Victory Farms is one of the best farms to visit at the South of the James farmers market. Their selection is huge, and diverse– they do everything from lettuce to broccoli rabe to tomatoes and chinese eggplant and fresh carrots… And all their produce is gorgeous. They don’t put out bad quality stuff, and it all tastes so much better than what you can buy in the grocery store. My favorite thing to buy is actually basil, which they offer in a huge bunch for $ 2. I also really like their swiss chard, and they offer several colors of beets, which are always interesting. Their beets look smaller than some of the others, but the different colors make them worth it. In my experience, the people who staff the stand are also super nice– they’ve given me tips on how to cook the new vegetables I buy to try at home, and they are very patient as I oogle their produce each Saturday morning. You can find Victory Farms produce at Ellwood Thompson’s, Belmont Butchery, Olio(formerly European Market), Savor, The Dining Room at the Berkeley Hotel, and Balliceaux… so they’re a pretty well-known local farm! But the best part about them is that they are a co-op! So if you can, get on their waiting list and one day you will be offered the chance to be a member! Co-op members get first pick of the vegetables when they are ready, and usually there is about a week’s lag between what is available to members and what is available to the public. Part of my probably loves it because it’s exclusive, but I have been trying to become a member for years! That must he a helluva long waiting list…
