growth in the sport and more generally as people. From an instructional standpoint he is rock solid. He attention to detail and precision is unparalleled, which really helped me during the beginning stages. Beyond technique, his classes are killer from a fitness perspective as the «warm-​ups» can really push you to your brink (however, all people go at their own pace), and the sparing can be unrelenting in the best of ways. The other students there are all awesome — the white belts super interested in learning, and many of the higher belts are very very good!
Highly recommend training at RCMA!

We love Raul’s dojo and our 2 boys have been working with the resident double black belt — Charlene Coats — for over 3 years.
Every coach in the place is amazing with the children and really take time to give them personal attention, guidance and encouragement.
The jujitsu is excellent and has many kids but our boys are really love the karate group.
I have only good things to say about this dojo and could not be happier. If you are looking for a martial arts school give this one a look, I bet you will be impressed and pleased.

I moved to the Bay Area 3 years ago, and I can honestly say that this is a truly amazing place to train Mixed Martial Arts. This group of instructors are not only amazing fighters, but they also have a gift for breaking down concepts into basic steps that anyone can learn. Stop in and try this place out. I’ve been training at Raul Castillo Martial Arts now for over two years now. Not only do I train, so does my 9 year old daughter and most recently my wife. The family environment at RCMA is absolutely amazing! It’s like nothing else you can get in the Bay Area. Raul and the other trainers will help you achieve whatever goal you set. Whether its weight loss, health, and of course martial arts. I personally have lost 50lbs in 5 months while training at RCMA. I train in the Adult Jiu Jitsu class, my daughter trains in the Kids Jiu Jitsu, and my wife trains in the Adult Jiu Jitsu class plus the Women’s grappling. One class at RCMA will change your life. I feel so fortunate to have found Raul Castillo Martial Arts. My life has been forever impacted in such a positive way. I started Cardio kick boxing in 2007 to help shed my pregnancy baby weight. The class was intense but exactly what I needed. I was able to lose 40 pounds in about nine months. Raul helped educate me on nutrition and healthy alternatives to my eating habits. Having been a competitive athlete as a teen, I craved something that would challenge me even more so than kick boxing. I decided to try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because I was curious about the martial art and wanted to do all of the cool moves I saw Raul and his team doing. I had so much support from Charlene Coats who is now a Brown Belt World Champion in BJJ. Most nights she and I were the only girls on the mats, but she made time for me, making sure I understood the techniques and helping me do them properly. Charlene has been such a strong role model for me as a female athlete. Five years later, I am still training BJJ (three years in BJJ) and couldn’t imagine life without being a part of Raul Castillo Martial Arts. I’m proud to say that all three of my children are currently training BJJ ages 7,5, and more recently I’ve started my 2 ½ year old son. Raul and his instructors have a gift when it comes to children. Raul has a way of knowing exactly what to say and when to say it. He teaches with the perfect mix of patience and compassion while maintaining a strong authoritative influence. I really can’t say enough great things about Raul and his team. It truly is a family atmosphere where you can feel safe leaving your child. I trust my children with them and I am a very protective mother. I am so thankful to Raul and Charlene (and all instructors) for helping me believe in myself and for providing such a wonderful place for my children to grow not just in martial arts but most importantly, in life.

My boys, ages 6 and 8, have had the privilege of training at Raul Castillo Martial Arts for the past year and a half. During this time, I’ve seen them grow in their confidence, skills and knowledge of the martial arts. The instructors at RCMA are incredible role models for my boys, teaching them not only physical skills, but life lessons as well. The emphasis the school puts on respect and self-​discipline while maintaining a warm, family centered atmosphere is, I think, quite unique. As a mother, having confidence in the people that teach your children is paramount. I would encourage anyone with children who are interested in martial arts to train with Raul and his team. Not only do my boys train, I also train in the women’s Jiu Jitsu class and LOVE it. It is the best thing that I’ve done for myself in terms of fitness and learning in a long time.
