There is really and truly no better dentist than Dr. Gross. An old coworker of mine recommended him when I got new insurance in 2006 and I have never looked back. I’ve been there for the expansion into the storefront next door, the addition of a new dentist and many new hygienists, and I still feel like he is the same Dr. Gross as he was 10 years ago.
I hate my teeth. I hate people looking at them, touching them, poking at them, cleaning them, etc. I have a tiny mouth (shockingly) and am super sensitive, so I NEVER enjoyed going to the dentist. Not here — I would honestly come here every day for a cleaning if I could afford it or had the time. First and foremost, they distract you. They have televisions hooked up to each chair so you can watch tv and forget where you are as much as possible. Second, the hygienists actually do NOT want to hurt you! They continually check in to see how you’re doing, if you’re in pain, if you need a break. They only ask you questions when you can give a yes or no answer or when you can actually respond, and they seem to remember from visit to visit what you talked about.
Lately they’ve upgraded some of their equipment and now use what I refer to as power washers to clean your teeth and gums. It’s WAY less painful than the sharp pick, although the baking soda taste is not the most desirable — but I’d rather have baking soda breath than tears of pain. Last time, my power washer was flavored and tasted like a creamsicle. Amazing.
Dr. Gross comes to check in on you when he’s in the office and it’s like greeting an old friend. He may not have seen you for a year (if you came in when the other dentist was on) but he remembers what you’re up to and what you talked about last time. It’s amazing to have someone so personable and so caring directing your health.
I’ve recommended Dr. Gross to a number of my friends and will continue to do so as long as he is in business. Even when I’ve moved further away, I still make the trek every 6 months down to Hamden.

Really great dentist, and (maybe more importantly), really great office staff. They are all fun and lively when it comes to interpersonal interactions, and all serious and professional when it comes to their work. Our whole family are patients here, and we’ve always had great experiences.
Dr. Gross is also the best dental anesthetist I have encountered. Everything has been, as much as possible at a dentist’s office, pleasant and pain-​free. I’ve had great single-​tooth anesthesia, which is fabulous: you have no pain during the procedure, but don’t have to walk out of the office drooling and biting your lip.

I get very anxious about going to the dentist and even more so when I have to find a new dentist after I move to a new area (4 moves in the last 10 years). I’ve had some bad experiences with dentists (one tried to scam me and fill 10 non-​existent cavities, one did some work poorly necessitating a root canal, and another put a metal filling in a very obvious place without discussing it with me). So, when I moved to New Haven I took my sweet time finding a new dentist. I waited a bit too long and was significantly overdue for a cleaning. Some careful research led me to Dr. Gross. The front desk staff was lovely when I made my appointment and when they checked me in. My hygienist was kind, personable, patient, gentle with the sharp, pointy instruments and interested in getting to know me as much as a dental cleaning will permit. Dr. Gross was also friendly and not at all interested in doing extra work on my teeth that doesn’t need to be done right now. Not once was I chastised for skipping a few cleanings — the repeated message was, «We’re just glad you’re here now.» My hygienist was able to make my next appointment from her workstation, so I know that I will have the same hygienist and I also find that comforting.
One of the best parts was that as I walked out, I asked the front desk how much I owed. They responded that they would bill my insurance first and ask me for any remaining balance after. I am accustomed to having to pay in full and file for reimbursement on my own, so that was a nice surprise.

I’ve always hated going to the dentist, as was abundantly clear when I finally started using my dental benefits after paying for them for over a decade or more.
Dr. Gross and his entire staff have been supportive, extremely competent and (almost, because after all this is a dentist) enjoyable.
Dr. Gross has always fully explained what he’s doing and why he’s doing it. The staff has assisted with getting all my claims processed (not nce was i required to get involved) and with my portion, has allowed an accommodating payment schedule.
I walk in and I feel like Norm from Cheers!
His staff seem to enjoy their work and each other. The facility is sparkling clean and very state of the art.
They even bought girl scout cookies from me when I was peddling them for a niece.

Personable dentist. Took time to explain the procedure to me, waited patiently for numbing meds to kick in. I saw him when I first came in as a patient, and then if I needed any surgery. Hygienists are generally cheerful, although I did have an older woman who was quite negative. State-​of-​the-​art equipment from X-​rays to TVs as you have your teeth cleaned. Will return. They try to accommodate you for appointments, especially for acute cases.
