I’m super disappointed with their customer service. They won’t hold any items unless it’s within a certain price bracket which doesn’t make a lot of sense if someone isn’t going to buy they won’t, yea it’s a gamble but that’s business. I explained to the lady who answered my situation but there were no exceptions with her. For a small business that relies on its repeat business and its neighboring clients I think they need to be more lenient on their policy.

This place is awesome. I have made several purchases here since finding this place. Excellent prices and a variety of things. The best part is it is so organized. Most resell shops just throw everything in there for you to dig through. Here they have everything grouped together. It’s great for my OCD. LOL. I have become a regular here and love it. Highly recommend.

This store was exactly what I was looking for. Full of junk that you can pick through and fair prices! My mom bought an antique window for $ 10 along with two antique suitcases. Great little place, I will be coming back.

I love this place. So much vintage goodness. Reasonably priced. It’s huge and the staff is friendly and don’t hover.

Overpriced for what it is. A lot of fun if you’re in the mood to dig through lots of junk. Hopefully you will find the treasure you have always wanted. I didn’t.

I’m taking one star off because I go here all the time and I’ve noticed that the prices are becoming like that of an antique joint and it’s NOT an antique joint. It’s a SALVAGE shop. Big difference. I’ll pay higher prices if the picking-​over and searching and digging are done FOR me.

I’ve started collecting several things (old recipe books, vintage trays, photos of strangers, etc) I’d otherwise had no other interest in, solely because of this store. The prices on the furniture are often pretty unbelievably reasonable, and you can find some pretty great things.
I really like the family who runs it; they always seem like they’re having a good time and they’re never not friendly. Their good mood is infectious, especially while surrounded with a bunch of cool stuff. It’s just a fun place to be.
I can really only go on Saturdays, because I think they changed their hours, and close at 6:00 now, so I don’t get there as often as I would otherwise. Bummer.

Out of all the resale stores in NW Indiana, this one is the best!
I’ve been living in Hammond for 8 years now, and I’ve been visiting here on a regular basis for the entire time. I don’t know where the guys (and girls) who work here get all the stuff in the store, but they always manage to have a fresh supply of items when I walk in. Rarely do I make a trip here that I walk away empty handed. There is literally something for everyone here.
As soon as you walk into the main room, you are surrounded by great furniture at low prices and occasionally some really cool larger items, like a 4 foot square stained glass window for a bakery. The front entrance of the store was recently re-​done, so when you walk in there is a vast supply of old VHS cassettes off to your right along with some newer DVDs, all at very low prices. Farther up is the area with all the display cases and the cash register. The display cases are my favorite part of Hammond Salvage; there are tons of old pocket knives, zippo lighters, antique glasses, keys, doorknobs, and the occasional piece of militaria.
Off to the left is a room, about 10×10, that is FULL of old records, books, and older electronics, as well as a bunch of cassettes and CDs. I’ve never been interested enough to look through all the things in that room, but I’m positive that here are some gems trapped in there waiting for the right buyer.
The doorway at the back of the main room leads to the first of several additions to the building, all of which seem to have been built at a time when Hammond had very questionable building code enforcement policies. From the outside, these additions look haphazard and dangerous, but once you’re inside they don’t look so bad. The first back room is partially filled with housewares, partially with tools, and finished off with fabrics and blankets neatly stacked on shelves. The tool section is really neat, there are tons of vintage tools, saws, and toolboxes stacked up that have always caught my attention.
The rooms beyond this part of the building are not heated, so brace yourself and close the door after yourself when you continue forth. There are four rooms beyond this door: the first contains hockey and golf equipment, a few clothes, and luggage. The second room is mainly lamps and other small furniture. The two beyond that are filled with larger furniture, bed frames, and a lot of mattresses.
Hammond Salvage also has a courtyard area next to the building, which has several lawnmowers, but also so much other neat stuff that I could write a separate review just for that area.
The bottom line is that this place has some of the best prices on resale items I’ve seen, and if something seems too high, they are always willing to negotiate a bit. The staff is very friendly, and there is always something new and interesting to find in the store. I definitely recommend this place.

This is what Lost Eras (in Rogers Park, and I eventually need to redo my review of that place) would probably be like, if it had 2.5 times more space, plus an outdoor area (just off of a left side door past all the TVs) to sell even more stuff (though the most interesting stuff by far is inside). This store was seriously like combining the most interesting retro things you’d find in someone’s basement (more like the most interesting items of all the basements you’ve visited), and displaying them all in a very huge space. All the previous reviews are right-​on about this place being great.
Looks deceptively small when you first enter, as you only see the main room, a 2^nd room just behind that room, and a side room filled with LPs/​music/​books/​etc. at first. But when you go to that second room and realize there are several more rooms behind that door (albeit these rooms aren’t air conditioned or heated at all, unlike the main 3 rooms), then you realize how much hidden treasures are here. And this is the ONLY caution I’ll give about this place: the bathroom (in the back half of the place that doesn’t have a/​c or heat) isn’t in the greatest shape, so I’d suggest finding one somewhere else if possible, unless you have to go very badly.
I believe the staff lets you haggle on prices at least somewhat (but not sure to how much of a degree they allow this), since I overheard someone at the register and a customer appearing to do that before I began exploring the back rooms. Glad I didn’t rush my time here, and savored exploring this store. Can’t wait to return to this store at some future point.

HOLY CRAP.
I am an avid thrifter and lover of junk, junque, and the like. I will probably die in some Grey Gardens-​esque manse one day. It will be quite the tragi-​comedy.
There were many amazing things to be found here from a beautiful chair I couldn’t take home, to a claw foot tub out back, to a bunch of crazy dollies I took photos of. I was in antique junk heaven. If I weren’t a bit on the broke side, I would have plopped down $ 12 for a ceramic Grimace bank. I probably should have, but another time. I did come home with a London Fog trench and two beautiful vintage hats. $ 7. My roomie found a He-​Man book and some other wins as well. I think a couple hours on our road trip journey came in here and died along with all the stuff.
I need to come back here again and again.

If you can’t find a treasure that you cannot live without, you are not even looking! They have everything from frames to stoves, & china to a box of original borax. Great finds and great prices!

This place rocks! Pretty much anything you could be searching for, there’s a good chance they have it there. The people that work there are beyond courteous and helpful. I highly recommend checking it out.

I am obsessed with Hammond Salvage and Resale. Just a few blocks from the house I grew up in, it is currently the only place in Hammond I actually WANT to go to. It’s certainly one of the only places there I look forward to visiting.
Basically, it’s just room after room after room of junk and antiques of all types, from stuff for which you’d never pay money to stuff for which you can’t pull the money out of your pockets quickly enough. The rooms wind on forever and are chock full of furniture, art, fabric, ephemera, jewelry, books, appliances, records, videos, clothes, lamps. The list could go on forever. And so could your hunt. As the name implies, this is a salvage shop, and if you’re not prepared to take the time to get your hands dirty and dig through a lot of stuff, don’t bother coming here. This is not a sterile Goodwill store with marked aisles. Some of the rooms are packed to the point you can barely move, but I’ve found more than a few worthwhile items by patiently working my way through the mounds of stuff.
Granted, the bulk of the stuff you’ll find here is not even close to being in perfect condition, partially because there’s so much they wind up packing it into a room so tightly it gets scratched or chipped. (And paritally because it’s just old stuff.) But that makes it a crafter’s dream. If you’re into refurbishing furniture or random objects or into turning everyday objects into art, you’ll definitely find something here to inspire you. And, for the most part, the prices will be better than you’ll find at most thrift stores in Chicago. Also unlike most thrift stores in Chicago, it is possible to haggle with the owner if you think something is overpriced.
Creative gardeners are likely to find – particularly in the outdoor area to the side of the building (aka the side that doesn’t face the street) – random appliances, wheels, industrial parts that could be turned into planters in an innovative way.
I’m guessing they get a lot of their stuff from estate sales, which means there are definitely truly unique vintage objects always arriving. The first room you enter usually houses smaller items that are in better condition than most. It also houses the newer, better-​condition furniture, art and ephemera.
Speaking of ephemera, this place is always chock-​full of stunning old magazines, programs, and photos/​photo albums of people and places from the 1940s and up. Great for collages, etc.
Their selection of clothes, shoes and purses is very small, but the stuff they have is usually very vintage, which would make it a good place to look for theater costumes and the like. I’ve also seen some really awesome vintage fabrics, tablecloths, etc. there.
As for pricing, it does sometimes seem haphazard and unrealistic. I’ve seen items there that are way overpriced (e.g. scratched up record albums with warped sleeves for $ 3-​$ 5) and items there that were so cheap I couldn’t believe it (a vintage ‘40s-‘60s Royal Haeger bowl for $ 6). But, as I mentioned before, the woman who runs the place is very friendly and usually open for bargaining, so make your best offer and see what happens.
Over the years, I’ve purchased some seriously great random things there super cheap, including but not limited to the aforementioned Haeger bowl, a couple of rare Majolica pieces, some gorgeous vintage costume jewelry and a ton of vintage ‘50s-‘60s back issues of Life magazine in great condition.
Do-​it-​Yourselfers and people who just love antique hunting: It can be hit or miss, as are most resale shops and thrift stores, but even on my more «miss» days, it’s totally worth the trip from the city.
