Omg they have the best soup ever !!! I know that sounds weird a pizza place and I order soup. But seriously their soup is amazing. The ham and bean soup is just like my moms maybe even better shhhh. Their pizza is also good as well as their subs. They are always so friendly. It’s like eating with your family

Sal’s has been serving pizza and subs in Hanover for what seems like forever. It used to be just Jerry & Sal’s but, many years ago, Jerry decided to run his own restaurant on the north end of town at the North Hanover Mall(still operating today) and Sal moved to this location on the south side. For Hanover and even this part of South Central PA, Sal’s New York style pizza is actually pretty good and unquestionably one of the better non-chain options folks have in the area. The dough, cheese and sauce lend themselves to a distinctive taste that could perhaps be compared to that of Sbarro. As testament to this pizza’s wide appeal, every Hanover employer for whom I have worked since 2001 that has held any kind of office party where pizza is served, has almost always called either Sal’s or Jerry’s. Their cheesesteaks are always quite generous meat-wise and the rolls have always been nothing but fresh. Their salads are quite good, as well. In terms of ambiance and décor, let’s face it, Sal’s is just your ordinary pizza and sub shop and it isn’t going to win many awards. The place gets a lot of take-out traffic where orders can be picked up at either the inside order/pick-up counter or drive-thru window. The dining room is neither cramped nor particularly spacious and it always seems like everyone is on top of everybody else with the off layout of tables and booths which lends itself to easily overhearing the conversation of others. However, this doesn’t seem to deter large groups(i.e., families, folks gathering after football/basketball games, etc.) from utilizing the dining room. That being said, those same tables and booths have certainly seen better days and could probably use a bit of a refresh, in order to enhance diner comfort. If I have but one bone to pick with Sal’s, it’s the following. Yes, Sal’s always seems to do a respectable job of keeping the place clean. The dining room is usually tidy, tables are cleared/wiped and, on those occasions when I have stopped by towards closing time, somebody has always seemed to be mopping the dining room floor quite thoroughly. However, employee hygiene seems to be another matter altogether. Two Fridays ago while I was sitting at the front counter awaiting my take-out order like I always do, I had the great misfortune of observing the older, Caucasian, goateed employee, who was assisting with the pizza ovens that night, picking food from his teeth. Needless to say, that turned my stomach a bit, especially when I saw him using that same hand and fingers to reach into the oven so as to rotate the(my) pizzas for even baking. Gross. At that point, my only comfort was knowing that the oven’s high temperature would likely kill any germs he had just managed to transfer to the crust. Now fast forward to this evening(12÷12÷15). I decided to give Sal’s a chance for redemption. But, much to my dismay, who should I see wrist deep in pizza dough and toppings as soon as I walk in the front door? That’s right, ye ‘olé«tooth picker.» Ugh. As best I could tell, he seemed to have been filling in at that time for the younger, Hispanic pizza-maker who was just coming back from a break and fiddling on his cell phone in the doorway next to the pizza-making workstation. «Whew, I’m safe,» I thought. But then I noticed that same younger, Hispanic pizza-maker slipping his phone right into his pants pocket before jumping right back into handling the dough… without washing his hands! Yuck! Doesn’t he know that numerous studies have shown that cell phones hold more germs than a even a public restroom toilet seat!!! What else are these folks doing that I haven’t witnessed yet? Needless to say, I skipped the pizza altogether tonight. Now, let’s be clear here, I’m no germaphobe but restaurant employee hygiene certainly goes a long way with me, as it should for others. Both of these incidents I witnessed are especially alarming, considering that we are now in the midst of flu season and how easy it is to spread some other food-borne illnesses through unsanitary conditions. Furthermore, isn’t it a PA Department of Health code that these two guys also wear hats or some other sort of hair restraint when preparing food? I certainly enjoy my current good health and, the last time I checked, germs from somebody’s filthy mouth, cell phone and/or hands, let alone hair, were not considered extra«toppings.» Buyer beware. Sal’s, I sure want to love you all the way around but you’ve got a bit of work to do and I’m(reluctantly) taking my business elsewhere for awhile. My three stars is for the food quality/taste alone.

My son and I decided to eat lunch here and what a mistake that was. I ordered Lasagna and my son ordered a Chicken Parmesan Sandwich. My lasagna was just taken from the freezer and microwaved. Then just served to me in the same plastic container swimming in soupy water. My sons Chicken sandwich tasted old and was obviously also cooked by Chef Mike(microwave). Our fried mushrooms were served to us almost black! Not sure when the grease was last changed? Worst meal I have had in 53 years hands down! McDonald’s would have been a much better choice!

Worst delivery service EVER. I waited over an hour the first time I ordered from here. When my pizza finally arrived, it was cold. I called to complain and they told me they would bring me another pizza. Another hour went by. Another cold pizza. Never again. No business is this busy that it should take them over an hour to deliver your food, especially when you live within less than a mile of the establishment. The only reason I didn’t just go pick it up myself is because I promised my kids we would have a pizza delivered.

Sal’s is sooo good. Perfect crust and sauce to cheese ratio. I live in Michigan now but I go back to Hanover to visit family once in a while. We can’t get new york style pizza in the mid west… can you believe this chicago style nonsense?! Sals satisfies my craving for real good pizza! For some reason, the hanover mall location is pretty bad.

Check your food prior to leaving if doing a pick-up order – chicken strips were way overdone. Associate taking the order over the phone unknowledgeable about product they carry. Prices very high compared to comparable area locations.

Let me start by telling you, I am from New York(read: I know good pizza). This place has AWESOME pizza. The restaurant is comfortable, clean, and inviting. You can relax while they make up your divine dish and within a short span you will be feasting on giant slices of goodness! Not too much sauce, perfect crust, not overcooked, and the cheese-oh my gosh-the cheese-YUM! Will be coming back again very soon!

Great pizza! This is Sal’s restaurant. Jerry runs the one on the north end of town in the mall(Yes — really — Jerry & Sal’s LOL) Regardless, friendly service, great pizza, and quick, but made-to-order food will make a great lunch or dinner!
